Working in war and violence places Working in countries at war means, to look every day with a different perspective to what we do when we work in our places of origin. It is true that the achievements have direct relation with the professional experience and studies, in these types of contexts these are not enough, we must also consider the adaptation to the new place as well as acceptance. About my missions Most of my missions, I have done in Asia, and for the communication with the local staff it assign me an interpreter. EWH with the support of Duke University NC USA send yearly BME students to developing countries to support some hospitals. During 2012 summer vacations, I conducted the BME training course in Tanzania for 24 USA and Europe students.

IMC is an NGO based in Santa Monica CA USA. I was in charge of the project at Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital in Kabul. In that mission, I was in charge of all maintenance, not just for biomedical issues. The priority was the training of local technical staff.

• ICRC • Kandahar Afghanistan-Mirwais Hospital, where I am currently performing my 7th mission, is the largest ICRC hospital project. On my arrival in December 2012, there was no biomedical equipment maintenance area. Here, too, the priority was the training course for local staff, which took two years, finishing on December 2014. Now, the biomedical technicians are in charge of most of the equipments, under my supervision.

• Tegucigalpa Honduras-Hospital Escuela Universitario project started in

2017, due to the growing wave of violence; in this stage, ICRC is supporting only the emergency ward. The difference with other project is that here, there is BME department with strong knowledge, so, the support is with new equipments and spare parts.

• San Salvador El Salvador, this project has not yet been implemented, I have only done assessment in three hospitals, and in the next step we will select only one hospital. Security In our countries, when we design hospital maintenance plans, we take into account many possible variables in order to achieve our goals, but in contexts of war or armed conflict, the issue of security is a priority and everything else is coming later. Contribution ICRC continues to support despite the attacks received, hospital projects continue, as we know that, these are the only options for people living in areas of war and conflict. Achievements Despite all the obstacles encountered, we are achieving the objectives set, and these are fundamentally oriented to the training of technical personnel to achieve sustainability. Conclusions Everything I have learned throughout my professional life as a biomedical engineer, I am very useful in critical and difficult contexts like these.
