When it comes to being a Parent, we understand how tough your job can be. As a Parent today you face challenges that didn’t exist 30, 20 or even 10 years ago.

Challenges like cyber bullying, violence on campus, testing anxiety, the positive and negative impact of the Internet and Globalization, social media and the advantages and pitfalls of equipping your child with a mobile phone.

Your child might be showing signs of stress or anxiety, acting out when it comes to doing homework or going to bed on time. Additional, you may feel that the emphasis at your child’s school has shifted from a learning culture to a testing culture.

Unlike other parenting

philosophies and skills you learned from your parents, who is there to teach you how to handle video-game addiction, or the drama of social media? With a lack of models to follow, its no wonder you often feel overwhelmed and alone.

At MindUP™ our job is to do what we can to relieve your stress and provide the insights that will help you create more harmony at home

MindUP™ offers a Social and Emotional Learning curriculum and framework that helps your child flourish and become more resilient.

MindUP™ is grounded in Neuroscience, activated by Mindful Awareness, inspired by Positive Psychology and a catalyst for Social and Emotional Learning. A curriculum of 15

lessons that, when combined with key principles and practices at school and at home, help children develop self-regulation and focus, an improved ability to work well with others and improved relationships with themselves, siblings and with the community.

Children who are engaged in MindUP™ classrooms are more optimistic, empathetic, compassionate and have lower levels of stress and anxiety.

Parents, we salute you. This is why we will do whatever it takes to help make your road easier to travel.

I hope this guide helps answer your questions. And I hope we can look forward to bringing MindUP™ to your school, or a little MindUP™ thinking to your home life. Best regards,

Laurie Coots [email protected]

Why Parents Love MindUP™

The MindUP™ program shifts perspective — cultivating positive behaviour, improved learning and scholastic performance, as well as improving student’s relationships with themselves and others. These are the qualities our children need in order to build success for a lifetime.

The MindUP™ framework of 15 lessons is tailored appropriately to student’s age group and development level. Each lesson gives students the knowledge, skills and practices that help them increase their focus and overall resilience.

MindUP™ is evidence based and CASEL accredited. This is of great importance to Parents, as it means that our program provides specific skills and practices to develop all five CASEL objectives, from Self-Awareness to Responsible Decision Making.

MindUP™ is brought to life by Teachers in a classroom following a training at their school or through a regional training of like-minded Teachers.

Our program starts with a science-centric lesson, teaching children about their brains and how it influences thinking, emotions and behavior. Specifically, children learn about three important parts of the brain: the prefrontal cortex, or the decision maker, the amygdala — the warning system (and often trouble maker), and the hippocampus - the memory holder.

In addition to the 15 Lessons, MindUP™ provides a series of practices, like “Brain Breaks” — which we recommend to be done three times a day and before any testing. We also include activites of reflection, gratitude and pro-social behavior. For a more complete look at the 15 Lessons

we encourage you to check our website at www.mindup.org

For schools who enroll in a school-wide training, we offer an added MindUP™ Parent Workshop. This two-hour workshop provides an overview of what Parents should expect from the MindUP™ program and offers an interactive review of the core practices — including “Brain Breaks.” We find that this workshop encourages home support and practice, leading to even better success.

We also encourage Parents to sign up for our MindUP™ for Parents newsletter, which delivers the latest information and intelligence on newly released brain studies, learning innovations, SEL research and helpful tips and tricks— all which promote a happier and healthier home life.

We Support Your Child’s Learning

Parents involved in MindUP™ find that they have new techniques to better cope and manage the challenges of everyday work/life stress.

Our Mindful Awareness, empathy, kindness and compassion skills help children build healthy relationships with Parents, siblings, and the community.

MindUp™ also helps Parents raise the level of behavioral aspirations at home. First, by helping everyone in the family handle challenges and setbacks,

with a sense of optimism and focus. And second, by reducing arguments by providing increased appreciation and respect for the perspectives of others, and third, MindUP™ encourges the kind of kindness and pro-social behavior that can create a newly shared unity for the whole family.

What Parents are saying:“We parents are impressed by

what our children are learning about their brains and bringing their strategies for calming

themselves home.”–Surrey, BC, Canada

“MindUP™ gives parents the tools that it takes to help raise a child who thinks of others, isn’t afraid to connect with peers and to just simply try one’s best to be one’s best…one day at a time.”

–Beach Cities, California

SEL IMPLEMENTATION SECRETS

Here in the Handbook of Mindfulness in Education, you will find a summary of much of the MindUP™ research that has been published to date.

Here you will learn how a social and emotional learning (SEL) program involving mindfulness andcaring for others, enhances cognitive control, reducesstress, promotes well-being and prosociality, and produces positive school outcomes.

Here you will find a presentation: SEL Implementation and Sustainability: What Does the Research Say? by Kimberly A. Schonert-Reichl, Ph.D. that tracks the strengths of different implementation models.

Reach out to your PrincipalDear Principal X.

I know you have a commitment to providing the very best to the students at XX School. As a Parent of a student, I would like to introduce you to MIndUP™ — a program implemented in schools, that has been delivering big results and making major headlines recently.

The Hawn Foundation was created by Goldie Hawn 13 years ago, and their signature program — MindUP™ is taking the education world by storm. MindUP™ is grounded in Neuroscience, activated by Mindful Awareness, inspired by Positive Psychology and a catalyst for Social and Emotional Learning. The MindUP™ program comes to life by Teachers in the classroom through a 15 Lesson curriculm and framework, that provides comprehensive SEL skills and practices that benefit teachers and students alike.

MindUP™ teaches children about their brains and how it influences their thinking, emotions and behavior. The program introduces mindful practices that help prepare their minds to learn and encourages pro-social behavior like perspective taking, choosing optimism and gratitude — all of which support the development of a whole child that is more optimistic, focused and resilient.

MindUP™ is scientifically oriented, evidence based, CASEL approved and has a curriculum and framework published by Scholastic. The program of lessons and practices delivers big benefits for children, teachers, families and communities and can fundamentally change the climate of a school to encourage better scholastic performance and an environment where children can flourish.

I would encourage you to investigate this program yourself by going to their website www.mindup.org and checking out the area dedicated to school Principals. You may also want to reach out to [email protected], if you need any further information.
