PrescriptionDrug Pricing,A National Crisis

theSkimm's Guide to CBDYou’ve already heard a

million weed puns. Sowe’ll spare you the 4/20jokes and tell you aboutsomething else: CBD.

I’ve seen the letters be-fore, but what exactly isCBD?Alright, let’s talk a little

science…Marijuana and

hemp...cannabis plantcousins. Marijuana getsyou high. Hemp doesn’t.That’s because marijuanahas a lot more…

THC...aka tetrahydro-cannabinol (please usethis term at a party andsee how it goes). It’s thenaturally occurring com-pound in cannabis thatgets you high.

CBD...aka cannabidiol. Also a naturally occurringcompound in cannabis.CBD can be extractedfrom marijuana and hemp. But it doesn’t get you high.

What’s so great aboutCBD then?CBD won’t have you

reaching for the potatochips to cure yourmunchies. But it may make you feel

relaxed and zen. Think:Matthew McConaughey in“Dazed and Confused,”but more zen thanburnout. CBD has helped

people with things likeanxiety, insomnia, painmanagement, acne andreducing opioid cravings. Mandy Moore uses it to

help make wearing heelsless painful, and OliviaWilde has used it to helpwith neck pain. Plus it apparently makes

for a great baby showertheme.

But why am I hearingso much about CBD re-cently?There are a few reasons

for that. One: the spreadof legalized weed aroundthe US. Because morestates are cool with MaryJane, they may also use itto extract CBD. Two: the rise in alterna-

tive therapies. As researchon alternative methods to

treat certain medical prob-lems increases, many aregoing with the option thatdoesn’t require things likemedications. Which leads to, three:

Americans are increas-ingly more anxious andstressed, and many areturning to CBD to help. Also, the FDA has sort ofjumped on the CBD band-wagon – last year, it ap-proved the firstcannabis-based drug(which has CBD) to treatsevere forms of epilepsy inchildren.

So if the FDA is cool

with it, does that meanit’s legal? Not necessarily. Last

year, the federal govern-

ment legalized hemp andCBD that comes from it.But the gov has main-tained that weed is ille-gal...meaning CBD fromweed is illegal. The FDA still has the au-

thority to say whether it’sallowed in things like foodor drinks. Right now, it says ‘that’s

gonna be a no for us, dog,’but it’s looking into how toregulate it for the future.States have their own lawsaround weed and CBD –check yours here.

Ok well is it safe? The World Health Organ-

ization says there isn’t anyevidence of health-relatedissues linked to pure CBD.

plan save me money? Privateinsurers help keep premiumsdown through programs likedisease and chronic caremanagement, which help peo-ple better manage health con-ditions and, in turn, reducemedical costs. You’ll still need to pay your

Medicare Part B premium, which covers medical servicesand preventive care. Youmight want to use the addi-tional premium dollars yousave for out-of-pocket medicalcosts, such as co-pays.Do I need to sign up for

Medicare Parts A and B if I’mstill working? If you or your spouse have

health insurance from an em-ployer, you can delay enrollingin Medicare until the employ-ment or the coverage stops. At that point, you’re entitled

to a special enrollment periodof up to eight months to signup for Medicare without incur-ring any late penalties.Resources are available to

help you in this process, in-cluding licensed sales agents, local seminars, and websitessuch as medicare.gov and hu-mana.com/Medicare. You canalso call 1-800-MEDICARE(1-800-633-4227) (or TTY: 1-877-486-2048) 24 hours aday, seven days a week, orcall Humana at 1-800-213-5286 (TTY: 711) 8 a.m. to 8p.m. local time seven days aweek. As with any major decision,

proper research will go a longway toward making the bestplan choice for your personalhealth care needs.Humana is a Medicare Ad-

vantage HMO, PPO, andPFFS organization, andstand-alone prescription drugplan, with a Medicare con-tract. Enrollment in any Hu-mana plan depends on planrenewal.

(continued from cover page)

But because there haveonly been a few trials onhumans, there’s still a lotwe don’t know. Including its long-term

effects or whether you canmix it with some medica-tions. Also, if you’re buying

something with CBD in it,it could also have thingslike THC since the FDAisn’t regulating it. But it ismaking sure that compa-nies aren’t creating falseadvertising around CBD.Aka claiming their CBDproducts cure Alzheimer’sand cancer.

Speaking of, how isthat business doing? Not too bad. Naturally,

the biz world went all-in onCBD once it realized itcould make a lot of moneyoff these kinds of prod-ucts. It’s reportedly a $1 billion

industry – and may reach$16 billion by 2025. And ever since the gov

legalized hemp, farmers

have had a field day. Those that grow hemp arereportedly seeing a surgein demand and profits.

K I’m sold. Where can Iget this stuff?Pretty much anywhere.

CVS stores in eight statesare already selling CBDproducts (think: lotionsand sprays), and Wal-greens says it’ll do thesame.

There are also a ton ofonline stores that sellthese products too. Com-panies are selling CBD-in-fused everything. To name a few examples:

shampoos, beer, caramels, bath bombs, makeup, face masks, anddog treats. Yes, your dog can get

chill AF too. You mightalso find a bar serving

cocktails with CBD.theSkimmMillions of Americans

use CBD products, andmany praise its benefits. While it’s gotten a lot ofhype and can have posi-tive effects on some peo-ple, there’s still a lot ofunknown around it. So make sure you do

your research before try-ing something out.

Despite strugglesof printed mediaand “fake news,” the CommunityJournal continues to cham-pion the causes of Black Milwaukee(First published as an editorial on July 24, 2019)

Two decades ago, columnist Mikel Holt authored an article forthe Milwaukee Press Club about the importance of the BlackPress. Holt stressed the uniqueness of the Black Media, as wellas its uncompromising role as an arm of the Civil Rights Move-ment.

He noted that newspapers from Freeman's Journal to the Com-munity Journal have not only defended African Americans fromthe tentacles of White Supremacy but paved the way for gener-ations in our quest for equal rights and justice.

For four decades your MCJ has continued that mission, iden-tifying problems, providing solutions, and frequently advocatingfor Black America to “WAKE UP!” Sometimes this newspaperhas been forced to criticize our own for apathy or lack of politicalparticipation. WE can do so, because we’re talking to family.

Unlike any other newspaper in the state, we have been the cat-alyst for Black empowerment, cultural development, and evenspiritual growth.

We have advocated for state and local laws, uncoveredschemes and deceptions, and led campaigns for justice and ac-countability.

A recent case in point clearly illustrates this newspaper’s im-portance to our Community as a communication entity for ourpeople.

Last week, the city’s daily mainstream newspaper, the Milwau-kee Journal Sentinel—in its Green Sheet news quiz—had a ques-tion related to the shooting death of three-year-old BrooklynHarris. She was killed while riding in her mother’s SUV during aroad rage incident on July 13.

Many in the community who had been touched by Brooklyn’ssenseless death, expressed justified outrage at the paper’s in-sensitivity and disrespect to the little girls’ family by trivializingher death in the form of a question!

Under the title of “correction,” the newspaper’s editor apolo-gized for the “inappropriate question,” and that it was not madewith bad intentions. The editor said the Green Sheet section’seditor was “on vacation.”

This is why the Black press is needed! Mainstream media en-tities don’t have the sensitivity, empathy, or desire to plead thecauses of people of color, especially Black people. We’re simplya sensational headline or trivia question that feeds the main-stream (White) community’s negative opinions, beliefs and nar-rative as to who we are as a people.

We seek not to pat ourselves on the back by emphasizing ourcommitment, but instead to challenge the misconception thatsocial media can fill the news and advocacy void the Black Presshas assumed since 1827.

While it is true there has been a relative decline in newsprint

across the board, the Black Press is still as relevant today as itwas when the original Journal declared on its masthead, "WeWish to Plead our Own Cause."

That manta is intrinsic on every page of your Community Jour-nal today and fills a void that no other media can. It is also whatmakes us relevant even as we combat struggling subscriptionsand the onslaught of social media misinformation that perme-ates the blog world, providing propaganda masked as fact.

We freely acknowledge that “fake news” has not only hurt thelegitimacy of genuine and honest media and reporting, but hasalso undercut American democracy and the fourth estate. Wealso recognize there are few, if any, unbiased news outlets today.

Yet it should also be known The Milwaukee Community Journalhas not been sued for libel in our entire 40-plus year history, norcan anyone say we have presented fake news. Indeed, we admitour bias because we report news from an Africentric perspectiveand analyze events and policies based on how they specificallywill impact our Community.

That is our mission and purpose and what makes us uniqueand a household name in our Community. The fact that you arereading this editorial is a testament to your quest for knowledge, analyzation of current events, and political paradigms. We canassume you don't have to be convinced of our importance.

But others may not be so sophisticated or understand the dif-ference between legitimate news and propaganda masked as in-formation. The most important gift we can provide is wisdom. An educated mind is the most powerful weapon against igno-rance and oppression.
