1. SCOPE

3 . D E F I N I T I O N S

3.1 GENERAL DEFINITIONS. Definitions ofStandard MIL-STD-105 are applicable.

3.2 SPECIFIC DEFINITIONS. For the pur-pose of this standard the applicable definitionsincluded in Standard MIL-STD-177 and theDefinitions stated below shall apply. Where adefinition is covered in both Standard MIL-STD-177 and below, and are different, the definitionsgiven below shall govern.

3.2.1 Critical area. The critical areas consistof the upper, the sole, the heel, and the innerstructure.

3.2.2 Uncritical area. The uncritical areasconsist of the top binding and the reinforcingparts.

3.2.3 Allowable dimensions of dejects. In de-termining “over” or “under” for the type of de-fect, the largest dimension in any direction gov-erns.

3.2.4 Blister. Any soft area that presents anirregular surface or protuberance without a breakon the surface.

3.2.5 Crease. A crease is a fold mark, like apleat, where surfaces are not stuck together.

3.2.6 Marred stock. Marred stock is imper-fect surface stock caused when the uncured rub-ber struck or touched nonrubber objects or wasotherwise injured during processing.

3.2.7 Pit. A pit is a small open void in thesurface of the rubber.

3.2.8 Wrinkle. A wrinkle is a furrow or foldin the surface which may be stuck together.

3.2.9 Bloom. A bloom is material migratingto the surface to form a blush or discoloration.

3.2.10 Burned gum. Burned gum is rubberthat has been carbonized or deteriorated result-ing from excessive heat or corrosive chemicals.

3.2.11 Front stay. The front stay is the stripwhich is placed along the front of the rubberfootwear to provide reinforcement and to helpanchor the buckles.

3.2.12 Chafing strip. A chafing strip is a tex-tile strip placed in insulated boots for purposesof comfort and reinforcement.

3.2.13 Foxing. Foxing is a ribbon of rubberwhich encircles the lower outer edge of rubberfootwear.

3.2.14 Pocket. A pocket is the cavity in thetongue area or tongue-bellows area of the boot,extending the length of the eyelets or fasteners.

3.2.15 Ski-shelf. The ski-shelf is a small sec-tion of rubber attached above the outside at theheel and toe sections of the insulated boot.

3.2.16 Vamp. The vamp is the top forepartof footwear which covers the front part of thefoot .

3.2.17 Pressed stock. Parts having a raiseddesign or embossing which has been flattened dueto pressure from stacking.
