India’s new Tourism Minister AlphonsKannanthanam said his ministry had a “great role”to play in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream ofcreating a new India where all citizens can live withdignity. The bureaucrat-turned-politician, who wasappointed as minister of state for tourism (inde-pendent charge) yesterday, refused to sit in hisdesignated chair, waiting for almost an hour for hispredecessor, Dr Mahesh Sharma, to arrive andhand him charge of the ministry. The camaraderiewas evident as Sharma, who was in a meeting,walked in and the new inductee insisted that hispredecessor claim the minister’s high backed chair.

He has donea fantastic job in tourism and culture and I amhappy that I get to start where he left off,” he said.The new minister is known for his strong anti-cor-ruption stance. Spelling out his vision for the future, Kannanthanam said India can take over the world asit is a 5,000-year-old civilization. “We can go much much beyond incredible India. We want tocreate a India where we love ourselves, love a clean India and its history. Then we tell theworld, come and see us,” said the 1979 batch IAS officer. He also came in for high praise fromSharma, the minister of state for culture as well as environment, who likened him to a “flower”who had been handpicked for the job. “Today my big brother and friend with whom I have hada familial relationship for more than 30 years and a resident of Noida is taking charge as thetourism minister. I have always taken directions from him. He has created an image of himselfas an able administrator,” Sharma said, holding Kannanthanam’s hand as they sat side by side.

“The PM has for this reason handpicked Alphons for the job. He is like a flower that Modihas picked from a bouquet. When the tourism development rate globally is 4.7% India’s is17.3%. I hope next time when these statistics are issued, Alphons would have bettered this,”he added. Kannanthanam, a Kerala cadre officer, first shot to limelight during his tenure with theDelhi Development Authority in the 90s and earned the sobriquet ‘demolition man’ after he gotscores of illegal constructions demolished.

Indian women biggest participantsof adventure tourism in South Africa

Heritage (SCTH) has said that the countrywill allocate $2.67 billion (SR9.9 bn) to thedevelopment and rebuilding of tourismprojects in Saudi Arabia. Six new initiativeshave been approved and will commenceunder the “National Transformation Program2020.” The initiatives include the developmentof integrated tourism destinations in Al Ula,Fursan Islands, and Al Raas Al Abyad Shore.Also, 80 archeological sites will be devel-oped - of which three will be listed on theUNSECO’s World Heritage List. Additionally,

122,000 student tours will be facilitated by 2020 under the “Live Saudi Arabia” programme.The head of the achievements of the kingdom’s Vision 2030 in SCTH is Mohamed Al

India sees over 15% growth in foreigntourist arrivals

India has registered a growth of over 15 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals from January toJuly this year, with many opting for e-visa facility , the tourism ministry said in a statement.

The highest number of tourists arrived from Bangladesh (20.12 per cent), followed by theUS (16.26 per cent), the UK (10.88 per cent) and France (3.01 per cent), said the statementwhich was released on Wednesday.

Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) from January to July, 2017, were 56.74 lakh, recording agrowth of 15.7 per cent as compared to 49.03 lakh in the corresponding period last year, it said.

A total of 7.88 lakh foreign tourists arrived in India in July, an increase of 7.4 per cent ascompared to the same month last year, it said.
