ver the past century, Milford Regional has grown from a

The Milford Rotary has just completed another great year of working together to help promote and build a bet-

ter community while working with Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation to

improve the quality of life throughout the world.

The Milford Rotary Club, chartered in 1937, is part of the worldwide humanitarian

service organization that includes over 33,000 clubs and over 1 million members.

Thanks to your support of our fundraisers, such as this Tab you are reading and our

annual spring Wine/Micro-Beer and Food Tasting we are able to support a wide vari-

ety of community programs as well as assist in international projects around the globe.

The following is just a sample of what we do.

The Rotary Summer Red Cross Swim Program has helped 11,329 kids learn to swim

since the program began 61 years ago at White's Beach in Mendon.

Every year the club awards four or five $1,000 scholarships to area high school seniors

who embrace the spirit of "Service Above Self".

In the spring we select and fund 5 to 7 sophomore delegates to the Rotary Youth

Leadership Academy (RYLA) at Worcester State College. Delegates to RYLA learn to

improve upon their leadership skills while gaining friendships of like-minded youth from across the state.

Thanks to the kindness of many businesses in the local area, we host the entire Hopedale High School junior

class for "Career Day" in October. Students shadow business people for the morning and then join Rotarians

for lunch at Restaurant 45 in Medway.

Rotary is also an avid supporter of the Milford Youth Center and donated the scoreboard in the gym.

This year the club was honored to sponsor two Rotary Youth Foreign Exchange Students-one to France and

one to Spain- and we are excited about hosting Luis Saa from Chile for the 2011-2012 school year. Luis is our

first ever-inbound exchange student and will be attending Milford High School.

Our members are also strong supporters of the Rotary International Foundation and its goal of making the

world a better, more peaceful, place to live. One of the Foundation's major goals is to create a Polio Free World.

The Milford Rotary Club is proud to be one of the leading clubs in District 7910 in donations per member to

the Rotary International Foundation. This year we were also awarded the Presidential Citation as one of the

top clubs in the District 7910.

We hope that by glancing through this publication, you will get a true insight into the scope of Rotary's pro-

jects, both within the community and beyond. We hope this publication also helps you capture the spirit of fel-

lowship and fun that we enjoy at our weekly meetings.

Salvation Army extends a big thank you. Lt. Carnith and Lt. Krystal Boring attended this year's annual joint meet-ing of the Milford Rotary and Lions . During the meeting the commanders commended the clubs for their years ofcommitment to the Corps’ bell ringing program. Milford Rotary Helping Milford Youth Center To Keep Score

Thanks to the successful fundraisers that the Milford Rotary Club conducts each year, the club was able to make the leading gift to help the Milford YouthCenter install a new electronic scoreboard. Everyone at the Center seemed real excited about the scoreboard and felt that it should make basketball a lot moreinteresting. The project was the Club's signature community project for the 2010-2011 Rotary Year.

MYC Director, Jim Sanchioni told Rotary that the " new scoreboard was a wonderful addition and will allow the Center to expand activities and give kids amuch more realistic live game experience".

Jim noted "the MYC has become the focal point for many children in Milford who depend on the MYC to provide them with the necessary activities andopportunities to help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally throughout their childhood and teenage years".

"For a majority of the kids, the MYC is a veryimportant part of their life'' Jim said. Rotary washappy to support the MYC kids and their activi-ties.

Milford Rotary Awards $1000 to GEMINI......a Collaborative Rotary International Service Project with a Mission to improve the quality ofEmergency Medicine in developing countries by providing resources, inspiration, training,medical supplies and equipment. GEMINI has undertaken projects in Armenia, the DominicanRepublic, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras and Nicaragua. All Rotarians involved in the projectpay their own expenses and use Foundation grants to cover the cost of sending area doctors tothe participating countries. Trains rolling toward Hopedale and Milford: Event chair Al Holman(right) invited Jon Delli Priscoli, Chief Executive Officer and 100% pri-vate owner of the Railroad, to update the club on the status of his inno-vative project. When completed, the rail will be 16 miles long and actmuch like a linear industrial park bringing new commerce and newemployment opportunities to the Blackstone Valley. Trains will rununder-10 MPH to avoid "Harmonic Roll" but the track is being built fora max of 25 mph. Jon also noted that the RR owns 42 feet or more oneach side of the center of the tracks. That created an interesting Q & A.Awesome program. We learned a lot about RR rights and obligations.Oh yes- we also talked about solutions for the Draper Mill Complex.Rotarians enjoy a variety of wonderful programs every week.

The Milford Rotary Club is dedicated to the ideals of Rotary which are to encourage and foster high standards in business and pro-fessionals, commitment to the local community, and the advancement of international standing, goodwill and peace

Meetings are held every Tuesday at 12:10 p.m. at Restaurant 45 in Medway. Rotary was founded in 1905 by a Chicago business-man by the name of Paul Harris. In 1916 the president of Rotary International challenged Rotarians to create an endowment fund forthe purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational and other avenues of community service. The fund became knownas “The Rotary Foundation.” Following the death of Paul Harris in 1945, the Foundation was renamed the Paul Harris Foundation.

Individuals who contribute $1000 or more are recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Individuals contributing toward that goal are rec-ognized as Sustaining Members.

Twenty-one Milford Rotary Club members are Paul Harris Fellows, signified by the * before their name. Every October the Milford Rotary Club celebrates VocationalServices Month by inviting members of the Hopedale HighSchool Junior Class to participate in its Career Day program. Inresponse to that outreach program, seventy-four juniors fromHopedale High School spent a morning in late October withlocal businesses to observe and learn about their career interests.This year's program was organized and chaired by Rotary'simmediate-past president Josh Lioce.

Following the morning visit with their career hosts, the stu-dents were guests of the Rotary Club at Restaurant 45 inMedway where several students spoke about their morningexperience.

Rotary would like to thank all Hopedale High School admin-istrators for making this event possible and extends a "specialthanks" to the wonderful business owners and managers whomake time in their busy schedules to host the students. Withoutyour assistance, Rotary would not be able to offer this importantprogram.

The Milford Rotary Club isexcited about hosting its first-ever Rotary InternationalESSEX [Eastern StatesStudent Exchange] exchangestudent for the 2011-2012school year. Luis Saa comesto us from a rural communitynear Santiago, Chile, and hasenrolled at Milford HighSchool as a senior. Luis is

sponsored by the Talagante Rotary Club in District4340 in Chile.

Luis arrived in the United States at Logan Airportduring Labor Day weekend in September. His firsthost family, Jeanne and George Reimonn and theirthree sons, lives in Hopkinton and were on hand towelcome him to the US and his new home for thenext three months. After that, Luis will stay with twoother area families for 3-4 months each.

Luis is excited about coming to the US and is eagerto improve his English skills as well as learn aboutAmerican culture. While in Chile, Luis played guitar,bass and drums with his friends in a small band andwas active in Boy Scouts there. He'll continue thoseinterests during his visit here and has become a mem-ber of the MHS Cross Country Team.

Rotary Club members will be including Luis in theirown family travels to Boston and other New Englandsites as well as Rotary events throughout the year.One Rotarian has already planned to have Luis joinhim and his grandson at a Revolution soccer game atGillette Stadium in Foxboro in October. Luis will alsoattend events with other Rotary exchange studentsstudying in Massachusetts this year.

Rotary has rolled out the "red carpet" to welcomeLuis to the Milford area and knows that we will learnfrom Luis just as much or more than he will about lifein the US from us and his host families. Buildinginternational understanding and friendships is amajor goal of Rotary International and the MilfordClub is proud to be part of that this year.

Exchange Students Seek Cultural Experience

Tom Reimonn Enjoyed Year In SpainOn August 30, 2010, I boarded a plane by myself heading to a suburb of Madrid, Spain so I could spend the nextyear as an exchange student during my junior year of high school. The next ten months proved to be some of the

best of my life as I learned to speak fluent Spanish, had the chanceto travel around Europe, joined a Spanish water polo team, andmade a host of great friends. The family with whom I lived wasmore than happy to explain Spanish culture, and they gave me agreat insight into the mindset of the Spanish. Pushing myself to tryeverything, I learned to make la tortilla de patatas and paella, themost typical dishes of Spain. The best part, however, were all thepeople I could meet: not just the Spanish families, but also the otherforeign exchange students, my peers in the local high school, andthe other people in the town. Having returned to the US, I realizejust how much I learned. To anyone who wants to see a new per-spective and lifestyle I would completely recommend an exchange.Anytime is a great time: high school, college, retirement. Learn anew culture and way of life, make friends, and eat great food.

Julie Demers Returns Home From France A year living in a foreign country, surrounded by new and interesting people. Perfecting a new language during the week

and traveling throughout Europe on weekends and Holidays. Without a single dull moment, how much better could life get?"Had this been a dream?" No, in fact I had been one of thousands of Rotary Youth Exchange Students around the world, enjoy-

ing life in a brand new way. “You are bound to run into a cou-ple of difficulties when you are spending a year without see-ing your family, are in a new school in a foreign country, andliving with a new family.” However you can rest assured, itwas the best year of my life.

I was the only American student in a normal French Highschool. I improved in the language and made amazingfriends, who taught me so much about the French culture, life,and people in general. Meeting new people was one of thehighlights of my trip, and thanks to Rotary not only did I learnabout France, I was taught about places around the world!Rotary gave me the opportunity to make friends withexchange students from places I had only dreamed of going;Russia, Argentina, Sweden, South Korea, and the list goes on.With all the people I met we shared incredible moments, andadmired that although we had barely anything in common,we could still be such close friends. My year in France changedme for the better and inspired me to always learn and admire

people and places for their differences and to leave stereotypes and prejudgments aside, all the while having the most enjoy-able voyage and adventure. Deepest regards, thank you for everything Milford Rotary!

Rotary Awards $4000 in Scholarships. Rotarian Steve Ellis gave an eloquent andthoughtful speech during this year's scholarship award ceremony. He presented a briefoverview of the selection process and praised the quality of the applicants based on thewide variety of their outstanding achievements.
