The Milgis Trust was born on a remote hill* * I N T HE DE P T H S O F N O R T HE R N K E NY A O V E R F I V E Y E A RS A G O A N D IS A T R UE G RA S S R OO TS C O N S E RV A TI O N O R GA NIS A T I O N.

Set up in order to provide security to the people,

wildlife and habitats of this ecosystem the Trust exists

to address the many threats facing its future before it

is too late.

Named after the mighty Milgis Lugga; a huge seasonal

river that winds its way between the Matthews Range

and Ndoto Mountains, the Trust protects nearly

8,000sq km of fiercely beautiful land from semi-arid

desert, dramatic mountains to awesome luggas.

Working in a land that has not been touched by modern

civilisation the Trust works gently with the ancient Tribes

of the Samburu and Rendille people and respects their

culture and tribal beliefs whilst working with them in

protecting their fragile ecosystem.

The Trust needs your support to be truly sustainable

and provide the security needed not only for the people

but for the beautiful, rare and endangered wildlife that

lives in the Milgis ecosystem.

conserving the wildlife, habitat and the pastoral people’s way of life8.

ALL OF OUR PROJECTS ARE FORMED TO REBALANCE THIS FRAGILE ECOSYSTEM WHILST IMPROVING LIVELIHOODS AND PRESERVING A RICH CULTURE AND OUTSTANDING ENVIRONMENT.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The Milgis Trust believes conservation begins at the

heart...

Any real solution has to begin with a change in attitude...

A fundamentally different view of our status in the world

not as a dominant consumer...

But an interdependent partner with all aspects of the

ecosystem.

CURRENT SITUATION

The Samburu and the Rendille people have lived in

harmony with nature for many hundreds of years.

However, with the rapid increase in population and

subsequently in the numbers of livestock, the demand

for natural resources has understandably grown at the

same rate.

This beautiful land is no longer sustainable and the

people, wildlife and their habitats are suffering.

CORE OPERATIONS

There are five distinct areas to our core operations:

1. The Milgis Trust Radio Hill; this is where our two radio

operators live and work manning the radio waves and

coordinating activities.

4. Awareness meetings & Campaigns; the Trust holds several

monthly and quarterly meetings with the Scouts, the Community

Conservation Committee as well as regularly integrating the

surrounding communities by holding village meetings.

5. Contingency Operations; every day the Trust receives emergency

calls and visitors; be it for illness, wildlife emergencies, poaching,

deforestation or fires. We always need to have the resources

available to be able to deal with the situation quickly and effectively.

2. Our 22 Scouts and local Manager; each of

whom works full time in their allocated

conservation range equipped with radio,

GPS and binoculars; patrolling on foot, they

create monthly records and reports on

communities, livestock, wildlife and land

degradation, whilst actively promoting and

conserving the areas they patrol.

3. Project Coordination; the Trust always has

a conservation project on the go and heavily

relies on the team at the headquarters to

manage and coordinate all activities on site.

WISH LIST The Milgis Trust would be thrilled to accept

any item donations, be they second-hand or

new; and are always grateful for any funding

assistance for core operations and the

numerous conservation projects needing

support.

Our top wish is for funders to discover this

amazing land themselves by enjoying a

philanthropic safari
