MINDFULNESS BASED ACTIVITIES  Activity: Lavender eye pillows

Group or individual: Group

Materials:

• Fabric in assorted colours • Matching thread • Dried peas or beans • Dried lavender flowers

Method: These pillows can either be premade or made with the children. By involving the children in the making of these pillows, they are more likely to respect and use them. The children can be involved in all stages of this activity but will need close supervision when/if using scissors, needles or sewing machines. These pillows can be used during meditation or rest time to aid in relaxation and stillness. See resources section for pattern and instructions for this activity. Use: Once these pillows are made the can be used for both group meditation and individually. The pillows can be left in the ‘calm corner’ to allow the children access to them at all times. Children will be encouraged to use the pillows when they need time to relax or distress. They can take time out to sit in the bean bags with the pillow over their eyes and either enjoy the stillness or listen to one of the meditation tapes.

Learning objective:

• Ability to regulate emotions • Decrease in stress and anxiety • Decreased reactivity

Link to VEYLDF: Outcome 1.1: Children feel safe, secure and supported Outcome 3.2: Children take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing
