From The Principalʼs Desk
**REMINDER** One of our greatest responsibilities at Miller School is to keep students safe. We take this very seriously and it is the reason we practice fire drills, lockdowns and evacuation drills. We also make sure that all outside doors are locked during the day and ask that visitors stop at the office to get a pass before going to the classroom. The beginning and ending of the school day are both times when staff needs to be especially vigilant in supervising students. When children arrive to begin their day, get breakfast, and start work or pack up to begin the journey home and students are called to the office these can both be very hectic times in the classroom. To make sure that teachers can focus on student needs at these times we ask that adults remain at the office or front hallway and not go to classrooms. Beginning Tuesday, October 11 adults will no longer be allowed to walk children to class in the morning. If you are concerned that your child needs some extra attention at this time, please contact your child’s teacher or the office and we’ll arrange for a staff member to meet him/her at the front door and walk your child to class. This change is being made for safety reasons and to allow for the smooth transition of all students at the beginning and end of the school day. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 832-2103 or stop by the office. Thank you for helping to keep all students safe.

Reminder from The Health Office
School protocol requires any medications (prescription or ANY over-the-counter meds such as Tylenol, cough medicines, antibiotic ointments) that your child may need at school (and administered by school personnel) be brought in by an adult (handed from adult to adult) and requires that a medication administration form be in place at school with parent and physician signatures. This form can be picked up at school or it can be down-loaded from the RSU#40/MSAD#40 website-go to administration--school health services. Also, most physician offices are willing to fax an order for your child to the school if needed, but a parent signature is still required. The school fax number is 832-2101. Parents/ guardians are permitted to come and medicate their own children if needed without the permission forms. Remember to bring in meds in their original containers with your child's name on them. These safeguards are in place for the safety of all our children.
BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION It’s time to start bringing in your boxtops! Please remember to put you name on the back of the boxtops when you turn them in. Each week we will pick two box tops out of the BIG box in the office. The winners will be able to pick a prize from the Treasure Chest in the office.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR BOXTOP WINNERS...

your prize from the Treasure Chest!

LUNCH NEWS Starting on Monday, October 3, 2016, all full pay students in grades Pre-K to 8 who do not have any money on their accounts will receive what is called a "sub" meal for breakfast and lunch. For students in grades Pre-K to 3, a sub lunch consists of a peanut butter sandwich, fruit, vegetable, and a milk. They will be charged for a regular meal. For students in grades 4-8, a sub meal consists of a peanut butter sandwich and a milk. They will be charged $1.25. A sub breakfast for all grades (including Pre-K) will consist of a cereal and a milk. They will be charged .75. There is a cut off on how many sub meals a full pay student in grades 4-8 may receive. After 5 breakfast and/or lunch sub meals a student will no longer receive a meal at school. He or she will need to bring a meal from home. Parents or guardians will receive a call when a student has received 4 sub meals in a row and again when the 5th and final sub meal has been given. There is no charging or sub meals for students in grades 9-12. Please make sure your children have money on their accounts and please make sure your contact information is accurate. In addition, if you have an answering machine or voice mail, please make sure these devices are able to receive a message so that we may contact you concerning the sub meals. We do not want any child going hungry. If you owe money and would like to set up a payment arrangement, please contact the Food Service Director at 785-2277 ext. 241. Thanks!

Woodlot Management Series with Forester Mort Moesswilde What’s the Plan for my Woods? Forest Management Planning and Tree Growth Tax Laws This presentation will be in two sections. The Rirst hour we will talk about long-‐range forest management planning – understanding ownership goals assessing the forest, and deciding what to do. The second section will focus on Maine’s Tree Growth Tax Law – what it is, what it isn’t, and what it means for landowners. This class meets Tuesday, 10/4 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Location: MVHS. Fee: $14. How to Plan for a Successful Timber Harvest If timber harvesting is part of the long-‐range plan, how do you go about actually putting together a timber harvest? This session will talk about the steps landowners can take to prepare for a harvest and to make sure they get the results they want. We will discuss tree selection, types of harvests, access trails, equipment options, wood products, and communicating with foresters and loggers. This class meets Tuesday, 10/18, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Extending the Gardening Season with Sharon Turner Maine has a short growing season–traditionally four months, more or less. There are, however, many ways to lengthen that short season and have good wholesome food available through the fall, winter, and early spring. In this class we will explore everything from old-‐fashioned cold frames and hot caps to the latest in low and high tunnels and coverings. Seed starting, winter vegetable storage and fall garlic planting will be emphasized. Garlic will be available for purchase. A materials fee of $10 is payable to the instructor at the Rirst class. Begins Thursday, 10/6 – 10/20, 6:00 – 8:00 pm for 3 weeks. Location: MVHS. Fee: $30.
