MILLENNIAL NEEDS Who to Talk to – How to find the best people to help me? How to tap into my broader network? What to Say and How to Say It - How to be myself yet professional in my communications? What to Ask that’s most relevant to me and my contacts? How to have a high value conversation? How to Follow Up in ways that show I value my professional relationships? Get It Right on the First Try.“This is my one shot - I can’t blow it.” Can’t risk trial and error. Millennial Networking: Helping Today’s Students Build Professional Relationships Minnesota Career Conference, April 28, 2017 Millennials want to do work they love and are willing to change jobs until they find it. Recent studies show millennials are likely to upgrade their job faster than their phones, and they may have up to four jobs in the first 10 years of their careers. How do they get those jobs? By talking to people. 85 percent of jobs are found through people, not job posting. Today, referrals are twice as likely to get interviews and 40 percent more likely to be hired than general applicants. So for millennials, networking is the best route to opportunity, advancement, and a job they love. WHY NETWORKING MATTERS TO MILLENNIALS TODAY Without networking, a millennial competes with 250 others for every posted position, on average. She is spammed by recruiters for jobs she doesn’t want. And she is missing out on great jobs she doesn’t know exist. Today, having conversations with professionals in the vicinity of a desired job is the fastest, most effective way to find a job you actually want. Who to talk to? Other millennials! The most relevant advice and best referrals come from millennials, 2-5 years ahead on one’s same career path. Building relationships with recent alumni, friends-of-friend, former classmates is easier and more fruitful than with boomers and gen-Xers. “By making networking easier, We’ve made it harder.” Fake Taking Robotic Bothering Transactional For Extroverts Authentic Sharing Human, Personal Supporting Relationships For Everyone WHAT WORKS “Two-Steps Ahead” - Recommend connecting with recent alumni and friends-of-friends; they have the most to offer, are relatable, likely to respond, and don’t intimidate. Make It Worthwhile – People want to make a difference. Ask questions tailored to what they likely know and have to offer. Give students “Connection Types” to learn what advice to tap into (see next page). Giving First – Millennials crave reciprocity. Encourage students to give advice, make introductions and referrals for their friends’ friends and they’ll be more likely to reach out to new relationships for themselves. Reduce Guesswork – Millennials learn by doing, not reading (think “Turbotax”). Provide tools that coach them through the networking process and professional norms. AVOID “NETWORKING” PROMOTE “CONNECTING”
