Foundation students went to Heide Gallery in Heidelberg as part of their inquiry into how inspiration can come from many sources and can be shared in different ways. Year 4 students had a wonderful time at Werribee Zoo as they looked at the components of the ecosystem and how ecosystems can vary in different parts of the world. Storytime Last Friday, we held our first Storytime session in the Library. Many of the kinder children who will be coming to Milgate in 2018 will be attending one of the Storytime sessions on a Friday afternoon over the coming weeks. During the first session, the children enjoyed reading ‘Ruby and Leonard and the Great Big Surprise’ and ‘The Very Hungry Dinosaur’ before creating their own cupcake pictures. The sessions are run by Karen Jensen, our Library technician and assisted by Year 5 students and a Foundation teacher. This is part of the transition program to familiarise the children with school before they start next year. School Review | Parent Survey A survey has been developed to gain feedback around student learning and future planning as part of our school review. A Compass post with a link to the survey will be sent out early next week and we kindly ask that a member from each family take some time to be involved in this process. Code Club Moonhack

On Tuesday Stevaan Ronith Amy Olivia and Ajay from Milgatersquos Code Club attended a coding event in the city called lsquoMoonhackrsquo Moonhack aims to get kids coding and break a world record each year for the most students coding in a day This year they achieved that record with over 25000 children coding Channel 7rsquos morning show lsquoSunrisersquo filmed Milgate students completing the Moonhack task using the program lsquoScratchrsquo Click on the following link to watch the clip httpsautvyahoocomsunrisevideowatch3673087725-000-break-the-record-for-mass-codingpage1

Well done to the students that attended and all those at Milgatersquos Code Club who completed Moonhack

Messages

Using social media Apps such as Messages can be a useful tool for communicating with classmates when working collaboratively on Homework tasks However the App can also become very distracting for students Group messaging where more than two students are chatting within the same message can lead to continuous notifications This can impact on your childrsquos ability to lsquoSwitch offrsquo when at home and their ability to interact with family members We have had instances of whole classes being involved in group chats which has led to hundreds of messages late into the evening We have spoken to several classes about the impact of group messaging on families and we would encourage families to have a conversation around the use of Messages and suggest limiting the use of group messaging

If you would like to discuss this further or would like support with setting restrictions on your childrsquos iPad please feel free to email me at manderdavidjedumailvicgovau
