ALTERNATING POSSESSION

The alternating possession procedure is the method of putting the ball in play by a throw-in when:

a. A held ball occurs.b. The ball goes out of bounds, as in 7-3.c. Simultaneous floor or free-throw violations occur.d. A live ball lodges between the backboard and ring or comes to rest on the

flange, unless a free throw or throw-in follows.e. Opponents commit simultaneous goaltending or basket-interference

violations.f. The point of interruption cannot be determined as in 4-36-2c.

ALTERNATING POSSESSION

The alternating-possession throw-in ends and the arrow is reversed when:

a. The passed ball touches or is legally touched by another player inbounds.b. The passed ball touches or is touched by another player out of bounds.c. The throw-in team commits a throw-in violation.

The opportunity to make an alternating-possession throw-in is lost only if the throw-in team violates. If either team fouls or the “defensive” team violates during an alternating-possession throw-in, the throw-in team does not lose the possession arrow.

The third period ends after the resulting free throws. Since no penalty or part of a penalty carries over from one quarter to the next, Team B gets the ball under the alternating possession procedure to start the fourth period (R5-6 Exp 3; CB5.6 Comment A).

Ruling: Team B is awarded a throw-in from the spot out-of-bounds closest to where the foul occurred. Because the foul occurred before the alternating possession throw-in ended, Team A retains the arrow and will get the next throw-in under the alternating possession procedure (R6-4-5; see CB 6.4.5A).

Play: Team B has the arrow. Following a held ball, you give the ball to Team A for a throw-in by mistake. A1 passes to A2 who is dribbling up the court when you realizes a mistake has occurred. What would you do? What would happen if B2 kicked A1's throw-in pass and then you recognized the error?

Ruling: Once the throw-in ends, it is too late to change anything. Do not reverse the arrow and Team B will get the next throw-in under the alternating possession procedure (CB6.4.1D). If B2 kicks the throw-in pass, the alternating possession throw-in did not end so the mistake is corrected. Team B gets a throw-in under the alternating possession procedure, after which the arrow is reversed (CB6.4.1D).

Play is resumed with an alternating possession throw-in nearest the spot where the ball was located when the double foul occurred (see CB4.19.8E). In (b), since the try was successful, the point of interruption is a throw-in for Team B from anywhere along the end line (see CB4.19.8E).

Play: A1 is fouled but the table fails to inform you that it was Team B's seventh team foul. Team A is given a throw-in and A1 inbounds the ball to A2 who is tied up by B2 resulting in a held-ball. The error is discovered following the held ball call. The arrow favors: (a) Team A; (b) Team B. What do you do?

Play: A1 is fouled but the table fails to inform you that it was Team B's seventh team foul. Team A is given a throw-in and A1 inbounds the ball to A2 who is tied up by B2 resulting in a held-ball. The error is discovered following the held ball call. The arrow favors: (a) Team A; (b) Team B. What do you do?

Ruling: In (a), award the merited free throws and continue play from that action since Team A had not lost possession between the error and when it was recognized. However, in (b), the lane is cleared for A1's merited free throws and play resumes from the point of interruption which is an alternating-possession throw-in by Team B (CB2.10.1F).
