Profit.” Yet nearly 40 percent of respondentsin The UPS Store’s survey agreed orstrongly agreed that they feel “over-whelmed” by the challenge.

“Any business owner who can make astrong, persuasive pitch for the funding oftheir business can probably do the same forthe products or servicesof that business,”Lemonis said.

To help small businesses transfer the skillof selling to funders to selling to customers,Lemonis offers the following tips:

Know your target customer. Just as youplayed to the interests and likings of yourfunders, you can do the same with potentialcustomers through strategic marketing.

Recognize that the keys to success forany small business are people, process andproduct.

Those funding your business will want toknow you have those three in order. If youdo, your customers will be more confident inyour business, too.

Understand that people are the corner-stone of your business. Find the right peopleto make sure they’re marketing and sellingyour brand the way you would.

Be vulnerable, be honest and communi-cate. This stands true for every aspect ofyour business, including developing the nextsteps of your marketing strategy.

If you share your business or your brand’sstory with a genuine approach, your suc-cess will increase.

These are things most small businessowners can do. Yet there are also marketingprocesses and skills that many small busi-ness owners aren’t familiar with and needhelp from others to acquire.

Among those who can provide help areThe UPS Store’s 4,500 locations across thenation.

These stores are independently ownedand operated, so store owners understandthe challenge firsthand. Part of their missionis to help local startups, entrepreneurs andsmall businesses solve their problems, in-cluding marketing, printing, shipping andmailboxes.

“I encourage small business owners tofind new ways to break down the marketingbarrier and learn marketing processes thatwill attract new customers and grow theirbusiness,” Lemonis said.

4 Essential Strategies forGrowing Your Business

(Family Features) Since opening its first store in1986, the foundation of Mattress Firm’s successhas been built on a commitment to its core val-ues: service, integrity and passion.

Now, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, a three-decade jour-ney has seen it grow from a single Houston store to 3,500 stores in 48states. The following strategies can help grow the success of your busi-ness, too.

Be deeply connected and highly visible. Sophisticated product knowl-edge, meticulous financial measurements and high-level strategic plan-ning are essential skills for every business leader. However, successfulmanagers put just as much emphasis on getting to know people as theydo learning markets and numbers.

Building relationships with your customers, your community and yourindustry is essential to understanding how to serve their needs. Strongpersonal connections – between team members and management; thecompany and the community; and retailers and business partners – arethe keys to the success of any business.

Be bold. A bold vision to revolutionize the sleep industry became areality when the doors to the first Mattress Firm store opened July 4,1986 in Houston.

know at the time that a single store would grow into a pub-licly traded company with 10,000 employees nationwide, but they believed in their vision and their values.

Plans written down on paper are great – they are usedall the time to evaluate new markets and consider futureopportunities, for example – but real leadership requiresmore than just a strategic plan; it takes boldness and thecourage to act decisively on not only data-driven insights, but the knowledge that you’ve gained from your relation-ships in your industry and community.

Be passionate. It is essential for leaders to be passionateabout their business for two reasons. First, customers re-spond best to someone who shows that they genuinelycare about solving the problem that their product is in-tended to solve.

Second, your passion will carry you through the inevitablesetbacks along your way to success. Ask how your com-pany helps your customers, then use that answer as inspi-ration when times get tough.

Invite others to share in your success. One of the mostimportant things a leader can do is develop the next gen-eration of leaders to ensure the ongoing success of the or-ganization.

This requires confidence on your part, as you cannot feelthreatened by new ideas and new talent that are the naturalresult of cultivating a successful team. The emphasis on in-clusivity and collaboration will trickle down through a com-pany’s culture, creating an environment where all teammembers feel empowered to share both ideas and con-cerns in the spirit of constant improvement.

Companies such as Mattress Firm foster a positive senseof discontent, feeling pride for far they’ve come, but alwayslooking for ways to improve the customer experience. If youtrust your team members, they will trust you.

If you build a culture of clarity, accountability and respect, you will become an employer of choice that attracts, retainsand develops top talent.

Mattress Firm’s founders dreamed big in 1986. Theyopened a store, but more importantly, they had a vision toimprove lives through a better night’s sleep.

Every day since then, passion, culture and community, combined with the willingness to do the hard work neces-sary to get the job done, has made that dream come tofruition. Learn more at MattressFirm.com.
