Tuition Assistance (TA)

• Tuition paid for institutions with a signed DoD MoU up to…• $3,750 per fiscal year (1 Oct – 30 Sept)• $250 per semester hour (sh) or $166 per quarter hour (qh) maximum• fees and books are NOT covered by TA

• TA credit hour caps• undergraduate – up to 124sh/186qh• graduate – up to 42sh/63qh

• includes undergraduate pre-requisites on an evaluated degree plan

• Supports off-duty, part-time attendance• excess of part-time will result in personal financial obligation

• Must be on active duty for entire length of course• Officers must have a DOS 2yrs or more after the end date of the course and incur a

2yr ADSC when using TA

• term date not available? you may be too early or late! Do not select the next available term date!! Call the education office if you are unsure.

Grades

GPA requirements• undergraduate: 2.0 GPA after completion of 15sh• graduate: 3.0 after completion of 6sh

Note: GPA is calculated using all TA funded courses regardless of reimbursement actions

Final grades• must be posted in AFVEC within 60 days of course end date• grade notification emails sent from AFPC– pay attention to suspense date to

avoid reimbursement of TA• once reimbursement starts, it will not be stopped or deferred

• allow the school 30 days after the class ends to update grades in AFVEC before submitting grades to the education office

Incomplete grades• must attain a satisfactory grade with-in the time limit stipulated by the college or

120 calendar days from the end date of the course, whichever comes first• not eligible for additional TA until the incomplete is resolved• reimbursement begins if a satisfactory grade is not received by the 120 day deadline• grade submitted after 120 days - no refund

Reimbursement of TA

• Grades of …• “D” or below for undergraduate • “C” or below graduate

• Grade of “W”• withdrawing from a course may require a portion or 100% of tuition be repaid• check your school’s policy, consult your student handbook, or speak with your

school advisor• consult with the Education Office prior to dropping or withdrawing from a class

• AFPC will send reimbursement notification emails – pay attention to suspense date – 30 days to respond

• contact your school to address & update any grade discrepancies before the suspense date

• DD FORM 139 processed on the 31st day to initiate deduction of reimbursement from military pay

• After reimbursement, TA may be used to repeat the course once

Waivers for Course Withdrawals

Circumstances must clearly show the events were beyond your control and you have first asked for an exception to policy from the school.

• Circumstances that may be considered…• short notice PCS/TDY where you had no prior knowledge• unexpected hospitalization• emergency leave

• Waivers will not be considered if using TA…• in an AEF cycle, while deployed or in the zone for PME attendance• during scheduled medical procedures or planned leave• while taking multiple courses• while awaiting commissioning program

• Supporting documentation and a signed letter by your commander/first sergeant must be submitted in PDF format

• No waivers for unsatisfactory grades

TA process

1. In AFVEC – update contact & supervisor information; complete Virtual MILTA Benefits Training.

2. Submit copies of all previous college transcripts to the education office.3. Complete one of the following career/interest inventories for initial goal approval or change of

goal (exception: CCAF education goal).

4. Email the results of your assessment to the education office.

5. Search for a college. a) Factors to consider: accreditation; costs; course format (classroom, online, or

blended/hybrid); length of term; credit transfer policy

6. Contact college representative to complete admissions.7. In AFVEC, create an Education Goal and load degree plan.

EXCEPTION: CCAF goal does not require a degree plan or school selection

8. Meet with college advisor to select courses.

9. In AFVEC, Apply for Funding.Ensure TA request has CORRECT college, start/end dates, course code, course title, credit hours, tuition cost, etc

10. Register for course with college after TA is approved.When you register for a course, you are obligated to pay for it. If you do not request TA before you register or on time, you will have to self-pay for the course.

11. Attend class and ensure grades are submitted in AFVEC within 60 days of course end date.

12. Repeat steps 7-11 each term you wish to use TA.13. Submit your official evaluated degree plan to the education office after your first two classes to

continue receiving TA – send via email to [email protected].

Applying college credit to CCAF

Send previous college transcripts as well as transcripts for courses funded by TA to CCAF for evaluation.

VA Education Benefits

MGIB – CH 30Eligibility, Benefits & Expiration

TUITION ASSISTANCE (TA) REQUIREMENTS Reference AFI 36-2670_AFGM2020-02 (29 SEP 2020)

READ and initial the following:

1. _____ Maximum TA allowed is $3,750 per FY (1 Oct-30 Sep); $250 per semester hour (sh) or $166.00 per quarter hour (qh);covers tuition ONLY; books, fees, etc. not included. TA credit hour cap for undergraduate is 124sh/186qh; graduate is 42 sh/63qh.

2. _____ TA supports off-duty, part-time attendance. Taking a course load in excess of part-time will result in a personal financialobligation.

3. _____ Contact information must remain current in AFVEC to include official & alternate email addresses, supervisor, phone #,education level, etc.

4. _____ All previous college transcripts must be submitted to the education office, an interest inventory completed and counselingreceived before my education goal will be approved (initial or change).

5. _____ An approved degree plan must be on file for the first two classes; thereafter, an official evaluated degree plan showing alltransfer credit and all courses required for the degree must be submitted to the education office.

6. _____ TA requests must be submitted in AFVEC 7-45 days before term start date and approved prior to term start date. Anapproved TA has been digitally signed by the member, supervisor and education office. If your supervisor does not sign the TAprior to the class start date, TA will auto delete and cannot be reissued for that term. Military member ensures TA request isaccurate and the college receives a copy of the AF Form 1227 (TA form).

7. _____ Any course or schedule change must be reported to the education office immediately.8. _____ TA will not fund courses towards a goal at a lower or lateral level to one already attained either before or after entering the

Service. (Exceptions: one civilian associate after CCAF degree completion or an initial/subsequent CCAF degree regardless ofprevious degree earned).

9. _____ TA cannot be used for repeated courses or course equivalents regardless of funding source; includes CLEP/DSST.10. _____ Two degree program/school changes are allowed; not allowed if 90sh/135qh completed towards undergraduate or

9sh/14qh completed towards graduate degree.11. _____ If GPA drops below 2.0 for undergraduate after completion of 15sh or 3.0 for graduate after completion of 6sh, TA will not

be authorized. Courses must be self- funded and transcripts provided to the education office for GPA review.12. _____ TA must be reimbursed for grades of D, F, or W undergraduate and for C, D, F or W graduate. TA will only pay for one

retake after reimbursement.13. _____ Waivers for a grade of “W” will only be considered after I have asked for an exception to policy from the college and only if

the circumstances clearly show the events were beyond my control (emergency leave, unexpected hospitalization, or short-noticePCS/TDY with no prior knowledge).

14. _____ Using TA when in an Air Expeditionary Force cycle, in the zone for PME attendance, during scheduled medicalprocedures, planned leave, awaiting commissioning program, etc., will not be sufficient reason for requesting a waiver if coursesare not successfully completed.

15. _____ Grades must be reported to the education office within 60 days of the course end date; additional TA may not be issued ifgrades are missing.

16. _____ Reg AF enlisted members must be on active duty for the entire length of the course. Reg AF Officers must have a DOS ordeactivation date that is 2 yrs or more after the end date of the course. Officers incur a two-year active duty service commitmentwhen using TA. Activated Guard/Reserve see AFI 36-2670_AFGM2020-02 (29 SEP 2020), 6.5.2.4.

17. _____ TA will be denied for AF members with a UIF, recent failed or overdue PT test, referral EPR/OPR or if on a control roster.No waivers.
