The Foundation welcomed Shasta Mast and Molly Mohr to its Advisory Board in 2013. Mast is the Executive Director of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau and also brings with her years of experience regarding Holmes County and its people. “Connecting businesses with future employees is important to the economic health of our community,” Shasta stated. “I appreciate the opportunity to represent the Chamber on the Holmes County Education Foundation Advisory Board. Providing our community with key opportunities for further education

Mission:Holmes County Education Foundation strengthens our community by helping Holmes County residents pursue further education opportunities.

Vision:To be the community leader in providing our residents with need-based financial aid to pursue further education opportunities that lead to achieving degree attainment.

Values:Stewardship: We are accountable to internal and external stakeholders for the finances and operations of the organization, and, through prudent management of entrusted funds, we are committed to maintaining the high quality of our grant-making and services.

Sincerity: We respect our donors and carry out their wishes while maintaining the confidentiality of both the donors’ and grant recipients’ financial matters.

Community: We maintain an active concern for Holmes County residents, and within the Foundation’s means we are committed to meeting their educational needs for their own and the county’s long-term well-being.

Compassion: We are genuinely interested in bettering the lives of our students and our community.

Trust: We are committed to earning and maintaining the trust of the community by accurately reporting our activities and ensuring an open door policy.

Message from the Board of Trustees

Dear Friends,

We are proud to have served in the capacity of Trustees for the past year and pleased to present our 2013 Annual Report. Our investments were managed wisely and performed well. Our portfolio posted a 16.96% consolidated return.

The 5% commitment in annual award distributions was maintained as we awarded more than $346,000 in need-based scholarships to new and renewing students. Grant funding to sustain our college access program and advisor was depleted and not renewed. Despite the loss of our advisor, cur-rent staff did their best to accommodate the students with their questions about accessing college.

Six new scholarships were established with the Foundation. It’s an honor to be entrusted to administer these scholarship funds for these families.

Our Amish Vocational Training Program offered students the oppor-tunity to learn how to repair small engines and repair, overhaul and restore a 1948 Farmall H tractor. The class project tractor was donated to the Ohio Haiti Benefit Auction and sold for $3,900. Sadly, our lead vocational instruc-tor John Roberts passed away suddenly in October. John was instrumental in helping develop the program’s curriculum and presented twenty-six classes over the last fourteen years to more than 140 Amish students. His leadership and friendship has been greatly missed.

Two new community members were welcomed to the Foundation Advisory Board. The time, assistance and advice that these individuals devote to the Board of Trustees and staff are greatly appreciated as we strive for excellence within the Foundation.

Attorney Sam Steimel was honored as our 2013 Friend of Philanthro-py. We are extremely grateful to Sam for his generosity towards giving to this community.

Holmes County is very fortunate to have a Foundation that makes an impact on the lives of so many young people. Our sincere and grateful appre-ciation goes out to all who have generously supported the Holmes County Education Foundation. It is our hope that you will continue to support the mission of the Foundation by your generous giving and that you consider remembering the Foundation in your estate planning documents. Your continued support touches the lives of those in need of financial aid to further their education. Thank you for helping to make dreams a reality and for making this a stronger community.

With warm regards,

Linda L. Angelo Marcella K. Hawkins

New Scholarship Recipients, 2013The Holmes County Education Foundation is proud to have awarded $131,550** in scholarships to first-year recipients for the 2013-2014 academic year. An additional $215,700 was awarded to renewing scholarship recipients. Recipients still had an unmet need of over $485,000 despite receiving this assistance from the Foundation. Thanks to all Holmes County students who participated this year, the donors, community members, and educators who make the scholarships possible, and to the HCEF Trustees and committee for participating in the scholarship selection process.

The Marcia L. Stutzman Memorial Scholarship was established in 2013 by the employees of Rea & Associates, Inc. and The Rea Foundation. Marcia was a 1987 graduate of Hiland High School, where she was valedictorian. In 1992, she graduated cum laude with a double major in accounting and finance from Mount Union College. She was a 23-year employee and Principal with Rea & Associates. Marcia was also a member of Millersburg United Methodist Church, the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce, West Holmes Athletic Boosters, local and national CPA groups, and the Modern Mother’s Club. Marcia passed away in January 2013 at the age of 43 from Leiomyosarcoma.

Preference for the Stutzman Scholarship is given to graduating West Holmes High School seniors having financial need and pursuing the fields of accounting, finance or business administration in their higher educational pursuits. This year’s inaugural scholarship recipient is Courtney Kozak, who attends Ohio Dominican University and majors in accounting and finance.

The Robert & Della Ramseyer Scholarship was recently established by the children of the late couple, and will be awarded to Holmes County students demonstrating financial need and pursuing a degree in an agricultural or a medically-related field.

Robert Ramseyer was born in Switzerland and trained in the science and art of cheese-making. He came to America in 1929 and married Della Patterson from Holmesville in 1937. Della graduated from

Lakewood City Hospital Nursing School as a Registered Nurse and worked as a private duty nurse for many years. In 1941, Robert and Della organized the Holmes Cheese Company. The couple was married for 61 years. They were parents of four children and had 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Robert passed away in 1998 at age 90 and Della lived 100 years until her passing in early 2013.

In August, the Ralph B. and Alta M. Dickersheet Scholarship, established in 1976 and previously held with the Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston Law Firm in Millersburg, was entrusted to the Education Foundation. Ralph Dickersheet was born in 1897 and was a farmer all of his life. He married Alta Boyd, who was actively involved in the Berlin Garden Club. The couple were members of Faith Lutheran Church. Ralph passed away in 1977 and Alta in 1981. Though they never had children, the Dickersheets have carried a legacy by granting

well over $100,000 to over 200 graduating high school seniors since 1982 with their scholarship. The Dickersheet Scholarship is granted to students demonstrating financial need who are majoring in the fields of agriculture, home economics or business.

In November, the Rodhe Family Scholarship was established by Arlie and Evelyn (“Evie”) Rodhe, and will be awarded to Holmes County students in need who are pursuing a degree in business or music. Arlie and Evelyn are both graduates of Millersburg High School and have been residents of Holmes County most of their lives.

Arlie’s parents founded Rodhe’s IGA and he worked alongside both of them, while Evie was active in bookkeeping and various aspects of the business. Though now both retired, the Rodhes were very active in the Holmes County community. Arlie served as president of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce, and has served on various fundraising committees. Both have been involved with St. John’s Evangelical Covenant Church in Millersburg, singing in choir and serving on councils and committees.

The couple together have four married children and eleven grandchildren. Their sons Kurt and Scott now manage Rodhe’s IGA Market Place in Millersburg. Their daughter Sue lives near Chicago, and daughter Kay lives in Wooster. “[We established this scholarship because] we both believe it is very important for high school graduates to have a higher education,” Arlie stated. “These are the leaders of our communities, county, state and country.”

The Heinbuch Memorial Scholarship was established recently by The Heinbuch Memorial Fund, a component fund of the Wayne County Community Foundation. This scholarship, which will be funded on an annual basis to the Education Foundation, will be granted to Holmes County residents demonstrating financial need who are graduating seniors from West Holmes High School. John “Kelus” Heinbuch was born in 1924. He graduated from Clark High School in 1942 and married Ruth Wagers in 1947. In 1953 at age 29, John became paralyzed from a spinal infection and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He passed away in January 2010.

Ruth was born in 1925. During World War II, she worked in a factory making gasoline tanks for airplanes. After her husband became paralyzed, Ruth went to beauticians’ school in Columbus and worked for the Beauty Center in Wooster for 44 years. Ruth passed away in May 2012. Both John and Ruth were members of St. Johns Evangelical Congregational Church. John was an avid hunter and Ruth enjoyed reading. The couple had no children, but had many family members in the Holmes County community.

The Carol Hawkins Maurer Nursing Scholarship was established by family and friends of the late Carol Maurer. This scholarship was created to support further education of local students who have demonstrated financial need, academic merit, and who are pursuing the field of nursing. Preference is given to those attending Carol’s alma mater, Ashland University.

Carol received her RN degree from North Central State College and her BSN degree from Ashland University. She worked as an MDS nurse at Majora Lane Care Center and previously worked at Pomerene Memorial Hospital for 30 years, many of those years spent in the ER Department. She was instrumental in starting the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) program while at Pomerene. In 2002 she received the Holmes County Nurse of the Year award. Carol spent nearly 40 years in the nursing field. She was very passionate about education and was instrumental in guiding countless people into the medical field, especially nursing.

The Holmes County Education foundation currently administers over 40 named scholarships and has been encouraging further education for Holmes County residents by awarding well over $6 million in scholarships and grants since 1991. Additional contributions by donors

to these scholarship funds and all named scholarships held with the Education Foundation are welcome.

Saying Goodbye

Page 12 • Holmes County Education Foundation Annual Report 2013

It is with sadness that we said a final farewell to our friend and colleague John Roberts. John passed away in October 2013. He served as the lead vocational instructor for our Amish Vocational Training Program from the year 2000 until his passing. John was instru-mental in helping to develop the program’s curriculum and presented twenty-six classes over the years to more than 140 Amish students. The students ranged in age from 14-72. John taught the students skills in welding, repairing small engines and tractor engines, and also how to restore large antique tractors. John was especially proud of the 1948 Farmall H tractor that his class restored which was then auctioned off for $3,900 with the proceeds going to the Ohio Haiti Benefit Fund. John loved working with the Amish community and he loved sharing his passion for teaching vocational skills in an agricultural setting. His joyous soul will be missed.

Special thanks goes to John’s son, Phil Roberts, Jonas Mast, and John’s wife, Dona Roberts, for their rolesin helping us to complete the small engine class that was underway when John passed. Since the program began, more than $230,000 has been provided in scholarships to the Amish stu-dents.

ACT Turbo Workshop provides students with test taking tipsThe foundation held its 2nd annual ACT Turbo Workshop at the Wayne College Holmes Campus. Brian Stewart (Photo on left) of BWS Education Consulting served as instructor. This event helped prepare sixteen incoming juniors and seniors for the ACT test. Students practiced on sample questions and learned strategies for taking the test. Follow up reports indicated that students increased their test scores by 1 - 4 points after taking this workshop.

Amish Program Active with Two Classes in 2013. A large tractor/engine repair overhaul class was held in the spring at Steve Fender’s shop. Students prepped (Photo on right), primed and painted a 1948 Farmall H tractor. The class tractor project was donated to the Ohio Haiti Benefit Auction and sold for $3,900.

A small engines class was held at Jonas Mast’s shed. Eight students participated in this class and received a certificate of completion. Many thanks to Jonas Mast and Phil Roberts who served as instructors after the passing of lead instructor John Roberts.
