NOV/DEC 2019 LETTER TO ThE MEMbERshIp

LETTER TOThE MEMbERshIpby Maikel Correa, MAC Club Manager

Dear Valued Members, Summer was a blast here at MAC on Water. The pontoon boat was a hit and the river front patio was the place to be for lunch. To this day I get Members asking me if we would be willing to keep MAC on Water when we move back to our beautifully renovated building. I have politely reminded them that they most likely won’t want to come back after they step foot in the new space. It would be like asking a Bucks season ticket holder now if they would like to watch a Bucks game in the old Bradley Center if it were still there. The MAC Development is moving along at 758 and our Hard Hat Tours are a must to see firsthand progress as it happens. Once you experience the space you can feel the excitement. Members are leaving with smiles on their faces and with a renewed energy and fun anticipation to be able to call this home again. Make sure to mark your calendars for the next few tours (go to page 8 for more info).

In my Letters to Membership I generally reference reminders of what’s happening or what’s to come but this time I want to pay special attention to what Drew Hunn, our Membership Committee Chair and Board Member, teed up in his speech at the Roundtable Kick Off Breakfast. Peter Feigin, President of the Milwaukee Bucks, was our guest speaker for that event. In Drew’s introduction, he made a very wise connection to what the Bucks were, went through and are today to what we are going through as MAC Members. I watched the room and the feedback after was, “Wow, that was a great comparison. I never thought about it like that before…this is even more encouraging.” You’ll find his intro on page 12. Please be sure to give it a read and hopefully some reflection.

As we enter this holiday season, I am so grateful to be a part of the MAC today and its renewal. You’ve heard it before but it’s worth mentioning again, this is a great time to be a part of the Milwaukee Athletic Club.

Many blessings to you and your family.

Thank you,

Maikel CorreaMAC Club Manager

HARDHAT

I've had several Members tell me that when they walked in and saw the place torn up they felt it was both depressing and exciting. But, the thrill of looking forward to what it's going to be when we move back left them hopeful and encouraged.

It was jaw dropping to see the lower level. That space has changed the most. The women's locker room is completely removed.

I highly recommend these tours. They are informative, encouraging and exciting. —Brad Schendel

Where did you grow up and attend school?I grew up in Milwaukee and attended Marquette High School. I did my undergrad at UW Milwaukee for engineering and UW Madison for graduate school.

What is your current role?I am the President and CEO of GRAEF. I’ve been working there for years and moved up the ranks through hard work.

How long have you been a MAC Member? For about 20 years. There was a Principal in the company who was a Member and left our firm. We would have company meetings here and get golf rounds at the Bog and that sort of thing. When he left I decided to join to have access to the Club for the reasons we had used it but also for the social and athletic amenities.

Why did you choose to become a MAC Board Member?I was encouraged by some existing Board Members to run. There was a feeling that the EMHAC group should have some representation. I thought that my background in construction and development, coupled with my long history as a Member, could help the Club during this challenging time. I also wanted to be a conduit to get the message back to the Members regarding our future plans.

What are your interests outside of the office?Golf, spectator sports, and bicycling. I’m also heavily involved with a half dozen or so non-profits. I’m on the Board of the United Way and the Zoological Society

as well as other non-profits. I am also on the Board of the UWM Foundation and will serve as Vice-Chair of that board in 2020 and Chair in 2021. I am very supportive of UWM. The economic activity that the university generates and the world-class level of research they do is very undervalued.

You currently lead the largest Roundtable group; how did that happen? Our group is up to 40 Members, which is amazing. It’s been successful but in truth I took over a high functioning group from Mark Spaeth about 8 years ago. The MAC Roundtable program is such a strong benefit of being a Member... I think Members should take advantage of this program.

At the roundtables, you get access to very smart and experienced people in a small group setting. These are often guest speakers but are also the other roundtable Members. Often, our guests are more open so you can ask more questions. The roundtable guest speakers are top notch. The Members are accomplished with a mixed group of skill sets…there’s a lot of learning going on. Our group, for instance, has a great mix of seasoned and young people. Finally, each year we go off-site and get to see interesting places that you often can’t visit. I remember when we went to the top of the Gas Light building and saw the flame and all its inner workings.

What is something someone would be surprised to know about you?I once (a long time ago) ran a marathon in under 4 hours.

What would your perfect day look like?I’d be at a sunny resort, relaxing around the pool, playing a round of golf and watching the sunset with my wife and kids.

What are your thoughts about the MAC Reimagined? For me, the MAC is an important part of business, social and health so I’m looking forward to the next chapter. We are going through a tough transition period, but the plan put in place is a great one. It is developing more slowly than we would like, but it will be worth the wait. I think the refurbished Broadway facility will be spectacular when it’s done. I’m in the business and I’m looking at it critically…the new design is excellent, and our Members are going to get a great value when we move back to Broadway.

What do you want to say about the MAC on Water?I know the interim clubhouse isn’t ideal, but it is really nice and is in a great location. I think with our temporary move we have lost some of the social interaction of the Club. We have some great activities going. I encourage Members to attend and stay involved.

Being a Member of the MAC has had a very important effect on my life-in business, with my health and in making good friends along the way

NOV/DEC 2019

I recall contacting the Bucks to let them know I didn't plan to renew my tickets for next year. My ticket rep politely recorded my request, but the next day, I got a phone call from Bucks owner and US Senator, Herb Kohl, telling me I should reconsider. I remember how I felt as a Bucks fan in 2012. The product was tired, attendance was down, I questioned the value both I and the city of Milwaukee were getting from our NBA team. I thought about spending my time and money elsewhere. I had doubts that building a new arena was the right thing to do.

Fast forward 5 years. It's the first season playing in the Fiserv Forum, the Bucks are in 1st place all year, go on to win 60 games, reach the Eastern Conference Finals, our team has developed one of the most popular athletes on the plan. The Bucks have changed the brand and culture of not only their team, but the West Side of Milwaukee's Downtown and the entire state of WI.

I see parallels between the Bucks organization and the Milwaukee Athletic Club. I talk to a lot of Members who wonder: "Am I getting the value I need from the Club or should my dollars go elsewhere?" They also have doubts that a large investment in our Clubhouse is the solution to the challenges faced by our private Club.

Well guess what? Our Club has an enormous opportunity in front of us. Maybe we don't all see it at this moment, but the MAC has reached its inflection point. The investment is secured. The marketing machine is ramping up with the addition of Donald Driver's athletic training team. Significant investments in rebranding and adding experience & talent to our Club's front office.

Stick with us, a little bit longer. We're not talking about re-opening next year to a refurbished version of the Milwaukee Athletic Club. We're going to re-open in about a year and the Milwaukee Athletic Club will literally be the finest private city club in the Midwest. Stick with us, you are going to be very proud of your Club.

Do you remember how you felt about the Bucks back in 2012/2013?

NOV/DEC 2019

On October 3, Peter Feigin, Milwaukee Bucks President, presented to the MAC Roundtable Group. He highlighted the Bucks road to success in building the Fiserv Forum and the Bucks brand sharing the Bucks Guiding Principles.

Members and Mr. Feigin drew parallels to the MAC's journey. Mr. Feigin specifically spoke of the Bucks lacking a solid brand and how starting from scratch was an advantage.

He referenced how the Fiserv Forum took time to get approved. Feigin said he attended 200+ speaking engagements per year the first two years to build relationships around WI and start to change opinion. There were many speed bumps but their persever-ance has lead to a remarkable, business and cultural boost for Milwaukee.

Members also had the opportunity to ask pointed, engaging questions which led to aha moments and head bobbing in agreement.

A special thank you to Mr. Feigin for his time and for reinvigorating MAC Members.

Drew Hunn introduced Peter Feigen drawing similarities to the Bucks/Fiserv and the MAC. Drew also introduced Maggie Bleau, our new Membership Director. Maggie kicked off the Just One Member Referral campaign.

NOV/DEC 2019

Where did you grow up and attend school?

I grew up in South Hammond, Indiana where I

attended high school at Bishop Noll Institute. I

received my undergrad degree at Ball State and

had the opportunity to spend one year at the

Universite de Nantes, France. My degree is in

Secondary French Education.

How long have you worked for the MAC?

I started early September.

What did you do before your role as Membership

Director?

I was the Business Development Manager at the

Union League Club of Chicago for just over three

years. Prior to Union League, I was a Senior Sales

Manager at Marriott where my favorite markets

were sports and entertainment.

What's your favorite part of working here?

I love learning the history of the Club and getting

to know our Members. I am very excited for what

the future holds for all of us. This is a very exciting

time to be in Milwaukee!

What are your thoughts about programming?

I look forward to learning about all the programming

at the MAC. I bring a lot of ideas with me that were

successful at the ULCC and look forward to creating

and attending MAC Member events.

What are your hobbies?

I am a Mini Cooper enthusiast. I try to do as many

rallies as I can; I actually rallied once through Green

Bay and was stopped by Harley who

asked what was going on and I told

him we were the new 1%! I have

owned three Mini Coopers; I just can’t

imagine any other car. I also love to

travel and collect passport stamps; I

am lucky to have seen quite a bit of

this big world! In my free time, I enjoy

antiquing and finding treasures that

can be repurposed or refinished.

What would someone be

surprised to

learn/know about you?

Je crois que le plupart

seraient surprise que

je sois prof de francais!

Simply said, I think most

would be surprised that I

was a French teacher.

Anything else you want people to know about you?

As much as I love being a city person and keeping my

finger on the pulse, I welcome quiet retreats away.

Three years ago, I rehabbed a camper in central

Indiana and I welcome getting “off the grid” and

sitting by a bonfire. I am a little proud to gloat I have

become quite the gourmet griller.

It was a spooky fun time for families. They built slime jars, played pin

Joyce Rohde, 91 years old, athletic attendant and babysitter for roughly 25 years at the MAC joined the fun.

Meet us in the City Center Stairwell to climb 10 flights.

Stair climbing studies show:- Climbing just eight flights of stairs a day lowers average early

mortality risk by 33%- Seven minutes stair climbing a day can halve the risk of heart

attack over 10 years- Just two minutes extra stair climbing a day is enough to stop

average middle age weight gain- Stair climbing delivers these benefits by improving our

cardiovascular fitness. It's officially classed as a 'vigorous' form exercise and burns more calories per minute than jogging.

What sparked your interest in health & fitness?

- I have a passion for sport sciences and the human

body in general, also helping others to change and

improve their lives is so rewarding and meaningful....

I just love it. Best job EVER!

How long have you taught at the Milwaukee

Athletic Club and what do you enjoy the most

about teaching here?

I have been teaching at the MAC for almost 10 years

I believe... oh wow... Time flies when you are having

fun!!! The thing I enjoy the most about teaching here

is the interactions I have with others. There is a reason

why Members and Employees stay at the MAC so

long and I think it’s because when you join the MAC,

you become part of a great community with a unique

environment where everyone knows each other and

are actively engaged.

Do you have a special morning routine?

I work too early to have time for any morning routine,

but I do have a morning workout for when I have a

break later in the a.m.

List three things people may not know about you:

1.) I have a Master in Sport Sciences and one in

Business Sciences with 4.00 G.P.A and I wrote a

book titled "Sports Development In Indonesia" (In

France) and had 2 chapters published in a book about

"Marketing Development and Strategies" (in USA).

2.) I have my own Business: Pro-Active On-Site

Corporate Fitness L.L.C. My Business provides

Wellness programs and specializes in offering on-site

group fitness classes to employees at their workplace.

3.) I have a National University Kickboxing Champion

Title (2003- Paris, France).

What is your best piece of fitness advice?

If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you. You

can't sit and wish for things to happen by themselves,

the process to get in shape is hard but so worth it. You

have to stay committed and be patient. Everybody has

bad days or "cheat" days but stick with it no matter

what, your health is priority!

“Having been through 4 separate surgeries due to college basketball-related injuries that effectively ended by college career, I want to share the following info in the hopes Members get ahead of possible injuries.” Matt Krueger, MAC Athletics Manager/Sport Coordinator •••Basketball was first introduced to the world in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, using a soccer ball and two peach baskets. Today's high-speed, physical sport scarcely resembles the original game. With modern basketballs fast pace game come many opportunities for injuries. It is estimated that more than 1.6 million injuries are associated with basketball each year.

Most common basketball injuries and how to treat them:

Ankle Sprains- Treatment for an ankle sprain involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). The need for X-rays and evaluation by a physician is determined on a case by-case basis and depends on the severity and location of pain. Pain and swelling over the bone itself may need further evaluation. An injury to the ankle in a child who is still growing could represent a simple sprain or could be the result of an injury to the growth plates located around the ankle and should be evaluated by a physician.

jammed Fingers- Jammed fingers occur when the ball contacts the end of the finger and causes significant swelling of a single joint. Application of ice and buddy taping the finger to the adjacent finger may provide some relief and allow the athlete to return to play. If pain and swelling persist, evaluation by a physician or athletic trainer is recommended and an x-ray of the finger may be needed.

Knee injuries- Basketball requires extensive stop and go and cutting maneuvers which can put the ligaments and menisci of the knee at risk. Injury to the medial collateral ligament is most common following a blow to the outside of the knee and can often be treated with ice, bracing and a gradual return to activity.

An injury to the anterior cruciate ligament is a more serious injury and can occur with an abrupt change in direction and landing for the jump. Although this ligament tear is most commonly a season ending injury that requires corrective surgery, current techniques used to repair the ACL ligament generally allow the player to return to play the following season.

Deep thigh Bruising- Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Commercially available girdles with thigh pads are now available for protection.

Facial Cuts- Depending on the depth of the injury, the cut may require stitches or a "butterfly" sterile tape. Ice may provide pain relief and decrease swelling. Players can return to play after all blood is removed and the wound is dressed.

Foot Fractures- Stress fractures can occur from a rapid increase in activity level or training or from overtraining. Stress fractures in basketball most commonly occur in the foot and lower leg (tibia). Once diagnosed, a period of immobilization and non-weight bearing is recommended. Return to play is permitted once the fracture has completely healed and the athlete is pain free.

tips for prevention:Have a pre-season physical examination and follow your doctor's recommendations for basketball injury prevention.

Hydrate adequately - waiting until you are thirsty is often too late to hydrate properly.

Pay attention to environmental recommendations, especially in relation to excessively hot and humid weather, to help avoid heat illness.

Maintain proper fitness - injury rates are higher in athletes who have not adequately prepared physically.

After a period of inactivity, progress gradually back to full-contact basketball through activities such as aerobic conditioning, strength training, and agility training.

Avoid overuse injuries - more is not always better! Many sports medicine specialists believe that it is beneficial to take at least one season off each year. Try to avoid the pressure that is now exerted on many young athletes to over-train. Listen to your body and decrease training time and intensity if pain or discomfort develops. This will reduce the risk of injury and help avoid "burn-out."

Talk with your coach and/or athletic trainer about an ACL injury prevention program and incorporating the training principles into team warm-ups.

The athlete should return to play only when clearance is granted by a health care professional.

Chef’s TableChef Alex's Featured Dish

Steak au poivreINGREDIENTSBeef tenderloin 6 to 8 ounces each about 11/2 inches thick Kosher salt 2 tablespoons whole peppercorns 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 teaspoon olive oil 1/3 cup cognac. 1 cup heavy cream

Coarsely crush the peppercorns with a mortar and pestle, the bottom of a cast iron skillet, or using a mallet and pie pan. Spread the peppercorns evenly onto a plate. Press the fillets, on both sides, into the pepper until it coats the surface. Set aside.

In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil. As soon as the butter and oil begin to turn golden and smoke, gently place the steaks in the pan. For medium-rare, cook for 4 minutes on each side. Once done, remove the steaks to a plate, tent with foil and set aside. Pour off the excess fat but do not wipe or scrape the pan.

Off of the heat, add 1/3 cup Cognac to the pan and carefully ignite the alcohol with a long match or firestick. Gently shake pan until the flames die. Return the pan to medium heat and add the cream. Bring the mixture to a boil and whisk until the sauce coats the back of a spoon, approximately 5 to 6 minutes. Add the teaspoon of Cognac and season, to taste, with salt. Add the steaks back to the pan, spoon the sauce over, and serve.

ThanksgivingMy favorite is a light Rose Reine De La Ville from Corsica made from the Niellucciu/Grenache Grapes. This type of wine is great for the chef to sip on while he or she gets the turkey prepared.

Since Thanksgiving meal involves a lot of prep work, at $12-15/bottle you can bring several bottles for the sous-chefs on hand.

For the meal, I like the Oregon Pinot Noir because it balances out the meal—enough fruit with the light balance and structure of the Oregon wine country. Most wine shops carry a great selection from Willamette Valley wines and the range should be $18-30/bottle.

Christmas EveOne of my Christmas Eve favorites is the Piegaia Chianti Classico — a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. It’s a mid-range in structure yet firm on the mouth feel with the flavors of cherries and dark stone fruits. It’s a fit for both hot or cold Hors d'oeuvres. $15-18/bottle.

Christmas DinnerLet’s go big for Christmas Day with the 2014 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon Saddleback Cellars Oakville. This is a very well balanced Cabernet. Its wine maker, Nils Venge, was the first winemaker in Napa to get a 100 point score from Robert Parker. It has pleasing aromas of black currant and anise balanced with ripe raspberry and a hint of cassis. Most stores in Milwaukee stock Saddleback 92 point rated at a price of $45-50/bottle.

New Year’s EveToast the new year with sparkling wines like French Champagnes, Italian Proseccos or even a Spanish cava. I prefer the Napa Valley Sparkling, Mums, Domaine Caneros, Chandon and of course, Roederer Estates. All are available locally for $18-25/bottle.

Cheers to you and yours this holiday season.
