I would also suggest bringing pens and paper to this Workshop. Mime Away! (Opener) Duration: 10 Minutes To start off our Workshop this week, we will be doing a quick game of topic charades to get us up and moving! J Core Concepts The core concepts for this week are; 1. Structuralism 2. Critique 1: Anti-Structuralism 3. Critique 2: Politics and Power Dynamics 4. Critique 3: Media systems and Power Also! Three core questions to answer: 1. How is meaning communicated? 2. How can we understand the ways that meaning is possible? 3. What creates the potential for meaning? What’s In An Ad? (Structuralism) Duration: 20 Minutes For this activity, we are going to be looking at some gendered Ads – like the ones Professor Wagman showed us in class, and talking about the five ways that women are presented as weak in advertising, as proposed by Erving Goffman. We will be discussing how meanings are constructed and understood in society, and how that translates into ads, persuasion, and propaganda. Reminder, these five ways women are presented as weak are as follows: 1.Relative Size (women presented smaller or lower, relative to men) 2.Touch: (women always touching themselves) 3.Function Ranking (Occupation) 4.Subordination (Symbolized by lying down, for example) 5.Licensed Withdrawal (Looking out through faraway gazes)
