n Over 90% of Milligan students receive merit-based and/or need-basedfinancial assistance. In many cases, the assistance is substantial.

n Each year the college invests roughly $8 million of its annual budgetdirectly back into our students through institutional scholarships andgrants. This is one-third higher than most colleges and universities.

n Milligan’s published cost of attendance is more than $5,000 below thenational average for similar private institutions.

n Milligan is committed to keeping college affordable for our students. Our Student Financial Services (SFS) Office will work with youindividually every step of the way to help investigate all the optionsavailable for financing your education. We offer a full complement ofneed-based and merit-based scholarships, grants, and low-interestloans from federal, state, and institutional sources. We also have apayment plan that makes budgeting easier for you and your family.

GET AN ESTIMATE: VISIT www.fafsa4caster.ed.govIf you want to get an early start on the financial aid process,FAFSA4caster is for you. Note that this forecaster willindicate only your federal aid. You may also be eligible forstate aid (Tennessee residents) and institutional scholarshipsand aid from Milligan. Contact Milliganʼs SFS office with your results from the FAFSA4caster and we can give you an estimate of Milligan aid, too.

The basic financial aid equation:

COST ‑ EFC = NEED

STEP ONE: FAFSA

Why fill out a FAFSA?The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is thefirst step in the financial aid process. Use it to apply for federalstudent financial aid, such as the Pell Grant, federal studentloans, work-study, and the Tennessee Education LotteryScholarship (HOPE). Milligan College, like most colleges, usesthe results of the FAFSA to administer all federal, state, andneed-based institutional programs.

Why all the questions? Whatʼs an EFC?Your FAFSA responses are entered into a formula (known asthe Federal Methodology), which is regulated by theDepartment of Education (ED). The result is your ExpectedFamily Contribution, or EFC. The EFC is the figure that thegovernment estimates you and your family can contributetoward your college educational expenses.

How do I find out what my EFC is? The Central Processing Center of ED will send you a report, called a Student Aid Report (SAR), that includes your EFC.

n TIP: If you file the FAFSA online, you will receive the SAR withyour EFC about twice as fast as you would if you submit a paperform. The online FAFSA also has an error-checking function that willhelp you complete the form as accurately as possible.

How much aid do I get?The cost of attendance (COA) of a Milligan education is the fullcomprehensive fee (the total of tuition, room, board, andrequired fees). Your financial need is the difference between theMilligan cost (COA) and your EFC. Schools use your EFC toprepare a financial aid package (grants, loans, and/or work-study) to help you meet your financial need (although not allneed is always met).

When should I file the FAFSA?Submit the FAFSA by Feb 15 for priority consideration (formsare available beginning Jan 1). File online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.Be sure to include Milligan’s school code (003511). Don’t forgetyour PIN numbers at this site — one PIN for each student anda different PIN for parents.

n TIP: Some families incorrectly assume that they do not qualifyfor need-based assistance and skip this important step. The onlyway to make sure that you are eligible to be considered for need-based assistance at Milligan is to submit a FAFSA.

n TIP: If you or your family have special circumstances that impactyour financial situation, tell your Milligan SFS counselor. Examplesinclude unusual medical expenses or a large decrease in incomefrom last year to this year.

n TIP: Sometimes we may request additional documentationaccording to federal, state, or institutional policies. If you are askedto submit tax returns or other documents to the Student FinancialServices Office, please do so promptly.
