A Dickens of a PartnershipThe Burton Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Rabbit Run to promote the

Christmas season through its Country Hearth Christmas: A Dickens of a Christmas. The Chamber will sell raffle tickets for a Dickens-themed gift basket valued at $260. It contains a teacup and saucer, two stuffed bears, a Victorian feather fan, a Victorian bust, a silver candle holder, an Oliver Twist DVD, and two season passes to all the Dickens plays which will be presented at Rabbit Run. Local entrepreneurial brother and sister team Kimberley Osborne-Milstein and Brian Osborne launched their new design and manufacturing business, Textile Republic (TR), this past summer. Theirs is an innovative concept in that they offer a wide variety of high quality surface design products. The purchaser is provided with the background of the artist, and interaction between customer and artist via social media is encouraged.

For the fashion forward shopper, Textile Republic is a manufacturer of fully customized products such as belts, picture frames, coasters and monogrammed luggage tags. The Web site is colorful and true to the product. Kimberley says, “We manufacture all items onsite and are looking to expand our line and facility. This affords the quality control that we deem so important. We could ship our patterns overseas for assembly, but then we would lose the ability to create and maintain a high quality product.“

For print designers, the procedure is accessible and lucrative from anywhere in the world. Artists simply create a free account on www.TextileRepublic.com, submit a low-resolution (can not be copied) photo of their pattern for review by the TR team. Upon approval, the pattern is posted in the voting area of the Web site and is voted on by shoppers and other designers via a Facebook “Like” icon. Voters are invited to leave comments about each pattern for aspiring and veteran textile designers across the globe. If a pattern receives at least 100 Facebook “Likes,” it is made available for purchase on the full line of products at www.TextileRepublic.com. If a pattern receives over 400 Facebook “Likes,” the designer’s compensation increases. Designers are encouraged, but not required, to promote themselves and their work via their own platform.

Kimberley says, “I have noticed, with many custom-designed products, that the artist is rarely introduced and promoted for their designs. We wanted to change that by offering them an opportunity to receive realized income and increased exposure. We are creating not only a networking opportunity and forum for artists, but also a strong Textile Republic brand and community. We are genuine and we want our model to evolve into a really cool concept by offering quality custom

Institute of Art graduate, handles graphic design, Web site maintenance as well as reviewing designs for TR. She and Kimberly work closely putting forth a brand that will set Textile Republic apart from all other product design companies.

Kimberley is not new to the world of fashion and design. She has been modeling since her teen years. She began with the David and Lee office in Cleveland before working with the Ford Modeling Agency in Chicago. Her modeling experience includes department store appearances in several catalogs and magazines including Brides, Teen, Modern Bride and Cosmopolitan. She also studied fashion merchandising and design at Ursuline College and has a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts. Modeling took her to Los Angeles where she acted with Rob Lowe and James Coburn.

Several years ago, Kimberley and best friend Cristen Gedeon Loeser, also a graduate of Ursuline, created a successful line of fashionable accessories under the Kimberley Cristen, ltd. label. They designed and manufactured accessories; belts and clutches were among the favorites. While creating accessories, Kimberley found a void in unique prints on fabric. It was her brother who suggested building an online, ongoing graphic design competition where winning designs from all over the world would be incorporated, and to create a line of products displaying these designs. They began building a design collection.

I have written the “Next 10 Reasons to Buy American” however, I received an e-mail from a friend that included an article by David Evens written for the “Likethedew” newspaper and thought it should have precedence due to timing for the Christmas season. The site is www.likethedew.com/2011/11/06/christmas-2011-birth-of-a-new-tradition/. I’m sorry I can’t reprint the entire article, so for those of you who do not have internet access, I will paraphrase it.

Why not support your local economy and give gifts that people can actually use, instead of sending our monies overseas? We all get our hair cut so why not give gift cards to your local barber or beauty shop? Give a gift of gutter cleaning, lawn cutting or spring yard clean up. Everyone has a golfer in the family that would love a couple rounds at the local course. Here is a “hot” idea; how about a cord of wood for someone who enjoys their fireplace or heats with wood?

Your local restaurant has gift certificates or gift cards. This is not about the big national chains but about your local hometown eatery. How about a car detailing, car wash or oil change certificate for the friend who’s car needs some TLC? How about a gym membership for that friend or relative who needs a little encouragement to get in shape? I bet your mother or wife would like the services of a cleaning lady, or your dad may like his driveway sealed or plowed for the winter.

Remember that this is all about helping the local hometown neighbor that may be counting on this Christmas season to pull them through a critical time in their business. So don’t forget the waitress or barber that could use a nice gratuity for Christmas and why not go a little further and tip your favorite cashier, or other service worker; the garbage man, the mail carrier, the vet’s assistant and the girl that cleans the stalls at the place you board your horse. I bet she works their because she loves horses not for the meager pay.

Congratulations to the winners of our Yummiest Pumpkin Recipe Contest. Evelyn Bluhm‘s pumpkin milkshake recipe won first prize, a $25 gift certificate for the End of the Commons General Store in Mesopotamia. Margaret Yoder’s pumpkin cheesecake bars won her second place, a $15 gift certificate to the Fig Tree in Middlefield. In third place, winning a $10 gift certificate to Amish Home Craft and Bakery in Middlefield is Theresa Surgeon for her hot pumpkin soup recipe.

Yummiest Pumpkin Recipe Contest Winners

Sponsor a Family“Sponsor a Family” is the holiday program that provides food and gifts to low income

families and seniors in Geauga County. Last year, 630 families received help. Over 1,322 children received toys and gifts, and between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds of food was donated, sorted, packed, and delivered.

Sponsor a Family matches low income families who need assistance with churches, organizations, companies, families, and individuals who want to help. The goal is to match as many families as possible with sponsors from the community. Those not matched with a designated sponsor receive aid from donations made to Job and Family Services. Sponsor a Family volunteers are an essential part of the programwho sort and pack donations for the families and make deliveries.

Toy collection points are: The Middlefield Banking Company in Middlefield (main branch); Huntington Banks in Middlefield, Chardon and Burton; Geauga Savings Bank in Newbury and Citizens Bank in Bainbridge and Chesterland.

To make donations, volunteer or for information, contact Sara Shininger ,440-285-9141. Monetary donations are accepted to purchase food and items not provided by donations. Checks must be made payable to “Special Services.” Please indicate Sponsor a Family in the memo portion of the check and mail to P.O. Box 309, Chardon, OH 44024. New toys, coats and other donations are accepted at Geauga County Job and Family Services, 12480 Ravenwood Drive, Chardon.

Chardon (440-285-4999) or Wellness One, 11800 E. Washington St. in Chagrin Falls (440-543-2097) to bring smiles to the faces of those in need and help the children of Geauga County have a Merry Christmas. Deadline is Dec. 16.

to send in her entry. And, whoops! We have a correction to make. In

Maurine Weaver’s pumpkin cheesecake with sour cream

topping recipe, we wrote that 4 cups of white sugar

and 3 cups of butter were needed. The actual recipe calls

for ¼ cup of sugar and 1/3 cup of butter. We apologize to Maurine

and to anybody who tried out the incorrect recipe.

Holiday Volunteers NeededThe Geauga County Department on Aging is looking for holiday meal volunteers who

can offer a few hours of their time on Christmas Day, Dec. 25. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals from the Chardon Senior Center. Holiday meal drivers must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid driver’s license and have proof of insurance.

Those who want to volunteer by driving a holiday meal should call the Geauga County Department on Aging at 440-279-2130, 440-834-1856 extension 2130, or 440-564-7131 extension 2130, and register as a volunteer. Once registered, volunteers should plan to be at the Department on Aging, 12555 Ravenwood Drive, by 11 a.m. on Christmas Day.
