ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL TO BE REPLACED Middlesbrough’s All Saints’ Church First World War memorial, commemorating the lives of local men from Gjers Mills ironworks, is to be replaced following the award of an £8,500 Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

The “They answered their Country’s Call” project takes its name from text that appeared on the war memorial which commemorated those who died from the parish before it was stolen and damaged in 2007. This project will explore the impact of the First World War on Middlesbrough, its industries and churches, with the replacement of the war memorial one of the highlights of the year-long scheme. The project will also include a programme of education activities and public events, a First World War Exhibition at the grade II* listed church, digitisation of historic material and repair work to the damaged original war memorial.

ARTIST’S IMPRESSIONS REVEALBEDFORD STREET PLANSThe future vision for Middlesbrough’s growing independent retail heart has been unveiled in a series of artist’s impressions.

The town’s burgeoning Baker Street programme is set to head into stage two by expanding onto Bedford Street, the next road along.

Middlesbrough Council is working to bring the premises back into use as independent retail and leisure businesses with redevelopment already underway and set to be complete later in the year.

OUT OF THE ORDINARYScarlet Moon is a hair salon that is anything but ordinary. Based in Middleborough, they offer an extensive and impressive range of salon services.

Established as one of the hottest highlights in the hairdressing calendar, Pro Hair Live Manchester was back again with an amazing line up of some of the industry’s leading names including local hairdressers Dean Bradwell and Foxy aka Scarlet Moon.

The dynamic duo opened their presentation with a MANGA/CARTOON inspired video and live Middlesbrough sourced models brought the stage alive with their precision haircuts. Dean Bradwell presented two models with exacting cuts each enhanced by his signature colour technique, whilst Foxy

HI HO, HI HO…IT’S ON TO ICE WE GO

One of the world’s best-loved fairy tales is being given a sparkling make-over and gliding into the North East later this spring. We strapped on our skates to find out more…

With skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony, Snow White is one of the most iconic characters in modern literature.

Originally developed by the Brothers Grimm, she was given the Disney treatment in 1937 and has since appeared in dozens of adaptations, including the recent blockbuster, Snow White and the Huntsman.

Now, the popular princess and her dashing prince are heading back to the North East in a stunningly choreographed interpretation by the Russian Ice Stars.

The company, led by producer Vee Deplidge, pioneered the concept of theatre on ice by creating full length, ballet-based productions to fit smaller, non-arena stages throughout the world.

Their ability to transport audiences into a magical winter wonderland, while they sat comfortably in their warm theatre seats, led to a personal request from Prince Rainier of Monaco to perform Cinderella at the 50th anniversary of his reign and to subsequently perform for him every year until his death.

“While watching an ice show in 1991, I was struck with the thought that marrying danger and speed with the beauty of ballet could be totally spectacular,” said Vee.

“I had always loved theatre and thought that transferring it onto ice would allow a whole new range of movement, while giving a much broader appeal to the traditional interpretation of popular stories.”

For their latest production, Snow White on Ice, the Russian Ice Stars will take their audience on the most magical journey yet, with a combination of ballet, gymnastics and aerial

acrobatics helping to bring the story to life like never before.

Along with all the familiar elements, including an enchanted mirror and deceptively delicious-looking red apple, this mesmerising show will also feature a few surprises, including a special appearance by television personality, Rustie Lee.

“What makes Snow White on Ice so different though, is the quality of the skaters” said Vee.

“The Russian Ice Stars include more former World, European and Olympic competitors than any other theatrical ice show and the end result is truly magnificent.”

RABY CASTLE One of the best-preserved castles in the North East, Lord Barnard’s home offers a glimpse into life through the ages, with more than 600 years of history stored within its walls.

HOP BACKIN HISTORY Many of the North East’s major historical attractions are just a hop,skip and a jump away this Easter half term. We took a break from gorging on Easter eggs and hot cross bunsto see what a trip back in time has to offer for the whole family…

RICHMOND CASTLE With breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales, Richmond Castle is one of the finest tourist attractions in North Yorkshire, as well as one the greatest Norman fortresses in Britain.

Originally built to subdue the unruly north of England, this 800-year-old site now boasts an interactive exhibition and secluded Cockpit Garden, perfect for quiet walks and picnics.

Extended opening hours will be operating from March 29, with an Easter Adventure Quest taking place between 11am and 5pm from Friday April 3 to Monday April 6. Entry is priced at £5 per adult and £3 for children aged five to 15.

KIPLIN HALL Looking around Kiplin Hall, near Scorton, it’s easy to imagine that the owners have just stepped out for a moment.

Almost everything in this Jacobean manor, including furniture, paintings and personal memorabilia, belonged to the families that owned the property between 1620 and 1971. It is displayed in much the same way as it would have been when the family of Admiral Walter Carpenter was in residence at the end of the 19th century. Most of the rooms in the house, originally built by George Calvert, Secretary of State to James I and founder of Maryland, USA, are now open to the public, with handy information sheets available as you walk through the Hall. The extensive grounds, which are currently undergoing major restoration, also offer the opportunity to enjoy leisurely strolls around the lake, through woodland and across the parkland, as well as a Walled Garden, formal gardens and a small museum of the garden’s history.

The Gardens and Tea Room are open Sunday to Wednesday until October 28, as well as on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. The Hall itself will also open on Good Friday and Easter Saturday and then Sunday to Wednesday from April 5.

A special event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland will also be held from Good Friday to Easter Monday with fun activities for children in the gardens from 10am until 5pm and the Hall from 2pm until 5pm.

Admission is charged at £5.30 per adult and £2.30 for children aged five to 15 for access to the gardens only, and £8.30 and £4.30 respectively for access to both the Hall and gardens.

BOWES MUSEUM This magnificent French chateau, created in the late 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes, houses internationally renowned collections of decorative and fine arts spanning five centuries.

Its permanent collections include works by artists such as Canaletto, El Greco, Courbet and Turner, as well as the most extensive collections of ceramic in Britain.

This Spring, the Bowes Museum’s temporary exhibitions will include a tribute to the elegance of feathers in the fashion industry, which closes on April 19, and a never before exhibited body of work featuring former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as imagined by the renowned satirical cartoonist and illustrator, Gerald Scarfe.

Younger visitors will appreciate the museum’s array of games and activities, such as dressing up areas and fun worksheets, as well as the wide range of interactive sessions which run throughout the year.

This includes Eggscellent Easter Crafts on April 1 and 2, a Family Fun Day on April 6 and a chance to go behind the scenes with the museum’s conservators on April 7 and 8.

THE MUSEUM OF HARTLEPOOL AND HARTLEPOOL MARITIME EXPERIENCE Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience, (formerly known as Hartlepool Historic Quay) brings to life the time of Nelson, Napoleon and the Battle of Trafalgar in a superb re-creation of an 18th century seaport.

Home to the HMS Trincomalee, Britain’s oldest warship still afloat, this themed-attraction offers the opportunity to experience life aboard a real naval frigate, explore the historic quayside, including period shops and houses and chat to experienced tour guides, all wearing authentic period costumes.

Entry to Hartlepool Maritime Experience and HMS Trincomalee incurs a small admission charge, however entry to the adjoining Museum of Hartlepool is free for all ages.

Here visitors are transported through 5000 years of history from the Bronze Age, to the joining of the Headland and West Hartlepool in 1967, the modern day and the possibilities beyond.

It is also home to PSS Wingfield Castle, a wonderfully restored 1930s paddle steamer.

The Museum of Hartlepool will be hosting a Pirate Exhibition from March 28 to June 28, with additional arts and craft activities on the opening day. There will also be an Easter trail along the Maritime Experience’s quayside during Easter weekend.

DURHAM CATHEDRAL Standing proudly over the medieval city of Durham, this World Heritage site is the shrine of St Cuthbert, seat of the Bishop of Durham and instantly recognisable as one of the great buildings of Europe.

It would be easy to escape for hours here, taking a guided tour, climbing the Cathedral Tower and dining in the Undercroft Restaurant, but one of our favourite things to do at the moment is helping to recreate the Cathedral in Lego.

Once completed, this unique model will incorporate 350,000 bricks and stretch more than 3m wide and 1m high. Visitors can add their own brick in exchange for a £1 donation, with all proceeds being used to help transform public access to some of the Cathedral’s most spectacular spaces and the collections it has acquired over the centuries.

Durham Cathedral is open until 6pm Monday to Saturday and 5.30pm on Sunday and entry is free.

A number of special activities will also be taking place during the Easter holidays. This includes a free Egg Hunt between 10.30am and 3.30pm on April 7 and 8. Monk Egfrith will also be telling the Easter Story on both dates, with Easter craft activities on April 9. Both of these events incur a £2.50 admission charge per child.

TRANSPORTER GONDOLARE-OPENSThe iconic Transporter Bridge is back in operation following the completion of the latest phase of the biggest overhaul in its 103-year history.

The re-opening follows the completion of renovation works to the Bridge’s gondola as part of the £2.6m Heritage Lottery Fund - supported by Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project.

The renovated gondola has been enhanced and now features newly installed glass sidings offering stunning views up and down the River Tees in keeping with the design of the original Bridge.

The Transporter will operate withnew opening hours.

NEW TEES TRANSPORTER STAMP PROVES POPULAR ON FIRST DAY The limited edition Tees Transporter Bridge Royal Mail stamp issued on Thursday 5th March has proven to be a huge hit on its first day on sale.

The Transporter stamp has attracted attention from around the world, with the launch covered by several national broadcasters and newspapers. The limited edition stamp’s release has also proven popular online, with thousands visiting the Tees Transporter Bridge’s official@teestransporter Twitter account and Facebook pages. Hundreds have retweeted and shared the news of the stamp’s release, including celebrated Middlesbrough artist Mackenzie Thorpe, author Harry Pearson and ‘Voice of the Boro’ Ali Brownlee.

With Teessiders rushing to snap up the limited edition stamps, some Post Offices in the area have already sold out and are looking to order more stock. The Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre is also awaiting delivery of the sought-after collectors’ items. The new stamp has also attracted new visitors to the iconic landmark, currently undergoing extensive renovation as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project. Among the visitors was John Cook from Shipley near Bradford, who travelled to the Transporter Bridge especially to mark the occasion of the launch.

The Tees Transporter Bridge’s Tosh Warwick said “The popularity of the stamp has already led to a heightened interest in the Bridge, reflecting the passion and pride felt towards our landmark structure. We look forward to receiving the Transporter stamps and expect these will prove very popular with visitors purchasing postcards and merchandise from the Transporter Bridge Shop”.

With the average age of a house buyer now around 36 and two thirds of buyers relying on the bank of mum and dad, Charlotte has been able to take advantage of Bellway’s Stepping Stones scheme to buy her new two bedroom home.

School holidays can strike fear into most parents. The long summer holidays in particular can be quite daunting for working parents trying to juggle childcare arrangements with grandparents, annual leave and days spent at friend’s houses. We understand the predicament which many parents face, therefore at Red House School we keep our doors open and provide a stimulating and exciting Holiday Club to children that attend the Nursery & Infant School.

Our Holiday Club offers a diverse and ever-changing range of activities, from art and craft projects, baking, outdoor games, gardening, role play and local visits. Parents are happy in the knowledge that their child is in an environment that is familiar, with a variety of fun activities taking place every day.

Due to the success of the Holiday Club we have recently extended the number of days which we are open, resulting in the Nursery & Infant School being open for 50 weeks of the year.

TRUNK TALES SET TO ENCHANT TOWN HALL AUDIENCE There’s a feast of family fun in store when Tell Tale Hearts Children’s Touring Theatre Company bring Trunk Tales to Middlesbrough Town Hall in late April.

Trunk Tales is an interactive storytelling show designed to unleash the imagination of children aged four and over – and those of their adults too!

A Trunk is a box for belongings, belongings that have travelled far and wide…especially when it belongs to this particular lady with each object having a tale to tell.

The audience will be transported on a round the world journey as well-travelled friend regales them with tales from Egypt and India and local stories of friendship, kindness and bravery.

Join her to share in tales of boastful toads, magical fish and fearsome beasts of the wild woods.

Using puppetry and the contents of her magical trunk she will create Arabic seas, epic mountains, fields of turnips and the tallest trees.

Children are invited into the performance through interaction, creating waves, playing with animal sounds, helping to find a suitor for the mouse bride and even acting out a character or two from the stories.

Trunk Tales is suitable for children aged four and over and their families and takes place at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Saturday, April 25 from 2pm.
