A MODEL OF STATE-SOCIETY RELATIONS
Society as a mlange of (informal and formal) organizations, ratherthan dichotomic approaches (center-periphery, modern-traditional,great-little tradition)
Organizations provide material as well as symbolic goods andincentives to populations, thus allowing them to pursue survivalstrategies
State and organizations struggle in order to determine whetherthe state will be able to displace other organizations
The capacity of the state relates to the structure of society.
Therefore, the latter has to be comprehended first It is the focus on this struggles which provides insights into social
change

A MODEL OF STATE-SOCIETY RELATIONS
Social control is reflected in: 1) Compliance, 2) Participation, 3)Legitimacy
The highest achievement of the state is legitimacy, since it impliescompliance not by calculation but by conviction (throughacceptance of the states myths)
