Grit and Perseverance … and privilege
The Power of ‘...not yet’https://www.ted.com/talks/carol_dweck_the_power_of_believing_that_you_can_improve
● Carol Dweck - Growth Mindset● Passion and perseverance for long term goals● EFFORT - not talent - the neurons make stronger connections
which makes them smarter. ✔ ‘You must have worked hard at that!’ … ‘not yet’X ‘You must be bright!’ (don’t praise intelligence)● Push them out of their comfort zone - it needs to be a little
more difficult than they can manage!
What should we be doing?
● Not the answers - ask questions, encourage them to email their teachers.
● Feeling overloaded - help them make it into manageable chunks.
● Use the words ‘Yet..’ and ‘Not yet…’● It’s okay to fail - that’s how we learn - you keep trying.● We learn the best from our failures!
The power of parents - routines and connecting
● Ask: What did you enjoy/ not enjoy today at school?● Not: How was your day? This provides a basis to talk about the things that are happening in their lives● Diet and sleep● Develop their own ‘wind-down and sleep routine’● Devices: Have a set time that all devices are shut off and
placed in family public area - out of bedrooms.
The power of parents - learning and homework● Homework - parent’s attitude affects students motivation
● Parents who may interfere too much may take away their child’s
opportunity to learn
● Help them see homework as a way to learn and develop their skills
instead of focusing on the task itself.
● Study plan for the week - time to play, sport etc
● Help - read task together, break down the task into smaller tasks -
chunking; model - show them one example then they do the rest.
Eagle Award● Diligence and consistency● All Glasshouse MS students to achieve this award!● Selfless, thoughtful and kind people - service● Points are also given for
○ ‘Adventure’ and ○ ‘Skill’
● Bronze = 100 points● Silver = 200● Gold = 300+

Transitioning to Year 7The challenge of lockers...
Keep practising - you’ll get the hang of it soon!
Transitioning to Year 7Transition from Year 6 to Year 7 = Growing Independence
● When in primary school, reading to children every day improves their
reading and learning.
● As kids get older, parents who discuss movies, books and current affairs
have teenagers who perform better in reading.
“...parents who engage their kids in conversations about things larger than
themselves were essentially teaching their kids to become thinking adults.” (“The Smartest Kids in the World - and how they got that way” Amanda Ripley 2013)
Transitioning to Year 7Transition from Year 6 to Year 7 = Growing Independence

Transitioning to Year 7➢ Using IT:
○ Laptops to be taken home does not mean using them 24/7
○ Set boundaries; set times for homework.
○ Manage laptops AND phones at home - NOT in bedrooms
overnight.
○ Homework is the priority; they are school devices
Cyber Safety Solutions - Susan McLeanSusan McLean is Australia's foremost expert in the area of cyber safety and young people. She was a member of Victoria Police for 27 years and in 1994 took her first report of cyberbullying involving a group of Year 8 school girls.
