local art is everywhere, especially on the first two weekends of this month when dozens of Orange County artists open their studios up for the annual Orange County Artists Guild Tour.

If you haven’t spent an afternoon wheeling around in search of the treasures being created around you, this is a chance to do so amid the splendor of the fall. You don’t even have to venture out of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro metroplex, since there are roughly 34 studios within a cou-ple of miles. We suggest, however, that in addition to visits to those with studios around town, you gather up some friends and head into the countryside for a combination art and fall color tour. There’s great concern about the future of the Orange County countryside, driven most recently by moves to site an airport and a waste transfer station in the rural lands of the county. Those lands have long been under threat from sprawl, and much of the collective planning ef-forts of the county and towns has been aimed at preserving family farms and open spaces. Indeed, Orange County is one of those rare places where the number of farms is growing.

The countryside is also the home and the inspiration for hundreds of local artists as well, and mixed in with agricul-tural is a growing and thriving environment for artists.

Charlotte Hord Smith is one of those people who’s been inspired by what she takes in on her bicycle rides into the Dairyland region. Recently she took what she calls “the ice cream tour” — a trip from Carrboro out to Maple View Farms ice cream shop on the corner of Rocky Ridge and Dairyland Road and back. As she pedaled along, the vibrant colors and variations of fall color were so appealing that she began collecting leaf samples and, upon her return, commenced to arranging them on her scanner.

The result is the mélange on the cover of this month’s issue of MILL. It’s a reminder that local art is indeed everywhere if you just look for it.

Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. Whether you find that in the works of civilization or nature, there is no better time than now to get out and do some beholding. — Kirk Ross

The Joanna Dalldorf Fund for the Per-petuation of The ArtsCenter will double its contribution to $20,000 to provide scholarships and support operations. The fund, established in 2005 in memory of former board member Joanna Dalldorf, was set up to provide scholarships for children and adults as well as general support for the organization. Dalldorf was a pediatrician specializing in devel-opmental and handicapped pediatrics who believed the arts could especially benefit children.

To learn more or to contribute to the fund, please contact Jillian Holmquist, director of annual giving, at The ArtsCen-ter.

scuLpture dedIcated Artist Wayne Trapp’s sculpture “Wind

Whisper” was dedicated this week at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center on Homestead Road. The public art proj-ect is sponsored by the Orange County Arts Commission and the Friends of the Seymour Center.

Trapp, who is based in Vilas, N.C., cre-ated a kinetic piece powered by the wind. The shadows from the piece change with the seasons and the time of day.

The total project budget of $10,000 came from $5,000 allocated by the Orange County Board of Commissioners and $5,000 in matching funds from the Friends of the Seymour Center.

hoLIday craFt FaIrThe ArtsCenter is seeking local arti-

the Orange County Artists Guild Annual Open Studio Tour, now in year number 14, takes place this weekend and next (Nov. 1-2 and 9-10), from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Seventy-two artists — painters, sculptors, illustrators and others — open their doors to the public offering insights into their process-

es, lives and works. Visitors are welcome to purchase works, ask questions of the artists and draw inspiration for their own artistic endeavors.

The tour has been a hit with artsists as well art lovers.Warren Hicks, a painter from Chapel Hill, said he was pleasantly sur-

prised when he signed up for the tour four years ago.“[The tour] is usually pretty good for me,” he said. “Almost 200 people

came through last year.”The Orange County Artists Guild is a nonprofit organization made up of

artists working to promote local art. The Orange County Open Studio Tour and “Arts at the Meadow” are their two big annual activities.

The majority of studio tour sites are located in Carrboro and Chapel Hill, with others stretching through the county and into Hillsborough. Infor-mation, including a map and images of guild members’ works, is available online at orangecountyartistsguild.com

Some samples from the artists on this year’s tour include (clockwise from top) “Climbing Tree,” a drawing by Jean LeCluyse; “Life’s a Beach,” a painting by Linda Carmel; glazed stoneware by Judith Ernst; tiles by Heather Delisle and an oil painting by Carroll Lassiter.

MUSIC S P O T L I G H T S

projeCt SyMphony + LoSt In the treeSHill Hall will host a charity concert Saturday at 7 p.m. for the non-profit Project Symphony, which aims to support local

charities and budding classical composers alike. The first “Grande Concert,” features the Symphony No. 1 in C Minor writ-ten by composer and organization founder Ari Picker, of local bands Lost in the Trees and The Never.

Ticket sales will benefit Project Symphony and the charity Chatham County Together, which works to encourage “at risk” youth towards health, self-sufficiency and productivity.

Picker was helped by the program in his youth and views the concert as a way to give back. Picker was educated at the Berklee School of Music and has since spent a year writing the symphony. Performing the symphony is the 60-piece Project Symphony Orchestra.

Also performing at the concert are Lost in the Trees and Phil Cook of Megafaun. For tickets, visit projectsymphony.org

ornette CoLeManJazz great and Pulitzer Prize-winning record-

ing artist Ornette Coleman, a saxophonist and pioneer of the free jazz movement of the 1960s, will perform on Nov. 13 in Memorial Hall.

Coleman’s most recent album, “Sound Gram-mar,” received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Music and a Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance.

“Presenting Ornette Coleman this year is one of those small treasures we’re privileged to put our name on,” said Emil Kang, executive director for the arts at UNC. “He is hands down one of the greatest living jazz musicians, and his scope and influence are sure to shape the perceptions of musicians for generations to come.”

Coleman received a 2007 Lifetime Achieve-ment Grammy Award. The honor recognized his 50 years of recording albums including critical favorites “In All Languages” (1987), “Song X” (1985), “Free Jazz” (1960) and “The Shape of Jazz to Come” (1959).

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are available online at carolinaperformingarts.org, at the Memorial Hall Box Office. Tickets start at $30. Tickets for Carolina students with valid UNC One Cards are $10.
