  • • Physical fitness. User must be physically suited and trained by a competent person prior to the first use. People with disabili-ties may only use the machine after prior consultation by qualified personnel and if necessary use with aids.

    • Keep children and visitors away from the workplace. Children and visitors must reside in a safe area outside the working area. Make the workplace safe for children by shutting off the workshop, interrupt or shutting off the supply.

    • Do wear appropriate clothing. Danger from rotating parts. Wear tight-fitting clothes. Drop scarves, rings, bracelets or other jewelry and garments, which can get caught in the moving parts. Wear safety footwear and watch for a non-slip floor. Wear a hat/hair net that protect long hair. Avoid wearing gloves, which can get caught in the turning.

    • Use personal protective equipment (PPE). Ear protection: Various materials can produce a higher noise level when turning. In these cases when working, wear ear protection.

Eye / face protection: When working with the machine always wear goggles. Always use a full fledged eye- or face protection. Normal eye glasses are usually only shock-resistant and protective goggles protect only your eyes. A face protection protects eyes and face.

Respiratory protection: Various kinds of wood, exotic wood or other harmful substances, as well as certain types of work such as cutting, grinding, drilling can produce dusts that are hazardous to your health. Get yourself appropriately informed. Therefore only use the ma-chine in well ventilated rooms and wear respiratory protection (PPE). Also use a suitable dust extraction and/or filtering of the circulating air.

    • Do not work in wet and dangerous environment. The MIDI FU-350 wood lathe is intended for indoor use only. Protect the lathe from damp or humid locations. Do not expose the lathe to moisture. Provide adequate lighting and ventilation of the workplace. Avoid areas with explosive atmosphere. The non-observance of the rules can lead to warranty and guarantee loss.

    • Keep the work area clean! Not cleaned workplaces and tables can cause accidents. Do not turn the machine on until all items (tools, pieces of wood and such) have been removed of the lathe. Keep the immediate working area and the floor free from dirt and surrounding off-cuts. Accumulated sawdust are a risk of fire and accidents.

    • Fire protection Take note of the fire alarm and fire-fighting facilities such as location and use of fire extinguishers. Regu-larly remove the shavings inside the bench bed on the electric motor so that the motor continues to be provided with the necessary cooling.

    • Take note of the electrical safety standards. Make sure the electrical installation where you connect the lathe is proper. Only use the supplied safety plug. Do not use extension cords. The used safety sockets must be fused with 16 amp. Disconnect the machine from the power supply before attempting any user maintenance or repair.

    • In case of power failure, the workpiece is no longer slowed down. The phasing-out of the speed may take some time to complete.

    • Avoid unintentional starting. The lathe is electrically ready to use when you connect the safety plug to the operator-side socket. Use the switch on the mobile control box to switch on and off. After work ends, pull the plug out of the socket.

    • Never run the machine unattended. Do only leave the machine when it turned off and stopped.

  • • Protective devices Leave existing protective device on their positions and keep them operable.

    • Use the correct tools. Only use suitable tools or accessories for the turning work. Avoid an unnecessary load on tool. Hold the turning tool in good condition. Sharp and clean tools guarantee best and safe results. Also bring the tools in the right position to the workpiece.

    • Never step on machine and tools. A tilting machine or accidentally touched incisive tool can cause serious injury.

    • Remove adjusting key and wrench. Never leave the socket wrench in the chuck. The socket wrench can be thrown out by starting the chuck and cause serious injuries. Make a habit of making sure that any tool has been removed before switching on the machine.

    • Cleaning the lathe. Turn off the lathe before cleaning and disconnect the mains plug. Use a brush to remove shavings and dirt.

    • Attention at work. Focus on your operation. A distraction through talks or carelessness can lead to serious injuries. Always ensure a correct body posture and balance. Do not operate the machine when you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication.

    • Check for damaged parts. Before you use the lathe or tools, carefully inspect them for damage. Make sure that these parts are in a proper condition and their intended function is guaranteed. Check the alignment and fastening moving parts. Defective parts can affect the operation and cause inju-ries. Damaged parts must be repaired professionally or replaced.

    • Work on the lathe When turned off electric voltage, check the spindle by turning it by hand whether the workpiece can move freely. Check the workpiece to prevent a breaking out of parts of the workpiece during the turning. Keep in mind that hollow areas or wide cracks can still be liquid after hours when using adhesives, also Cya-noacrylate Superglue. They can then when turning, due to the centrifugal forces, get out and be thrown towards the flying chips, therefore in the direction of the turner, and be a risk of injury or pose a health hazard. Before starting the spindle, always check whether the correct speed is set. Use of lowest speed for new or non-circular workpieces. Do the turning with recommended speed (table fig. 29). Never slow down outgoing workpieces by hand. Set the hand rest as close as possible (approx. 5-10 mm) to the workpiece. Turn the workpiece before each start by hand, to ensure that it runs freely. Turn off the lathe from time to time to adjust the hand rest.

    4. Functional instructions

A Midi FU-350 lathe is a machine, that is generally used to edit cylindrical or prismatic timber workpieces. Here, the workpieces with special fixing between headstock and tailstock or using special jigs (chuck, face plate, etc.) are clamped and driven by an electric motor. The machine is driven by the electric motor via pulleys on the spindle. The Midi has three speed groups (Translations) that you can choose. The fine tuning of the motor speed is done through a frequency conver-sion, which should be regulated over the potentiometer (short POTI) at the mobile control box so that you can adjust the motor speed continuously in the respective group speed. This will help you to choose a rea-sonable peripheral speed according to the workpiece diameter. This improves the security when turning and the quality of the workpiece surface. To turn on the drive unit, first connect the plug of the Midi in the operator’s existing grounded socket. Turn on the motor on the mobile control box (Fig. 2) and adjust the motor speed slowly up on the potentiometer.

Automatic shutdownThe Midi is equipped with a zero-voltage switch, which switches off the bench during a power outage and pre-vents a restart if the power supply is restored. If overloaded, the speed can be switched off by the frequency converter while turning. To be able to take the lathe back into operation in all cases, the cause must be eli-minated. During a power failure the power supply shall be restored, when lifting the cover it shall be closed again and when overloaded it shall be reduced or the pulley with the lower speed indication shall be chosen.

By means of the hand rest the turning chisel will be guided to the workpiece by hand, which entails a risk of injury, since the cutting forces must be absorbed by the operator. In order to derive the resultant forces, the turner knifes must continually lie firmly on the knife support. It is important that you read the manual carefully prior to first use to learn about the dangers which might arise caused by the operation of the machine (in particular rotating parts, occurring forces or danger of injury).

  • 6. Requirements for the set-up location

Requirement RecommendationSet-up location of the lathe Place the Midi FU - 350 in a dry interior close to a power source (mains).

Watch out for flat, firm and stable surface.Allow sufficient space in front of the machine as a workspace.Other established machines in the workshop shall not affect the operation of the lathe.

Lighting and ventilation Make sure that there is a good light (illuminance levels according to DIN5035) and ventilation. Additionally use an adjustable lighting system for your works-pace on the lathe, so that no shadows will be thrown on the workpiece. We recommend the establishment of a light source which worth at least 300 LUX, better has a 500 LUX on the cutting edge.If possible, place the machine near a window.

Electrical equipment A suitable standard household 230 V socket which is fused with 16 amp. is required to operate the lathe.Electrical cables and sockets must comply with local electrical regulations. If in doubt, ask your professional electricians. Avoid the use of an extension cord (see also the chapter « Connection of the lathe to the power supply»).

Ventilation Ventilate your workplace sufficiently. The degree of ventilation depends on the size of the workshop and the number of finished workpieces. The use of dust extraction systems and filters reduce your health risk.

Working height The lathe should be located such that the spindle center position is at the height of the operators elbow.

Working space Before the lathe shall be a free space of at least 80 cm.

Base unit Since the MIDI FU-350 is a benchtop, the operator has to ensure to use a pro-per installation space or a suitable base unit. Your dealer offers a base unit. The provided 3/8 «x 50 mm screws can be firmly connected to a base unit instead of using the feet.

  • IMPORTANT: The bench bed and the extensio n must be exactly aligned in order to move the tailstock easily over the joint. Tip: Before tighten the bench bed, run the tailstock of the liaison and tighten them. As a result, the fitting is aligned.

    4. If necessary, use a Hammer with a wooden block underneath or use a plastic hammer, to align the bed extension with the bench bed.

Never hit with a metal hammer directly on the metal surface!Knock until both surfaces and also the insides are fully aligned.

    5. Then tighten the hex screws definitively. However, make sure that the orientation of the two parts will not be changed any more.

An earthing-pin plug which is protected with up to 16 ampere must be available. The mains voltage and frequency must match the data on the rating plate on the lathe. The building must have a network protection, which is connected to the earthing-pin plug of the lathe. The supplied grounding plug may only be used with a properly installed, corresponding to the national elec-trical regulations and appropriate earthing-pin plug.

  • Tailstock

The clamp lever to lock the tailstock on the bench bed is attached to the rear side of the tailstock. It can be removed by loosen the circlip and replaced on the front side of the tailstock if desired.Check for a good clamping of tailstock on bench bed on a regular basis. The tailstock guarantees a precisely aligned line between centers and the driver. This guarantees a vibration free turning and is the best prerequisite for precise drilling with the tailstock. To move the tailstock on the bench bed, loosen the clamping lever and slide the tailstock to the desired position and fix it there again. To rotate the quill of tailstock out - or into it, loosen the quick-re-lease lever of the quill and turn the handwheel. Revolving cen-ters and tools with a morse taper n°2 (Mk2) can be used with the quill. 2 (Mk2) verwendet werden. To install the tools insert them quickly and firmly into the quill reception by hand.

    • Always wear eye protection

    • Make sure that the workpiece is clamped securely. Always start with a slower motor speed and increase it until reaching the optimum motor speed.

    • Unbalanced workpieces can be thrown out from the lathe at high motor speed and lead to serious injuries.

    • After pressing the EMERGENCY-button the lathe is preprogrammed to shut down slowly the rotational speed to zero. Do not try to stop the workpiece by hand during the phase-out. This carries the risk of injury from splinters and overheating.

    • Your fingers may get between workpiece and knife support bar.

    • Set the working position so that the height of the base unit and the lathe is ergono-mically optimized and choose the base unit so that the spindle height of the MIDI is at the height of your elbows.

    • In case of power failure, the workpiece is no longer slowed down. The phasing-out of the speed may take some time to complete.

    • The 4-prongs-carrier must grip securely. Pre-grain the workpiece by means of a 4-prong-carrier and a wooden hammer (see Fig. 36).

    • Use an intermediate support (bezel), in particular when starting vibrations, for long and thin or long workpieces.

    • Proceed cautiously when using the knife, in particular lay the knife on the knife sup-port bar and then bring it to the workpiece.

    • Only perform work with hazardous woods when using an extraction system or respi-ratory mask and goggles.

    • Do not use severe out-of-balance workpieces. In case of strong vibrations stop the machine immediately.

    • Do not use any workpieces with cracks or insufficient strength (e.g. decay)• Securely clamp the workpiece.• Select the chuck after the state of the art.• Select motor speed depending on the diameter of the workpiece.

  • Pay special attention to the clamping of the workpiece. It must be done as safely as possible. There are several possibilities. Consult books to do so, locate training opportunities or visit a woodturning course in our location.Pay special attention to the safety and not round running workpieces. Use a balanced speed, securely clamp the workpiece and try to eliminate the imbalance of the wood as much as possible before clamping.

Take a square piece of wood and first deter-mine the centre point on both ends. To do this, connect the endpoints with each other by diagonal pencil lines (see Figure 36). Al-ternatively, scantling centering devices are available in stores.

  • Adjust the hand rest

The lower part of the hand rest is set before the long wooden workpiece with the clamping lever.

The basic rule is: The wood should be cut with the tool. If the selected speed is too low, the wood will be «hammering» against the tools, tear out and considerable powers will be exer-cised on tools and workpiece. This can lead to dangerous situations. There-fore, it is better to select an appropriate speed (see fig. 29) . This will give you a better cut and lower forces act on the workpiece. Compare the work with a plane. If the plane is guided very slow, it is much harder to break down the fibers. ´

    Securing crossbars on a faceplate

Using chucks, read the operating instructions of the respective chuck.

A form - or spindle shape tube is used to edit the form. It intervenes significantly above the middle of the workpiece. Cylindrical shapes can be smoothed out with a chisel. Here again the chisel intervenes well above the middle of the workpiece.So-called «plates» are turned on with the plate or cutting steel. The steel is intervening again above the middle.

Rough tube, German typeWith the rough tube, a long timber in square or slightly rectangular shape can be roughed up into a round cylindrical shape. We distinguish between the English «U-form-» and the German «flat forged» rough tube. The English rough tube is only used for long timber, while the flat forged can be used also in terms of cross wood for the top and bottom.

Form- and spindle-shape tubeThe form tube is used to design large and small forms like covings, round rods etc. and for the last cut on long wooden parts.Changes in the diameter of the workpiece be offset partly by an adjustment with the forearm. Form tubes edit the timber carrier always slightly above the middle of the workpiece. Form tubes are used almost always light vertically and they ONLY cut with the bottom site of the the cutting edge, close to the front rounding. Also the chamfer is always created when cutting with the shape tube. The flat forged pipe of the roughing can be used also in terms of cross wood on the underside of the workpiece, however nowadays a shell tube is used almost exclusively. See also the video film «Introduction to the basics of the lathe» or «Bowl lathe» by Hans Schulte.

Rechteck- und OvalmeißelRectangle chisels are traditional tools and were always used for particularly fine surfaces with long wood turning. Oval skew chisels have only been available since the end of the 70’s and have been developed for machining long throats. Chisels are held with a side angle of approx. 45 ° to the workpiece (see fig. 41). The middle third of the cutting edge works. Here, the chamfer must be attached too.

Cutting- and plate steelWhen parting, the steel on the upper third line of the workpiece is applied and stabbed in the arc to the middle. When turning on a plate in the timber sector it is the same procedure, but only up to the desired diameter. For more information, visit a woodturning course, get our video program «fundamentals of the lathe», read in books, or be explained more by your specialist dealer.

  • Recommended speed selectionThe speed is in rpm, mainly according to the size of the workpiece. But also other features such as balance, weight, hardness, different density, etc. determine a safe speed. Selected speeds that are too slow usually do not allow making a smooth surface. Too high speeds, and the lathe starts to vibrate and there is the danger that the workpiece flies out from the clamping and causes serious injuries or damage.

    11. Care and Maintenance

Maintenance / care of the machine:

The FU-350 MIDI should be protected after every use, especially in high humidity, by a corresponding wax, silicone spray or other rust protection of all corrosion-enabled places such as bench bed, spindle thread with Mk2 and quill with Mk2 as well as some screw threads.Free the motor regularly with a brush or similar from the turning chips.Clean after each use bench bed, headstock and tailstock taper and the M33 spindle thread with a cloth soaked in methylated spirits or a commercially available solvent. Store or dispose the used cloth.

Especially when wet wood working, it is necessary to clean immediately all bare spots and to impregnate.Check the pulleys on dust and dirt and clean them if necessary after each use.

If put under heavy duty by drilling, the spindle thread in the tailstock must be greased 1 x per year or as nee-ded. For this purpose, the quill is pulled out completely with the handwheel. Access to the spindle lubrication is then possible.

All bearings are closed double-sided and do not need to be maintained.
