Dear Parents and Caregivers, We enjoyed a marvellous day at Uruti School on Friday at the Tainui Tabloid Sports. The weather was outstanding and the day was fabu- lous. Thank you to all of the parents for your help with transport, and or- ganisation on the day. Thanks too to the kids. It is great to have a day where the focus is on working together with kids from other schools. All of the kids in the cluster were amazing. Aren’t we lucky to be part of such a great network of rural schools? We have an opportunity to join in with St Josephs School to enter a combined team in the Year 5/6 Inter- school Sports competition. During this competition, we would play teams from Waitara Central, Tikoran- gi, and Kaimata. Between our two schools, we think that we could field very competitive rugby and netball teams. The competition is for year 5 and 6 students, and we are hoping to be able to continue again next year should we have success in a com- bined team this year. Students of the Week

Elye Fawkner, Remidy Weston and Sienna Ape-Esera were last week’s students of the week. Well done, keep up the fantastic effort!

ANZAC Day

We had a good representation at the Urenui ANZAC service on Saturday with the students laying our wreath at the Urenui memorial as part of the service. The chil-dren have been learning about the First World War and the sen-iors have been really fortunate to have been able to see and read letters written between home and the battle field brought in by Ani Butler and written between her great granduncle and grandaunt. We read one under the honours board in our hall so that the chil-dren could put faces to the kind of actions that were undertaken dur-ing this time.

Strategic Plan

Last week we looked at the progress made in the curriculum over the past three years against our last strategic Plan.

Goal Two: developing a full and balanced curriculum that makes effective use of our natural resources, people, and stories to connect our children with their environ-ment, heritage, and culture in ways that see them participate fully in all aspects of life at our rural school Experiencing Marine Reserves programme

has been undertaken, with environmental actions being featured in several publica-tions including New Zealand Fishing news which featured work by senior students on fishing sustainability that reached all primary students in North Taranaki.

A trip to Pioneer Village kicked off a unit of study on living in the past to centre pro-grammes around our school’s centenary in 2014.

Centenary celebrations went well and were well received by all involved.

Displays were amazing, children’s contribu-tion to the day impressed those present, and a centenary booklet WAS completed!

Sports teams have been entered in the local touch competition each year.

School has participated in Active Sticks pro-gramme for the last two years and has a team entered in the local hockey competi-tion this year.

The school has competed in the North Tara-naki Rippa Tournament in 2013 and 2014.

Two netball teams have been entered in the local Netball satellite with three entered in 2015.

A basketball team has been entered in the Waitara basketball competition, winning the last two years.

Over 20 children have been registered in the Weetbix Tryathlon each year through

school. The school has been supporting the Parin-

inihi project to eradicate pests in an effort to release kokako back into the reserve.

Puke Ariki have displayed work from our students around Kokako.

Deep water sessions have been held at Waitara Pools each year to prepare our students to survive in water they cannot stand up in.

Two camps have been undertaken with sen-ior students to Great Barrier Island, with the third senior camp being a Tainui Cluster Camp at Vertical Horizon.

Camps have been held for Year 1-3 stu-dents locally, and in 2015 an additional camp was held for our Year 4 students.

Consider this as we look to im-prove... Other than the three R’s, what do we want for our children in their first six years of formal schooling? What kind of experiences do we want for our children so that our school is the best place for them to learn and grow?

Interschool Rugby and

Netball

Children interested in being part of a combined team with St Josephs Wai-tara, have been given a form for your information and permission. There will be a trials session next Wednesday at St Josephs with the first games against Waitara Central being played the following day (next Thursday). Games are played simul-taneously, so those girls who play both will have to pick a code (Sorry girls!). Please return the form ASAP so that we can include your child in the trials next Wednesday.
