If each ice block costs €1, how much does your igloo cost to build? An Eskimo would like to buy your igloo. You would like to make a profit. This means that you should sell your igloo for more than it cost you to build. How much will you sell your igloo for? Each block in your igloo will be completely melted in 1 week. How long will it take for the whole igloo to melt? (hint: this is a trick question!) Mission 2: CHEST OF TREASURE Steve has been investigating an abandoned mineshaft. He found a chest with 20 units of different ores. To help answer this question write a list on your paper with the following ores:

• Coal

• Gold ingots

• Diamonds

• Redstone

• Iron ingots Beside each item, write how many of it Steve found using the following information:

1. Remember, there are 20 units in the chest altogether! 2. He found 5 lumps of coal 3. He found 3 gold ingots 4. He found 4 less diamonds than coal. How many diamonds did he find? 5. He found twice as much redstone as gold. How much redstone did he find? 6. The rest of the loot was iron ingots. How many iron ingots did he find?

When you are finished, ask your instructor for the next level.

• 3 buckets of milk

• 1 egg

• 2 units of sugar

• 3 units of wheat. You will trade emeralds with a farmer villager and buy everything you need for the cakes.

• 1 bucket of milk costs 1 emerald.

• 1 egg costs 2 emeralds.

• 1 unit of sugar costs 1 emerald

• 1 unit of wheat costs 2 emeralds.

How many emeralds do you need to give the farmer? Mission 3: CAKES FOR A PARTY! You don’t need to build anything in Minecraft to complete this mission. You are baking cakes for a Minecraft party! A cake requires 3 buckets of milk, 1 egg, 2 units of sugar and 3 units of wheat to make. Each cake has 6 slices.

1. How many cakes can you make with 6 buckets of milk, 2 eggs, 4 units of sugar and 6 units of wheat?

2. You want to make 4 cakes, but you only have 6 buckets of milk. How many more buckets of milk will you have to get?

3. Finally, you make 4 cakes. Each cake has 6 slices. How many slices will you have altogether?

4. There are 9 villagers at your party (including yourself). How many slices of cake can each villager have if they all have an equal number of slices?

This means that you should place 30 blocks with a short distance between each. Steve and his friends will jump from block to block. Joe can finish the 30-block parkour course in 2 minutes. Trisha can finish it in 1 minute. They start the challenge at the same time.

1. Steve starts on top of the first block. Steve can go from one block to the next in 2 seconds and it also takes him 2 seconds to jump off the last block and cross the finish line. How long will it take Steve to reach the end of the course, assuming he never falls?

2. Trish also starts on top of the first block. Where will Trisha be when Steve will cross the

finish line?

3. On what block will Joe be when Trisha gets to the finish line?

Mission 2 OBSTACLE COURSE Now the friends would like to complete an obstacle course. At first, there are only three obstacles on the course. Build an obstacle course which contains the following items. Assume that each block measures 1metre long on all sides. A pool to jump over. The pool will have a length and a breadth and a height. The pool should be 3 blocks high, 3 blocks long, and 2 blocks breadth. Build this pool.

The second obstacle is a wall to climb over. The wall should be 6 blocks high and 4 blocks wide. Build the wall. The third obstacle will be a tunnel to crawl through. The tunnel should be 2 blocks high, 2 blocks breadth and 5 blocks in length. Build this tunnel.

1. Calculate the volume of the pool. To calculate volume, you must multiply length by breadth by height. Your answer should be in metres cubed or m3.

2. Calculate the area of one face of the wall. To calculate area, you must multiply length by height. Your answer should be in metres squared or m2.

3. If you were to fill the tunnel with water, what volume of water would you need to fill it? Your first answer should be in m3. Change this to litres. There are 1000l in 1m3. How many litres of water are needed to fill the tunnel?

4. If Steve measures 175cm and he falls into the pool, how many cm of water are above his head when he is standing?

If you are finished these challenges, please ask your instructor for the next level.

DIVISION IS when you break a number into groups or pieces.

Division can be written in many ways.

You have probably seen it written like this:

And this:

But can you think of another way to write a division problem? How about this:

A fraction is just another way to write DIVISION!

MISSION 1: BUILD AN ANIMAL ENCLOSURE

Your mission is to build an enclosure for some animals. To find out how many blocks to use, you must complete division problems. You can use any type of wood planks to build this animal home in Minecraft.

1. The enclosure will have 28÷7 walls. 2. Each wall must be 40/8 blocks tall. 3. Two opposite walls must be 75/5 blocks long. 4. The other walls must be 168÷6 blocks long. 5. You will need 6/6 windows and 8/4 doors.

Remember! A fraction bar is a division sign, too! 9/3 is the same as 9÷3 = 3.

MISSION 2: ANIMAL BUDGET Now you need to figure out how many animals you will put inside. You have a budget of €374 in total. You must spend €270 on sheep and the rest on pigs. Sheep cost €18 each and pigs are a bargain at €8 each. 1. Build a wall from wood planks to divide up the cage to keep the sheep and pigs apart. 2. Do the math: Figure out how many sheep you will purchase and how many pigs you will buy. (HINT: This is a long division mission! You’ll need to divide!) 3. Place your sheep and pigs in their new home. Adjust the cage divider wall as needed to ensure each type of animal has enough room. MISSION 3: Wheat Farm You don’t need to build anything in Minecraft to complete this mission. You are preparing bread for breakfast. To craft a loaf of bread you need 3 units of wheat. One unit of wheat grows on one block of farmland.

1. You have a rectangular wheat farm with 5 blocks width and 6 blocks length. If all wheat

on the farm has already matured, how many loaves of bread can you make?

2. If only 40% of the wheat on your farm has fully matured, how many loaves of bread can

you make?

3. There are 8 people in your family (including yourself). At least how big should your

wheat farm be to feed each family member 1 bread loaf every day if only half of the

wheat on the farm matures every day?

IF YOU HAVE FINISHED, PLEASE ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR FOR LEVEL 4B or 5B.

Teachers Only! Level 1B, Q5: The towers could be measured in numbers of blocks, for example. Each tower could be a certain number of blocks high. Alternatively, a unit of measurement could be applied to each block, e.g.1m. Level 2B, How long will it take the igloo to melt? 1 week, as each block will melt at the same time. Level 3B, Mission 1. For the number 345, there will be a stack of 3 yellow blocks, then a stack of 4 red blocks, then a stack of 5 blue blocks. Level 4B Mission 3. There are 10 characters altogether.

1. 2/10 = 1/5 creepers 2. 4/10 = 2/5 skeletons 3. 5/10 = ½ zombies

Mission 4 1. 24 diamonds in 4 chests. There are 4 characters. If each character gets 5 diamonds, then that is 20 so

there are 4 leftover. 2. 12 diamonds in 2 chests. 4 characters so 3 diamonds each. 3. Steve got 9 and the others got 21 so 30 diamonds in total, meaning 5 chests.

Level 5B Mission 1, parkour course

1. 60 2. She will also be crossing the finish line as she can complete the course in 1 minute. 3. It takes Joe twice as long to finish the course. Therefore, he will be on block 16, if he starts on top of

the first block. Mission 2, obstacle course 1. 18 m3 2. 24 m2. 3. 20 m3. 20,000l 4. Pool is 3 blocks high = 3m = 300cm. 125cm water over Steves head.

Level 6B Mission 2: Animal Budget, Q2: 15sheep and 13 pigs. Mission 3: Wheat Farm:

1. Total area of farm is 30 blocks, meaning a total of 30 units of wheat. 10 loaves of bread can be made. 2. 10% of 30 is 3, 40% of 30 is 12. 12 units of wheat available to make 4 loaves of bread. 3. 8 loaves of bread required per day. 24 units of wheat required to make the 8 loaves. 24 units of wheat

need to mature each day, there fore the farm needs to have an area of 48 blocks.
