Location:Mieres is situated in the centre of Asturias in the North of Spain.
LocationThis city is located in a big valley and
has a beautiful river “The Caudal” .
LocationOur town is also called
Mieres del Camino because ‘El Camino de Santiago’ and ‘La Ruta de la Plata’ cross through it.
Location
It is one of the biggest towns in the area. It is very well situated, only 20km far
from Oviedo, the capital, and 34km from Gijón, on the coast.
Location
It was also one of the most famous mining valleys in the North of Spain.
Location Mieres is divided into two parts: North
and South. In the South there is a sport centre, a swimming pool and a medical centre. There are also two hotels, some schools and lots of shops.
LocationOur high school is in the South part.You can get here by car, by bus (N-630 /
A-66) or by train (RENFE –FEVE)
Population
Mieres county has about 146,03 km2 and 44,500 inhabitants. Our population is rather old, because there are more old people than young.
StreetsLike in New York, some streets cross Mieres from
North to South and form East to West. Most of this streets are the longest streets in Mieres.

ClimateAsturias climate can change from north to
south.
The main climate in the south is a mountain climate: cold and rainy the whole year.
The main climate in the north is the oceanic climate: warm in the summer and cold in the winter and rainy the whole year.

Asturian flora In Asturias, the apple tree and the chestnut
tree are the most important trees. With the apples, it´s common to make sidra.
Asturian animals
NeighborhoodsRequejo Square is the most famous
neighborhood in Mieres. It has many bars, and a statue of a man who is pouring sidra, a typical Asturian cider.
Requejo is very near San Juan´s church .
NeighborhoodsSanta Marina has got some parks. The houses in
Santa Marina form little blocks.
In the past Santa Marina was under water, because the river Caudal overflooded and the rest of the inhabitants from Mieres helped fix it.
NeighborhoodsIn San Pedro we have one of the three
high schools in Mieres called ‘El Batán’.It’s next to the highway for Oviedo, León,
Langreo and Gijón, so it’s very well communicated.
NeighborhoodsLA PEÑA: There we have the “EL LAVADERO DE
CARBÓN”.In La Peña we had two Mercury mines and a
lot of people worked there for many years. Nowadays all of them are closed.
Neighborhoods CENERA.On the 27th of September we celebrate a
festival called “LOS MARTIRES”.This celebration is very important for the
MIERENSES (people of Mieres)Cenera is the center for making “SIDRA”
NeighborhoodsIn LA VILLA we have many nightclubs like :
EL ESTUDIO, EL BULEBAR , EL LLAGARÓN.It´s the only part of Mieres that is dedicated
to going out..
NeighborhoodsIn Baiña there are rural houses and some
taverns where you can eat very well.The houses in Baiña are older than houses in
Mieres. In front of the houses we have the railroad.
Neighborhoods: OñónIt is near Requejo. It has some Roman
houses. Some people live in Oñon.We have an old cementery and a petrol
station there too.
NeighborhoodsTocote is a neighborhood in Mieres. There
are flats for people who don´t have a lot of money. The people only have to pay for water and electricity.
The government chooses the people by a lottery system (sorteo).
People usually ask ¨Did you win?¨ which in Asturian Spanish means ¨Tocote?¨ where the name comes from.
TOWN HALL:This is our town hall in ‘La plaza del
ayuntamiento.` The mayor is called Luis María García. It has three floors and three flags.
In the House of Culture or La Casa de Cultura, there is a library. It is on Manuel Llaneza street. Some years ago it was the Engineering School.
HOUSE OF CULTURE:
SCHOOLS:There are eight schools. The oldest one
is Santiago Apostol. It is 106 years old. But our favourite school is Sánchez Lastra!
Aniceto Sela was founded in 1925. There are two schools: Liceo Mierense and Aniceto Sela.
UNIVERSITY:In Mieres there is a science campus that
has 27 classrooms, 2 libraries, 1 auditorium, 69 labs...
PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE:There are two primary health centres in
Mieres. One is in the south and the other in the north part.
HOSPITAL:It is called Álvarez Builla. It is in a small
village near Mieres called Murias.
CHURCHES:There are four churches in Mieres. The most
important one is La Iglesia de San Juan.
SHOPPING CENTRE:The main shopping centre is called Caudalia. It is next
to Santullano (a little village near Mieres). There is a cinema and some shops.
PARKS:There are a lot of parks in Mieres. The most
important one is Jovellanos Park.
SUPERMARKETS:There are six supermarkets in Mieres: three Alimerkas, two Arbol and one Dia.
SQUARES:There are five squares in Mieres: the Requejo square, Plaza de la Libertad, Pepa la Lechera, La Plazina and the town hall square.
STATUES:
The international monument for the miner is very important. It was made out of bronze.
Inside of him there is a small flame that´s always burning as a tribute for the dead mineros.
STATUES:
The sculpture of Teodoro Cuesta, poet of Mieres is in Pasera`s square. It was made by Arturo Sordo.
El Escanciador, was made by Jose Manuel Félix Magdalena.
CASA DURO:
It is in the neighborhood of La Villa. It is known as the palace Alvarez Castañón too. It was built in the century XVIII. If you are interested in exhibitions you must visit it!

FESTIVALSCarnival is a very important festival for us but we never call
it ¨Carnival¨ in Spanish. We call it ¨Antroxu¨ in Asturiano.
FESTIVALSFolixa Na Primavera is a folk festival that we started
to celebrate in Mieres 14 years ago. Folixa na primavera is in April.
Folixa na primavera
In this festival we drink sidra or cider and eat traditional food which is very delicious. We have concerts in the park, listen to Celtic music, dance and sing.
FESTIVALSAnother important festival in Mieres is San Juan. On
the night of San Juan, there are a lots of legends about mythological caracters
FestivalsOn the night of San Juan we light a bonfire to honor these
spirits. We dance around the bonfire and write our wishes on pieces of paper that we throw into the fire and burn so that our dreams will come true.
FESTIVALSLOS MÁRTIRES: We celebrate this festival on the
27th of September in Valdecuna near Mieres and pay respects to Saint Cosme and Saint Damian.
