VALDEZ GETS CALL: LHP Framber Valdez, who was scheduled to start for Triple-A Fresno tonight, has been promoted to the Big Leagues. Valdez will join the Astros tonight in Seattle. Valdez won both of his Pacific Coast League assignments after opening the year with Corpus Christi. The 24-year-old southpaw scattered 3 runs and 5 hits over 5.2 frames last Tuesday vs. Las Vegas. Valdez held Albuquerque to 1 run on 3 hits in 3.0 innings August 9. Valdez, tabbed as the Astros Minor League Player of the Month for July, yielded just 1 ER in 4 assignments last month. The 24-year-old lefty struck out 37 against 6 walks and 13 hits in 22.1 frames. A 2018 Texas League Midseason All-Star, Valdez went 4-5 with a 4.10 in 20 games (13 GS) for Corpus Christi. At the time of his Triple-A promotion, Valdez was tied for second in the Texas League in strikeouts with 120 in 94.1 IP. He averaged 11.4 strikeouts per 9 IP at Double-A. Valdez is poised to become the 106th Corpus Christi alum to “graduate” to the big leagues. The 2018 class includes LHP Cio-nel Perez (Astros), OF Kyle Tucker (Astros), and OF Ramon Laureano (Athletics). Perez, who has posted a 3.86 ERA in 6 Major League appearances, was optioned to Fresno to make room for Valdez. REHAB REPORT: C Brian McCann and RHP Chris Devenski have been transferred to Corpus Christi from Fresno to continue their rehab assignments. McCann, who underwent surgery on July 3 to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, caught 5 in-nings for Fresno on Saturday. The veteran catcher was 1-for-7 with 1 run and 1 walk in 2 games at Tacoma. Devenski worked for the Grizzlies on August 14 and August 17, striking out 4 over 1.2 scoreless innings. The 2015 Hooks Pitcher of the Year has been on the disabled list since July 31 with right hamstring tightness. STRETCH RUN: The Hooks currently lead Frisco by 4.5 games with 14 to play in the Texas League South 2nd-half pennant race. Corpus Christi, the TL South 1st-half champs, enter play tonight with the best record in Double-A at 76-48 (.613). The Hooks have ran the table only once in their 13-year history. The 2013 club compiled an 83-57 record to win both halves. The franchise’s best overall record came in 2015 when the team won 89 and lost 51. AMAZING AUGUST ARMS: Corpus Christ dropped Sunday’s finale despite holding Springfield to a pair of hits. The 3-2 road trip continued a promising trend for Hooks pitching. The staff owns a 2.99 ERA, .201 BAA, and 1.01 WHIP in 16 August con-tests, striking out 149 against 40 walks thru 135.1 frames.
