MCI HIGHLIGHTS

Ramadan Greetings!

We would like to wish everyone observing Ramadan a joyous celebration. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. There is also a verse in the Quran that prescribes fasting for all Muslims who are mature and healthy enough to fast for the full day. Muslims fast as an act of worship, a chance to get closer to God and a way to become more compassionate to those in need. Eid el-Fitur (Feast of the Breaking the Fast) is the holiday that marks the breaking of the fast for Muslims at the end of Ramadan. The celebration lasts three days during which families and friends get together to celebrate with good food and give to charity. During Ramadan, people of the Muslim faith wake up well before dawn to eat the first meal of the day, which lasts until sunset. This means eating lots of high-protein foods and drinking as much water as possible right up until dawn, after which you can't eat or drink anything until sunset.

Online Learning is up and running!

Last week we had some wonderful examples of what our students are creating in the new world of online learning and this week is no different! This week we have some work from our Senior Students from our Technological Studies Department who are working on Infection Control posters for Hair Salons and Spas. Here are some examples from Ms. Falzarano:

From our Special Education Department

We are approaching the end of week 4 of online learning and MCI’s Special Education Department would like to let all our families know that we are committed to providing relevant and appropriate educational opportunities and supports during these unprecedented times to our students. Google Classrooms have been set up for all Learning Strategies courses and Community Classes. We hope that you continue to access your classroom daily for your learning. For more information and support, please contact your Special Education Resource Teacher via YRDSB board email (for example [email protected].) You can find a list of all of our teachers at the bottom of the E-Bulletin!

From our Modern Languages Department

(Although this year’s summer programming is still up in the air, we wanted to take the opportunity to mention the wonderful things the Explore Programme allows, and all the reasons your child may want to take part in the future.) This year, we are proud to have over 20 students who were accepted into the five-week “Explore” Bursary Programme in Quebec during the month of July. They will be able to learn French by being completely immersed in the language, all while experiencing the Francophone culture. These students are mostly grade 11 students, along with a few grade 12s. They will make their way to various cities across Quebec this summer, where they will live on campus at college or university dorms. These students will stay, live, and eat, all free of charge thanks to this Bursary programme! They will practice their various French skills while participating in lessons in the morning, followed by leadership-based activities in the afternoons, along with fun workshops in the evening. They will not only improve their French reading, writing, and communication skills, but they will learn about Quebecois culture and make friends from all over the world! They will also have the opportunity to do tourist excursions such as; white water rafting, whale watching, and treetop trekking, over the weekends or in their free time. This is an opportunity not to be missed! Please visit http://www.myexplore.ca for more information! The yearly deadline is mid-February so make sure to get your applications in on time next year in order join in on the fun!

EquatIO for Math and Science Students

EquatIO is an easy-to-use Chrome extension that allows students to insert mathematical equations, formulas, and symbols for math and science. This digital tool is great for students to input their equations on their Google form, Google Docs, and Google Slides. The EquatIO extension has been automatically deployed to all student YRDSB GAPPS accounts. Students can install EquatIO extension for free onto their G Suite and they can locate the blue diamond icon in the extension area of the browser to start EquatIO.

Once EquatIO is installed, students can type complicated math expressions into clear and editable formulas. The handwriting recognition feature allows students to turn their handwriting into accurate formulas if they write directly on their touchscreen. It also has the speech recognition that turn dictated equations to written expressions. Students can revisit and edit their digital math equations at any time. It is a great digital tool to foster deeper understanding of math and science concepts.
