EXPERIENCEYour first few days will be an introduction to the classic Tanzanian safari experience. You will spend your first night dining on a decadent 4 course meal and resting in Arusha before your adventure begins. From there you head to Gibb’s Farm, which will be your comfortable base while you spend exciting days on safari in Lake Manyara National Park and in Ngorongoro Crater, where world class game viewing awaits.

From there it is a short flight to the Serengeti National Park, home to the famous wildebeest migration. Your home is Olakira Camp, a luxury mobile camp, moving with the seasons, forever following the herds to ensure you have front row seats for one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

A flight from Ndutu Airstrip takes you to Rubondo Island National Park where you will be staying at Rubondo Island Camp. At Rubondo you can walk through wild chimpanzee territory with the camp’s expert guides and meet chimpanzee researchers. There are also daily hikes, fishing trips, canoeing adventures and dhow sailing trips to enjoy at your own leisure.

After three nights at Rubondo you will travel to Rwanda where you will be staying at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge nestled in the Virunga mountain range. This lodge will be your base from where you will track gorillas – if you are lucky you may be able to spend an hour with these magnificent creatures.

“We were particularly keen to witness the migration of the wildebeest across the Mara River - and what we saw was like watching a BBC wildlife programme - just what we hoped for, and more. Truly amazing. The staff at the camp were first rate, especially our guide, Baraka. The food produced by the chefs was incredibly good. We slept soundly, even with wildebeest chomping grass right outside our tent. Our three night stay was a wonderful experience in every way.”

TripAdvisor review written by “Elaine H” who stayed at Olakira Camp in July 2014.

NATIONAL PARKS

These two parks, located between the world famous Serengeti National Park and equally game rich, Tarangire National Park, are a convenient inclusion in a Northern Circuit safari.

Ngorongoro Crater

The view from the rim of the crater looking down is one which will certainly impress visitors, but it is the dense game viewing in the crater itself which generally surprises guests. Large numbers of resident lion reside in the crater, as do the other four of ‘the big 5’. Game viewing is fantastic in the crater year round. Interestingly enough, there are no giraffe in the actual crater itself – this is a good question to pose to your guide when you visit!

Lake Manyara National Park

The shallow lake and its environs are home to herbivores such as hippos, impalas, elephants, wildebeests, buffalo, warthogs and giraffes. Giant fig trees and mahogany seen in the groundwater forest immediately around the park gates draw nourishment from the underground springs replenished continuously from crater highlands directly above the Manyara basin. Leading away from the forest to the fringes of Lake Manyara are the flood plains.

To the south are visible the acacia woodlands. Leopards, although in abundance, are tricky, but not impossible, to get a glimpse of due to the dense foliage, just like the other elusive carnivores – the renowned ‘tree-climbing lions’ of this park.

NATIONAL PARKSSOUTHERN SERENGETI AND NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA (NCA)

The area is part of the Serengeti ecosystem and, to the north-west, it adjoins the Serengeti National Park and is contiguous with the southern Serengeti plains. These plains (Southern Serengeti and south-western sections of the NCA) during February are home to the wildebeest of the Great Migration, and here they spend their time grazing and giving birth to approximately 500,000 calves within a 2 to 3 week period: a remarkably synchronized event.

Few calves are born ahead of time and of these, hardly any will survive when mixed with older calves from earlier in the previous year, and so are easier preys.

Southern NCA

The annual ‘Great Migration’ passes through the NCA each year with wildebeest and zebra usually moving south into the area in about December and moving back north in about June. They do not, however, enter the Ngorongoro Crater itself. This movement changes seasonally with the rains, but the migration will traverse almost the entire plains in search of food. The NCA has a healthy resident population of most species of wildlife: in particular, the Ndutu Lake area to the west has strong cheetah and lion populations. Game viewing here can be very rewarding – especially for rarer sightings such as the African Wild Dog.

NATIONAL PARKSRUBONDO ISLAND NATIONAL PARK

Rubondo Island National Park is the largest island national park in all of Africa, and lies within Tanzanian waters of Lake Victoria. It has been all but uninhabited for much of the last 50 years and is a truly wild frontier.

The landscape and vegetation is incredibly dense, and can be described as an equatorial rainforest, with trees, flowers and more that are typically not found anywhere else in Northern Tanzania.

The island is located near the large Tanzanian city of Mwanza, and is a convenient stop-over for those trekking gorillas in either Uganda or Rwanda, and the Northern Circuit in Tanzania.

Wildlife on the island has also been relatively undisturbed in the past 50 years, and they too are truly wild!

The island is home to around 50 chimpanzees who were previously all rescued from various European zoos and circuses and released back into the wild in the mid-1960s. The animals had no rehabilitation or pre-release training but after one year on Rubondo they were able to find and eat wild foods and construct nests for sleeping. This was the first ever attempt to rehabilitate captive chimpanzees.

In addition to chimpanzees, seven other species were introduced to the island: Roan antelope and rhinoceros, both now extinct, Suni antelope, elephant, giraffe, black-and-white colobus monkeys and African grey parrots confiscated from illegal trade.

The island abounds in bird species, as hundreds of species reside here either year round, or during their migration south from Europe for a few months each year.

The waters of Lake Victoria are also protected and are home to a variety of fish species, including the mighty Nile perch, which has been caught weighing up to 105kgs (230lbs)

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Located around 2.5 hours drive away from Arusha, and conveniently nearby to Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area - Gibb’s Farm is the perfect stop-over for any Northern Circuit safari.

Gibb’s is still a working coffee farm and has been for well over 80 years. Guests can explore the farm, the beautiful, expansive gardens or the nearby area with guided walks. Or enjoy the original artwork in the Zawadi Boutique which is located on the property.

Relax in one of the nooks and crannies with a cup of tea, enjoy the original artwork or sip wine by one of the roaring fires to unwind. Just outside the farmhouse.

Offering 17 gorgeously decorated guest cottages featuring a unique theme, they are all richly appointed with eucalyptus floors, hand-crafted furniture, two queen-size beds, open fireplaces and a verandah. Furthermore, there are beautiful outdoor showers (in addition to those inside - much more suited for those chilly mornings!) that lead to Gibb’s being a rustic, yet luxurious getaway in the Tanzanian countryside.

The dining on offer at Gibb’s is also a treat – with hearty, country dishes, largely made using produce from the farm itself.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

The small and exclusive camp has been constructed using local materials to blend in with the island’s natural vegetation. The 8 luxury cottages sit in the shade of the forest canopy, just 60 metres from the lake shore so at night you can hear the waves lapping against the beach. The main mess area is open on 3 sides to give 280 degree views of the lake and the natural rocks which the building stands on have been incorporated so that you feel nature is all around you.

The camp, set on Rubondo Island, offers a wide range of activities so that you can explore the island by foot, in a safari vehicle or venture out onto the lake. Trek through wild chimpanzee territory with knowledgeable guides, enjoy a game drive or set sail on the camp’s traditional dhow for a sunset cruise. In addition to this, guests can fish the protected areas of Lake Victoria (on a catch and release basis), where the mighty Nile perch reign supreme and have been caught weighing up to 105kgs!

For those looking for a little more relaxation, the camp is the perfect location to while away time, lying by the pool overlooking Lake Victoria or enjoying a massage in the privacy of your room.
