Identification of Uppercase and Lowercase Letters

Lesson Procedures:

1. Use the pretest at the appropriate reading stage (Emergent, Developmental, Fluent)

for this lesson. The teacher should rate the student’s skill level subjectively using the

4-point rubric indicated.

2. The teacher should explain students will be learning how to recognize and write both the

uppercase and lowercase letters of the English alphabet.

3. The following procedures should be used each day substituting different letters until all the letters

of the alphabet have been taught. Below is the example of each day’s lesson.

4. Introduce the name of the specified upper and lowercase letter:

Example: A a

5. Write on the board, chart paper or overhead projector “A B C D E” and “a b c d e” and make

an arrow pointing to the letter of the day. Discuss the letter of the day and show examples in

writing of how it is used. Use the letter of the day within the group of five letters being taught

that week.

6. Distribute the worksheet that corresponds with the letter of the day.

7. Have the students find and circle capital “A” and small “a” on the chart at the top of the letter

worksheet.

8. Point to the capital “A” and have students repeat the letter several times, repeat using the

lowercase “a”.

9. Describe as you model how to write both the capital and lowercase letters.

10. Have students locate and trace the capital and lowercase letter of the day in the top right corner

of the worksheet. Repeat the name of the letter as you are tracing.

11. Have the students locate capital “A” at the bottom of the page, trace both the solid and the

“dashed” letter and then make a row of their own. Repeat for the lowercase letter of the day.

Students should say the name of the letter as they are writing.

12. Have students name the picture on the worksheet and trace the word for the picture. Underline

the letter of the day and talk about how it is used in the word.

13. Give students a page from a book, an article from a newspaper, etc. and have them circle or

highlight as many of the letters of the day as they can find. They can work in pairs or small

groups to do this.

14. Collect worksheet to check student proficiency of writing of the letter.

15. Suggestion: the alphabet cards can be used as flash cards by students in small groups or with

partners. The cards can be cut in half with a zig-zag, curve, etc. to make “puzzle” pieces and

then students can match the uppercase to the corresponding lowercase letter. If the cut pattern

doesn’t fit together properly the students know that it is an incorrect match.

16. Administer the post-test to check for final comprehension after every five days (at the

end of a set of five letters) assess the specific letters the students have learned for

that week using the Uppercase/lowercase Alphabet Charts of the assessment. Follow

the directions as stated on them. See Assessment Procedures.

17. Record the letters that the students know on the Alphabet Letters Recording Sheet.

Teacher Procedures (cont.)

Identification of Uppercase and Lowercase Letters

ELL Recommendations:

Always speak slowly and continually check for background knowledge and understanding of

content. Always provide multiple examples and opportunities for students to practice recognition

and creation of uppercase and lowercase letters. Make sure students are exposed to real life

examples. It is always beneficial to use pictures or hands-on materials to further understanding. The

teacher should be aware that the English pronunciation of letters differs significantly from Spanish.

Use the English/Spanish Word Glossary to help find words in both languages that use the same

letters to help the transfer of first language to second language knowledge.

Assessment Procedures:

The pre- and posttest assessments are at the end of the lesson.

Pretest:

1. Give a pretest over all letters prior to that set’s instruction using the Uppercase/Lowercase

Alphabet Charts of the Assessment. Follow the directions as stated on the charts.

2. Record the letters that the student knows on the Pretest Name of Alphabet Letters Recording

Sheet. The teacher should rate the student’s skill level subjectively using the 4-point rubric

indicated.

Posttest:

1. Administer a posttest every five days or at the end of the set of five letters to determine the

student’s level of proficiency following the instruction of these skill(s). Assess the specific letters

the student has learned for the week using the Uppercase/Lowercase Alphabet Charts of the

Assessment. Follow the directions as stated on the charts.

2. Record the letters that the student knows on the Posttest Name of Alphabet Letters Recording

Sheet. The teacher should rate the student’s skill level subjectively using the 4-point rubric

indicated.

PLEASE NOTE: The English alphabet has 26 letters, but the Spanish alphabet contains 30. The

additional letters are ch, ll, ñ, and rr. Although the letters k and w are in the Spanish alphabet, they

appear only in foreign words. It is important to note that in Spanish, unlike English, each vowel possesses

only one sound: a, ah; e, ay; o, oh; u, u (in bull); y, ee. Teachers who are teaching students who are

learning to read in English and who are Spanish speakers, readers, and/or writers must be cognizant of

these aspects of both languages. Consequently, every effort was made to include vocabulary words that

share similar labels in both English and Spanish to help facilitate vocabulary development and reading

fluency whenever it was possible and appropriate. Therefore, when planning for instruction, teachers

should review the letter/letter sounds they intend to teach and select pictures/words accordingly.
