DEAR SISTERS & BROTHERS IN CHRIST

A whirlwind of activity begins as the Holy Spirit blows through our Scriptures and the life of the Church as we approach Ascension and Pentecost Sundays. Graduates and acolytes and Sunday School teachers will be celebrated. Eight Confirmands will make their vows in ten days. And we have been so blessed by the support and encouragement of our District Superintendent, Rev. Joseph Archie, whom I count as trusted friend and colleague, and who has been instructive to our SPRC and other teams and will continue to be a rock of guidance as we go through pastoral transition. I give God thanks for his wisdom and discernment, along with the guidance, of our Bishop as we navigate change. These next 6 ½ weeks will go quickly with the Youth Mission Trip, Vacation Bible School, planning, packing and praying.

Thank you to those who have already stepped into the breach as we live and love these moments together.

In Christ’s service and love,

Pastor Karin

NOTES from the LOFT

A new hymnal is coming in 2020!

A diverse group of lay people, clergy, musicians, scholars, teachers, and worship leaders serving on the Hymnal Revision Committee of The United Methodist Church met for the first time earlier this year in Nashville.

The meeting marks the beginning of a two year effort to identify songs and worship resources that can be made available to congregations in traditional printed and bound hymnals; as well as through multiple media, including digital downloads and streaming

Going forward, the fifteen-member committee will establish selection criteria, implement a process for evaluating current and new materials, review and select hymn texts and hymn tunes as well as liturgical resources. They will also listen to and engage with congregations to understand their needs and support their ministries.

The Hymnal Revision Committee will present their recommendations at the 2020 General Conference.

Blessings, Shelley

SUMMER FELLOWSHIP In recent years, one person has organized the planning for the entire summer fellowship food. After discussions in our Leadership meeting, it was decided that this responsibility could be divided with each church group assuming one Sunday. It is recognized that some individuals may be part of one or more groups but each have several participants that could pick up for that individual or certainly you would be more than once welcome to participate should you desire. There is a posted schedule of dates for each group posted in Fellowship Hall. Since we shall have two services this summer we shall need someone responsible for setting up early and to clean up following Fellowship. Thank you in advance for your participation. Ann Newswanger

A special thank you to Carolyn Stanley for volunteering to become our Memorials Secretary effective June 1, 2018.

FLOWERS FOR WORSHIP Don’t forget to sign up to honor a loved one, to remember a dear friend, to celebrate a life event by providing flowers for worship. Sign up on the chart in Fellowship Hall. Remember to note the date and whom you are honoring and when preparing your arrangement, keep the colors of the liturgical season in mind.

A NEW ERA BEGINS Thanks to Charlii Miller, we now have an LCD mounted in our sanctuary, which will enhance many of our worship opportunities. We are still working on perfecting the new addition to our worship mix, but you can anticipate that we will be using it more frequently to augment worship and other events in the sanctuary.

to deepen our spiritual walk with Christ

Thursday, June 7 Skin Cancer – 7-8:30 PM Thursday, September 27 Core Exercise and Posture – 7-8:30 PM October Personal Safety You don’t want to miss these timely programs to encourage healthy lifestyle with special speakers! Women and men share many similar health problems, but women also have their own health issues, which deserve special consideration. The recognition that women have different health care needs then men has enabled changes to take place in care, research, and education which we hope to address. To be considered there are many related issues to why women are more likely than men having delayed care do to logistic reasons. Although there's many it has been historically known women tend to assure family is cared for first and with busy schedules she comes later. Saturday May 19 at 10 AM until noon we plan to celebrate you with a relaxing morning of fun and tips for caring for just you. On Thursday June 7 from 7-8:30 PM. Sunrise Family Dermatology will present a program with care for your skin, keeping skin healthy and help for the Sun worshiper. In the fall our first program will be dedicated to exercise. UNITED METHODIST MEN NEWS UMM STAYING ON PAR WITH GOD St. Paul's UMM finally got its Staying on Par with God underway for 2018 (no rain) and what a beautiful day God provided for us. Nine of the men took part in today's activities with the highlight being a special presentation on Tee # 1. Bill Foster who has lately been using a cane, an extra piece of

equipment in the hands, to approach the greens was presented with a Cane/Putter combo hand made by Billy Bush allowing for more comfort around the greens. Bill Foster apparently adjusted to the Cane/Putter rather quickly as on hole #5 Bill sank a " Birdie " putt!! (check out the pics) Just a great day of fellowship, food, golf and God. Our next outing is Monday, May 21 at 9 AM. Contact me if you would like to join us. God Bless! Paul

EVEN YOUNGER ONES CAN SERVE THE CHURCH! Thanks to Lucas, Sharyn Sheats’ grandson, for his help in watering our flowers!

FUNDRAISER FOR REFURBISHING OF THE HANDBELLS

Our current handbells were gifted to us by SilverLake School after sitting unused for several years. St. Paul’s has been

blessed with these three octaves with music which has enhanced our worship. However, handbells need

maintenance and care and sometimes “refurbishing” to maintain the quality of sound. We have also discovered that

one of our bells has a severe crack and must be replaced. Please look for the sign-up on the table in the Narthex if you are

interested in giving towards this opportunity.

TRUSTEES UPDATE At the last Trustee meeting the status of the trees at the back of the parking lot was disucsses and we share the following concerns: The trees are very old and pose a potential risk when the next storm hits. Depending on which way they could fall it could cause damages not only to church property but also to individual and or neighbors’ property. We cannot anticipate absolutely what insurance would cover, but we are trying to be forward thinking. We also want to take advantage of the very low price bid provided by Carl Meadwell to remove the trees. The estimate is available in the office for your review, but he is willing to do it for well under market price and is insured for the work. We know that the trees have served us well in the past, but after losing one in the last storm [we were fortunate that no one or any property was lost], they have become an increasing liability.

ACCESSIBILITY SURVEY IN NARTHEX

There have been several requests for improving accessibility to St. Paul’s. Our Trustees have put together a proposal for an outdoor lift & parking lot improvements. A draft of the proposal, photograph and estimated costs to the project are in the Narthex for your comments & questions. Please note your observations & leave in the basket in the basket provided.

FINANCE TIDBIT From time to time there are folks who literally appear on our doorstep in need of help. For example, this past weekend a young pregnant couple was in need of lodging and gas and laundry money and we were able to help them with funds through the local missions Yellow Hat.

JOY NEWS On Friday, May 18, Ed Okonowicz, from Delaware Humanities, will be at St. Paul’s at 7 PM to speak on “So You Think You Know All About Delaware.” Ed has spoken on several occasions at the Corbit-Calloway Library in Odessa and also in Springmill,

as well as all over the State. We are inviting you to bring guests and are inviting the OWLs Group from Tree of Life Church. We will be having light refreshments after the program. We will be taking the summer off, and have events in September, November and December in the planning stages. Sign-up sheets for the April event will soon be in the Narthex. Mark your calendars! We always invite suggestions and ideas for future meetings and hope to have many in attendance. Ann Raymond and Phyllis Burris

FAMILY LIFE DEPARTMENT UPDATES from Vicki Spence

THANK YOU to all who came out to Cantwell’s on Thursday to support the youth

mission trip. We had over 20 tables served and many take outs. We raised $346.87 to help support the trip. A BIG THANKS to Cantwell’s Tavern for donating 10-20% of various tabs to aid in this mission. The kids at St. Paul’s are a blessed & grateful group!

AGAIN…THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

The Youth Mission Bake Sale was a huge success. Youth made $760 to help with cost for the trip to Tarboro, N.C. in June. Thanks to the Hickey & Rodriguez Families for setting up and to the Rodriguez & Reitzes Families for cleaning up. Thanks to all the kids and parents who were willing to share their story, encouraged people to support their trip and even for providing curb side service to customers up and down High Street. It paid off! A BIG THANK YOU also to all of the parishioners who supported by making goodies to sell. It truly takes a village, whether you donated goods, money or came out to eat – it all adds up and you made a difference. St. Paul’s is certainly a village in the best sense of the word!

and see if you can help out. We are still in need of kitchen leader, food shopper & crafts leaders.

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT EL AYUDANTE We are deeply saddened about the loss of one of our former HCN children, Luis. Luis was involved in an accident over the weekend, and passed away. Our hearts are heavy for his family and friends. Please keep the Nororis family, HCN kids, and EA staff in your prayers.

JOYS & CONCERNS: Please take the opportunity to go to our website (www.stpaulsodessa.org) to complete a prayer request—it is the most convenient, 24-7 way to get your concerns on our prayer lists. Please alert the office when someone can be taken OFF the list by emailing [email protected]. Submitting a Prayer Request is the best and most assured way that your request will be added to the mid-week and worship folder but for HIPAA reasons PLEASE get permission before adding.

We do our best to keep up with the needs of our congregation, but we may not always have up-to-date information. If you or a loved one are in need of a pastoral visit, please call the church office to schedule. Blanche Bailey is at Broadmeadow and welcomes visitors. As many of you know, Natalie is very active in the mission life of St. Paul’s and has participated in all of the mission trips over the past three summers. She also serves our conference as a member of the Conference Council on Youth Ministries [CCYM]. Natalie is currently signed up for St. Paul’s mission trip to Tarboro, NC in June. Because mission work is so important to Natalie, she will also be participating in the mission of Severna Park UMC [I was a member prior to transferring to St. Paul’s and Natalie was baptized there.]

We are so excited that Natalie will be one of 80 youth and adults participating in the Appalachian Service Project [ASP] with Severna Park UMC. The group will travel to WV on June 23-30. The cost of the trip is $380. We are hoping that the congregation of St. Paul’s will support Natalie’s mission trip with a Yellow Hat offering. (Any monies collected in excess of $380 would help cover fuel charges for the numerous vehicles transporting the group to and from WV.) Upon Natalie’s return, she would be honored to share her testimony with the congregation of St. Paul’s. https://www.asphome.org/ Thank you for your consideration, Megan & Natalie Reitzes

PAK-A-SAK We collected 23 bags for Neighborhood House. As always, a huge thanks to Bill [who is recovering from rotator cuff surgery] & Margie Apps, who counted and delivered our offering.

FLAGS FOR HEROES FOR MEMORIAL DAY

Do you know someone that you would like to honor as a hero by sponsoring an American flag? Flags will be proudly displayed at Middletown High School, along Route 299, the week before and the week after Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day 2018. Heroes (past or present) could be a military member, first responder, teacher, parent or any other individual or organization that you admire. The project is being hosted by the Southern New Castle County Rotary Club, in partnership with the Middletown High School Air Force Junior ROTC. The cost is $50 for each hero. Checks are made to the SNCC Rotary Foundation. Please see Dick Leuliette for an application form. Call Dick at 302-378-2633 for more information.
