The First Police Concert. For the first Police Concert to be held at the Victoria Hall, Barnard Castle, on Thursday, October 6th, a galaxy of talent has been engaged, the artists including some with universal reputations—Cecilia Farrar (soprano), Rispah Goodacre (contralto), Joseph Farriugton (bass), Collin Smith ('cello), Miriam Staincliffe (pianist aud accompanist), aud Selwyu Driver (Society entertainer, at the piano). We are sure many readers will keep the date free from other engagements in view of the 3| 1 ;ndid talent booked for that eveniug aud the rare entertainment to be provided. Scala Cinema. Miss Raine was so severely njurcd that she had to be taken to Darlington Hospital for treatment. Mr Ascough's con- dition prevented his removal from Mickleton LI til yesterday. We learn that Miss Raine suffered very serious injury to bar lower limbs and is not yet out of danger. Mr Ascough's condition yesterday showed a slight improve- ment. Teesdale this year, one well-known farmer describing it as the worst for forty years, so much of the grass having been cut tiefore tho recent heavy rains and become so saturated that its value will be merely manttrial. Later crops of seed hay are more promising if fine weather comes. E a r l y s o w n turnips are doiug fairly well, but those sown later caught the fly aud are a failure. Cereals are doiug very well indeed, there being some good crops of wheat, barley aud oats in prospect, but it is expected that a good deal of sickle work will be required where fields have been " laid " b y wind and rain. Wborlton Mothers' Union. A meeting of tho Whorltou branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Tuesday, August 16th. There was a very good attendance. Proceedings began with a service in Church. Prayers were read b y t h e ' V i c a r ( R e v . E . E. Gleaves), Miss I . T h o m p s o n , of Etherley, officiating at the organ. The Rev. C. R. Appletou, Vicar of Seaham Harbour, delivered au eloqueut and moving address, which was highly appreciated, from t h e w o r d s " I s i t well with thee ? i s i t well with t h y h u s b a n d ? i s i t well with the child'? (II. Kings iv., 26). After the service au adjournment was made to the Vicarage for tea and music, aud au inspection of the beautiful rose gardens brought the occasion to a close. " White Cargo " at the Victoria Hall. " White Cargo," a wonderful play, which ran for over two years i u L o n d o n a n d New York to crowded houses, and which is to be performed at the Victoria Hall, Baruard Castle, on September 2nd and 3rd, deals with life in the tropics, not the civilised tropics of clubs, motors, evening dress for dinner, etc., but the tropics of a small up river West African rubber station, with a h a n d f u l o f w h i t e m e n trying, for tho most part unsuccessfully, to struggle agaiust the heat, the loneliness, the entire abseuce of civilisation, drink aud other tempta- tion. A l l p l a y s which deal with life as it has to be faced under exciting and abnormal conditions are destined, all else being equal, t o m a k e a strong appeal to English people, and in " White Cargo " that appeal is instant, deliberate, and effective. The play teems with thrill, and the final fall of the curtain finds the audience applauding with the heartiest spontaniety. White C a r g o " i s a p l a y which should not be missed. The company, under the personal direction of Heury Chattell, who plays W\stou : T h e m a n w h o s t a y s , " is a specially selected one, a u d t h e production is complete in every detail. Coldstrcams' Band at Barnard Castle. Wet weather, which has interfered with many out-door functions at Barnard Castle this seasou, had a very serious effect upon the visit of the baud of the Coldstream Guards which was engaged by the trustees of the Bowes Museum to play in the park on Saturday afternoon and evening. It was impossible to get an audience i n t h e p a r k i n t h e afternoon, so the musiciaus under the direction of Lieut. R. G. Evans, went into t h e m u s e u m and gave an excellent programme to an appreciative audience who had the somewhat unique experience of hearing instrumental music within the building. In the evening the Witham Hall was engaged, and the band had an audience which occupied nearly every seat and much of the stauding room at the rear. It was a beautiful programme and the requests for the repetition of some of the items were very hearty. Among the more striking numbers were the cornet solos of Sergeant George Morgan, aud the xylophone solo of Musician Alex Borland, a really clever perform- ance. The programmes were of a kind rarely h e a r d i n t h e n o r t h , a n d i t w a s a pity that the weather conditions prevented larger audiences from enjoyable them. BY OUR CORRKSPONDBNT. MiddU'ton-iu-Tcesdalc Wesleyans had a great day on Thursday at their floral fair and sale of work. Although the weather was very depressing a good gathering of people attended. The Rev. C. I . Brcnd presided and in introduc- ing M r a n d M r s J . H . Armoury, of Cotherstoue, who had come to open the bazaar, explained why such a function was necessary. Mr Armoury, in rising to open the sale, said he hoped everybody would empty their pockets. The churches and chapels iu the couutry were much prettier than those in the towns, and Middle ton-in-Teesdale church was no exception". He said he envied Mr J. Robson who was present at the stone-laying of the c h u r c h a n d thought how proud he (Mr Robson) must be to be present on this occasion. Mrs Armoury i n a neat little speech then declared the sale open. Mr R. W. Raiue, J.P., proposed a haarty vote of thanks t o M r a n d Mrs Armoury. He said that during his 45 years' connection with tho church he bad never seen a bazaar so easily worked. Indeed, four months ago no one thought of it, and now they saw the fruits of their labour. Mr John Walton seconded the proposal which was very heartily carried. Miss B. Brignall then sang a solo which was well received. Mr Armoury briefly replied and said the next thing for everybody to do was to clear tho stalls which iucluded dairy produce, basket and china, flower stall, needlework, men's stall, soda fountain, novel fishing pond, and fiue art collection. Afternoon tea was served in cafe style. At intervals half-hour concerts were rendered by the choir iu a most creditable manner. The proceeds, which amounted to over £150, were in aid of the church renovation scheme. The sale was continued on Saturday with good results. Grouse shooters at Wemmergill, Holwick and Middletou havo had good sport despite the abnormally wet weather during the last week. Mr Turner's party shooting at Pike Law Fell on Wednesday shot a white grouse, a rare occurrence. The remaius of the late Mr Joseph Colliusou, of West Field, whose sudden death we reported last week, were laid to rest at Laithkirk on Tuesday afternoon amidst every token of sympathy and kiudly regard. Mr Colliusou w a s h e l d i n the greatest esteem throughout the dale. The deepest sympathy is extended to the widow aud the three daughters. Many years have passed since there have been such heavy floods iu Upper Teesdale as those experienced during the last week. The continued rain is becomiug most serious for the farmers. Iu the higher reaches of the dale, quite a lot of hay has yet to be won, and following t h e b a d hay harvest of last year, circumstances make things look very serious iudeed for agriculture in the dale. News came to Middleton o n M o n d a y o f the sudden death i n L o n d o n o n S a t u r d a y o f M r Joseph C o l t m a n , w h o h a d beeu spending a holiday with his daughter, M r C o l t m a n , w h o was about 82 years of age, bad lived iu Middleton for many years, having been formerly the caretaker of Middletou House. He had lately been living in retirement. He was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church iu the town, and for many years he acted iu the capacity of circuit steward. He was also at one time superintendent o f t h e Suuday School. He leaves a widow and a son and a daughter, with whom much sympathy has beeu expressed. Mr Coltman's remains will be interred at Middletou iu - Teesdale this (Wednesday) afternoon, following a service in the Primitive Methodist Church. IN THE COUNTY COURT. before his THURSDAY. At Barnard Castle, Honour Judge Richardson. A Staindrop Possession Case. James Smelt, Staiudrop, sued Mrs Mary Cowie, Front Street, Staiudrop, to obtain possession of a dwelling-house and arrears of rent amounting to £18 5s. M r J . D . W a t s o n , from the office of Mr J. Ingram Dawson, Barnard Castle, appeared for the plaintiff, Plaintiff said he let " The Lindens," to Mrs Cowie iu 1921 at a rental of £16 a year on a yearly tenancy, the rent being payable quarterly. On November 22ud, 1921, under the Rent Restriction A c t , h e served her with a notice that the rent would be increased to £22 8s. per annum. The extra rent was paid up to 1923, but it had not been paid since, the defendant having apparently never been able to pay right up. She had made small payments of £2 or so, and the arrears now amounted to £18 5s. His H o n o n r : Will there bo any objection to a suspension of the order for possession provided the defendant continues to pay ? Mr W a t s o n : My instructions are t o a p p l y for possession. Defendant said she took the house a t £ 1 6 a year and agreed to do the necessary repairs, and she had not received a statutory notice for the increase of the rent. His Honour : After receiving the notice, you are liable. Defendaat: I a m prepared t o p a y the in- creased r e n t , a n d I c a n p a y i f I a m g i v e n t i m e His H o n o u r : H o w m u c h t i m e ? Defendant: I will p a y £ 2 a m o n t h . His H o n o u r : I suggest a stay of execution provided t h a t s h e p a y s £ 2 a m o n t h . Mr W a t s o n : T h a t i s a reasonable offer, but I have to ask for possession. Defendant tells me she is seeking another house, and there will be no objection to our having possession iu t w o m o n t h s o r o n e m o n t h . His Honour: The usual course is to give people a chance w h e n t h e y come under the Rent Restriction Act. The usual course i s t o make an order and let it stay while the arrears are being paid. Mr Watson : We base the application on the fact that the rent is in arrear. His Honour (to defendant) : How much time do you want to get another house ? Defendant: I can have one as soon as there is one ready. I would like this house put into sanitary condition. His H o n o u r : I h a v e n o t h i n g t o d o with that So long as you are in the house y o u a r e b o u n d to pay the rent. Defendant: I took the house so t h a t I might have summer visitors. I n o w h a v e m y m a r r i e d daughter living with me. I think she can find another house. I am in arrear owing to illness His Honour said plaintiff was entitled to an order for possession, and he would suspend it while the defendant continued to pay off the arrears. H e m a d e an order for possession in two months and for the payment of the arrears at the rate o f £ 2 a month and the costs on both claims. DURHAM COUNTY SHOW. The Council of the D u r h a m C o u n t y Agri cultural Society, at t h e i r m e e t i n g i n D u r h a m on Saturday, decided to renew the holding of their County Show next year and further to postpone indefinitely suggested almalgamation with other county societies. [BY O U R O W N REPRESENTATIVE ,j Wandering near the top of the town of Barnard Castlo recently wo dropped into tho stone yard of Messrs R. Wilson aud Sons, builders, and found au interesting industry in progress—the m a k i n g o f concrete blocks for building, aud having iu view the excellent substitute for bricks that those blocks form, wo spent an- interesting hour ^with Mr Robert Wilson in witnessing a demonstration of how easily thoy are made. It should bo understood that the building blocks consist mainly of two kinds, inner aud outer, and their main attribute is their vulnerability against wet weather and damp. Houses are invariably built in these days with walls that have a cavity between the inner and outer " leaf," and here w e s a w made the breeze " blockers " widen form the inner shell and the rock-faced slabs that constitute the outer covering. These breeze slabs are made of breeze and limestone chippings mixed with cement in the proportion of 8 to 1, and when dry look likely to withstand all assaults resulting from the weather. The mould having been prepared of the required dimensions, the aggregate, as the mixture is palled, is brought from the store and poured iu, beaters being used for the purpose of eusuriug that every corner of the mould is filled. 1 Two slabs, each inches thick, 13 inches wide, aud 2ft. Gin. long, are tumid out at once, and as soon as made seem incapable of failing apart. Two men working together can turn o u t t w e n t y o f these blocks per hour, besides mixing aud carrying the ingredients. The output, of course, could be doubled with t w o o t h e r men engaged in the mixing aud carrying process. The slabs for the outer shell of the houses are a little more elaborately made, tho moulds having the pattern that gives the rock face to the slabs when completed. These moulds, made of aluminium, light and durable, are placed i u t h e bed of' the machine, .which is divided so as to give the sizo of slab required. The depth is generally 4.1 i n c h e s and the width of the blocks 61 inches, but the length can be anything from 10 inches to 2ft. Gin. Thus you can have six blocks ten iuches long or five blocks 12 inches long, or a collection of tho respective lengths of ,10, 12, 1 8 a n d 20 inches all turned out at once. The proportion of the aggregate for the inside of these rock- faced blocks is 6 to 1, but they are faced with a strong mixture of saud and cement iu tho ratio of 11 to 1 rendering the face impervious to rain. B y t h e use of ferro-concrete these blocks a r e a t a p i n c h fit for use three days after manufacture, but they are generally allowed to stand 14 days, and of course at the e n d o f a m o n t h t h e y a r e absolutely safe, and can eveu withstand fire. In the same way window heads and sills, steps, flags, channelling, kerbing, mullions, moulded cornices, quoins and other things required by builders are turned out. I t i s interesting t o k n o w t h a t t h e limestone clip- pings come from the H u l a n d s Q u a r r y o f the L.N.E.R., near Bowes. Mr R. Wilson was ablo to show us the concrete blockers iu actual use, for he has been using tbem for building some very convenient little houses in Wilson Street. These resi- dences have the very pleasing appearance of stone-built dwellings. The walls have a 2i inch cavity, so that there is a constant stream of air between the iuner and outer shells. Perhaps the best w a y o f presenting the comparative cheapness of concrete for building is showu iu the price for which a house of the kitchen type can be erected. These houses have three bedrooms ou the first floor, while on the ground floor are the living room, bathroom, scullery, pautry, a coal cup- board aud auother cupboard under the stairs, beside a vestibule of reasonable dimensions. With a 22 feet frontage and a depth including garden of 100 feet, all freehold, these houses, with the help of the Government subsidy of £75, can be sold complete and ready for occupation for £450, which as things go now-a- days cannot be regarded as over much to pay for a dwelling-house in which' a modern slow- burning kitchen range gives contstant hot water besides cooking the food, and the family washing is boiled i n a gas-heated set-pot, and all the sanitary accommodation is within the four walls of the dwelling. MR JOHN BLENKINSOP'S RETIREMENT. Mr John Bleukinsop, Barnard Castle, who this week-end retires from the service of the General Post Office, has been for more thau forty years engaged in the capacity of letter- carrier in connection with Barnard Castle Post Office. The reason of his retirement is that he has reached the age limit of sixty years, and it is gratifying to his many friends to know that in his well-earned retirement he will receive au allowance iu the form of superannua- tion which will g o t o w a r d m a k i u g h i m com- fortable for the remainder of his life. M r J o h n Blcnkiusop's association with the postal service goes back to t h e t i m e w h e n t h e l a t e M r J o h n Monkhouse was postmaster and the post office was in Newgate, where M r G . S. Staiusby now has his tailor's shop. Under the window ou the west side of the shop may still be seen the marks showiug wliere the letter-box used to be. Mr Bleukinsop joined tho postal service ou January 7 th, 1887, as au auxiliary postman. Iu those days the ouly regular postmau was the late Mr Richard Pearson—" Dick Pearson " to his familiars. Mr Pi 'arson had been in the service for many years, aud tho files of the Teesdale Mercury contain the records of several occasions on which public subscriptions were raised to provide him with a uniform. That, however, is by the way. Mr Blenkinsop, who had been fotlowiug the trade of a carpenter and joiner, found the postal service to his liking, aud was in duo time appointed a regular post- mau. Aud so lor forty years he has beeu engaged, day i u a u d day out, bearing to the people of his native town those missives fraught with good and ill, expected and unexpected, welcome and unwelcome, con- taining messages o f j o y a u d tidiugs of sorrow which fill so large a place iu the day of the average modern man and womau. Iu all weathers and uuder all conditions he has performed his daily duty to the satisfaction of his superior officers, aud it is safe to say that he leaves the service with tho goodwill of those iu authority and the best wishes ot his fellow-townsmen for a quiet aud happy even- tide. ' H o could have remaiued longer as a postman, but he has siezed au opportunity for making way for a younger mau. Mr Blenkinsop has served uuder seven postmasters at Baruard Castle. Mr Moukhouse was succeeded by Mr Parkinson, aud after him came successively Mr Brown, M r A r m s t r o n g , Mr Dockrill (who quite recently retired from the postal service iu Devonshire aud is now iu retirement in the Isle of Wight), Mr George Ruff (whoso death two years ago was so much regretted), aud tho present postmaster, Mr Britton. Mr Blenkiusop served for tweuty-three years in t h e D u r h a m Light Infantry, having joined the 2nd Volunteer Battaliou a t a t i m e w h o u the late Captaiu H o m e w a s i u c o m m a u d aud Colonel H. C. Watson was Lieuteuaut. This battaliou afterwards became tho 6th D.L.I. In 1903 he received the Long Service Medal of King Edward VII., which w a s h a n d e d t o h i m a t Bishop Auckland by General Sir John French. He was with the battalion iu camp on Salis- bury Plain at the time of tho South African War, and ho attended many other camps at Ripon, Aldershot, Conway, Morpeth, Scar- borough, etc. M r a n d Mrs Blenkiusop have six sons, of whom five served in the Great War, the youngest, Mr Fred Blenkinsop, now Sanitary Inspector under the Startforth Rural District Council, being still below military age when the war terminated. Mr Blenkinsop's father was sextou aud bell- ringer at Barnard Castle Parish Church, aud part of his duty was to ring the Curfew bell aud the waking bell. He tells an amusing story of how ou one occasion when he was deputising for his father excess of zeal led him to mistake the hour of the morning, for he actually rang the wakiug bell at five o'clock iustead of six, rousiug the town an hour earlier thau was necessary ! It was a long time before the mill bauds living in Bridgegate forgot this unjustified interfer- ence with their hours of slumber. Iu forty years Mr Bleukiusop has seen uiauy changes i n t h e town of Baruard Castle. When he first carried letters there was no house iu Galgate above the shop of Mr George Craig. Above that was Hunter's Nursery, with a narrow roadway where Johu Street now is. Bede Terrace was only partly built, aud of course the various Victoria Terraces and other Bede Terraces, with their conflicting designa- tions of East aud West aud North, wore scarcely iu contemplation. A keeu gardenor aud horticulturist, Mr Blenkinsop is the proud possessor of au allot- ment garden in which much of his spare time is spent aud he is an enthusiastic grower of the loganberry, haviug in the little back garden of his house in Edward Terrace a magnificent specimen of this plant in full fruitage. During his long associatiou with the Post Office Mr Blenkinsop has done about thirty thousand rouuds of the town—for at one time there were Sunday deliveries—and it will be quite safe to say that altogether he has tramped at least a hundred thousand miles in the service of the public besides making those daily journeys to and from the railway station with tho outgoing aud incoming mails which are part of the'ordiuary postman's duty. He will continue to live i n t h e towu, aud his cheerful presence will, we all hope, be for mauy years a daily delight to those, who know him as a friend and neighbour, and take pleasure iu having a " c r a c k " with him. Our photograph, taken by the late Mr Owen S. Scott, curator of the Bowes Museum, although some years old, shows Mr Bleukiusop iu the uniform in which he will be loug remembered. SOME OF THE SCHEDULES. Baruard Castle opened the agricultural show seasou i u t h i s p a r t o f t h e c o u u t r y aud from now until the middle of October there will be a succession of shows, nearly every Saturday being occupied aud some Wednesdays. BOWES. Mr V . E . G a t e n b y , the popular secretary of the Bowes Agricultural Society, has issued the schedule of prizes for the 51st auuual show to be held at Gilmonby ou Saturday, September 10th, and there is evidence of a desire on the part of the committee to make this old established fixture eveu more popular than hitherto. There are 97 classes, of which twenty are set apart for shorthorn cattle, fourteen for horses and Dales ponies, and thirty-four for sheep, the remainder compre- hending bread aud teacakes and dairy produce, etc. Swaledale sheep will ouce more be a strong feature of the show, there being no fewer than six silver challenge cups to be competed for by breeders, including the Swaledale Challenge Cup, the Mil bank Challenge Cup, the Wilson Challenge Cup, the Rochdale Challenge Cup, and Sir John Headlani's Challenge Cup, the last being offered for the best sheep on the grouud. The others mentioned are given by Sir Frederick Milbank, Bart., Colonel Sir Murrough J. Wilson, M.P., and Lord Rochdale, the sporting lessee of Bowes Moor. M r W . H u u t o u York is giving a silver cup for a collection of Swaledale sheep, a n d M r William Deut, Naby, a silver tea service for the best female sheep shown. Entries for the Bowes Show close on September 5th. EGGLESTON. The schedule of Eggleston Agricultural Show is of the customary bulky character, aud there is uo lack of interest likely to be shown iu this annual event which is fixed for Saturday, September 17th. Entries close on September 3rd to the secretary, Mr G. N. Dalkiu. There are uo fewer thau 177 classes, of which 100 are set apart for cattlo, horses, sheep, dogs, goats, field produce, etc., and the remainder for poultry, horticulture, aud farm and dairy produce, bread, butter, eggs, cheese, wool, etc., including honey, home-made wine, a n d j a m . There arc two trotting handicaps and a pony scamper, and there is a special class for lady riders. There is also a leaping competition with free entrauce. GRAINS-O'-BECK. For the first t i m e i n i t s loug life the historic Graius-o'-Beck Agricultural Show is being moved from the fourth Saturday in October to a Wednesday in September, the date fixed beiug September 21st. The alteration of the date is in the nature of au experiment, a n d t h e result should be an increase iu the attendance aud iu the interest shown iu the eveut. This will be the 91st auuual show at Graius-o'-beck, aud it is hoped that the decision of the promoters will meet with popular favour. HIGH FORCE AND HOLWICK High Force and Holwick Show has been fixed for Saturday, September 24th, and Mr G. W. Bell, of the Strathtuore Arms, Holwick, is again carryiug out the secretarial duties. MIDDLETON-IN-TEESDALE. Schedules are now ready for the aunual show of the Middleton-in-Teesdale Agricultural Society which takes place at Middletou House ou Saturday, September 3rd, aud may be said to open tho list of shows in Upper Teesdale. The secretay is Mr F. Watson, Buru B a n k , a n d the last day for receiving entries is next Monday. August 29th. The popular sheep dog trials are agaiu iucluded in tho programme, aud these are likely to provide entertainment for a large number of spectators, the grouud being so well suited for a full view o f t h e dogs from the start to the finish of their work. Riding aud driviug classes are agaiu iucluded aud there will be a musical ride for motor cycles. The railway company is issuing return tickets at a single faro to Middleton-in- Teesdale o u t h a t day. WOLSINGHAM. Entries close on Weduesday, August 31st, for the 158th meetiug iu connection with '• The Old S h o w e " at Wolsiugham, which interesting event takes place on Woduesday, September 7th, when there will bo classes lor horses, cattle, sheep, goats, honey, horticulture, dairy aud field produce, riding and driviug aud leaping. There is a graud industrial school sectiou aud the wonderful exhibition g i v e n b y " Star I'ony." the guideluss aud riderless trotter, which iu 1926 caused t h u p u b l i c t o be so amazed aud delighted, will be again given aud exteuded t o m o r e thau oue horso going guideless and riderless rouud the track.
