George Felker, doing what he loves most – welding to help others!



George Felker is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He is one of those hard working men who have helped to shape the backbone of our country. For 36 years he worked in the construction and welding business and he is proud to have built bridges all across America. Retiring after many years of hard work, he was diagnosed with cancer. Radiation Medicine treatments were critical to his recovery. He still welds but not for money - just for the sheer pleasure of helping his neighboring farmers and he does it well. His motto is “life is about what you can give, not what you can get” and his smile is contagious.

How does this work? Radiation is produced by a Linear Accelerator, or LINAC. It employs microwave energy to accelerate electrons to nearly the speed of light within a contained area. The electrons collide with a metal barrier, creating powerful X-rays called photons. The photons are shaped into beams and delivered to the patient through a gantry that moves 360 degrees around the treatment table. With the UPGRADES, Radiation Oncologists can use image guided radiation therapy, which combines sophisticated computer programs to more precisely conform the radiation to the tumor’s 3D shape which is crucial for limiting damage to surrounding tissue.

Three major components of upgrade which enhance and ensure

higher quality imaging and treatment

“On Board Imaging” (OBI) -Higher quality images that allow your therapy team to spot anatomical differences and make adjustments before every treatment Cone Beam CT Scanner (DBCT) -This equipment takes a 3D image of tumor before the start of each treatment to ensure patients are precisely and correctly positioned before each treatment Rapid Arc (VMAT) -A type of IMRT (intensity modulated arc therapy) that can deliver beams 2-8 times faster than before the machine upgrade
