Interest In Autonomous Vehicles = Growing Rapidly
What’s the Impact on Education? More Engineering and Business Degrees + Other Technical Credentials
• Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in engineering and businesswill remain in high demand due to growth and salary.
• More public-private partnerships– Uber + Carnegie Mellon, California + Google/Others, University of
Michigan + NAVYA
• New degrees in transportation planning and automation– Fields related to location analysis, sensors/signal processing, and
traffic planning
• New degrees or certificates could evolve around energy sources fueling our autonomous vehicles, especially electric
• Creation of certificates or badges to increase technical literacy in non-technical fields

Economic Landscape and Student Debt
Canada’s post-secondary enrollment has begun to stagnate in response to increasing student debt.
The US has seen a drop in post-secondary enrollment rates despite higher high school graduation rates. Climbing tuition costs and student debt likely contribute to the decrease. 4 year for-profit schools have taken the largest hit, followed by 2 year public schools.

Effects:
• For-profit colleges will benefit
• Tuition will likely rise
• Could lead to further drop in enrollment
• Further proliferation of alternative credentials?
How Else Could the Education Landscape Change? New Leadership in the US
Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education
• School privatization activist
• Favors less regulation of for-profit colleges
• Could change financial aid regulations if Higher Education Act is amended and reauthorized
Jerry Falwell Jr., President of Liberty University, leader of a presidential task force on education
• Aims to stop regulations from Education Department
• Curb rules under Title IX (bans discrimination in education), calls Title IX “over-regulation”

Big Data Programs meet Knowledge Blended with Labour Market Needs:
• Just in time, dynamic course content/curriculum updates: semi-semester, Program Advisory Committee regular meetings
• Curriculum building includes learner and graduates’ feedback
• Every job is tech related! Customised to reflect at-the-moment professional sector needs.
• Peer-to-peer learning, simulations
• Open enrollment is inclusionary: non-selective and non-competitive to break barriers in participation
• Assessment: open book, activity-based reflecting job environment
• Devaluing the myth “CBE is only for colleges – universities don’t do CBE!”
• Social protocols, soft skills & workplace culture entwined in learning

Academic standards were strong
I feel the program prepared me for various positions in the data analytics field
I would recommend this fast-track program to my family and friends
I have received value for the money spent on the course(s)
The program supported my career-related expectations
Learning in a fast-track program allowed me to acquire hands-on, applied dataanalytics skills
I received empathetic, adult learner-friendly support from the Program Director& Data Analytics Liaison

Open Enrollment comment: There are very few programs of this nature and it would have been difficult to cover these
topics on my own. Thisprogram gave me access to important material without
having to compete for a spot.
Student Support comment: A common obstacle for adult-education is that university-
bureaucracy is often in conflict with demanding-work
schedules. Director helps overcome this problem with her
persistent and innovative solutions. I would go as far as to
say that, due to the erratic demands of my workplace, I would not have been able to
complete the program without her.
Does it Work?
Yes: Setup costs moderately higher, but ROI significantly higher: additional student support options, course development and design, new technologies, refreshing course content for currency every term,
admin staff…
Result: High retention, High graduation rates & High Job Rates
