The Senior Project requires students to complete each of the following P’s: PAPER PROJECT PORTFOLIO PRESENTATION HSTW (High Schools That Work) KEY PRACTICES FOR IMPROVING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

High expectations – The Senior Project encourages students to have high expectations of themselves, to focus on their performance in high school, and to make the best of their education in order to prepare for college or a career.

Programs of study – The Senior Project helps students focus on high school being a preparation for the world of work, rather than just a requirement without any focus.

Academic studies – The Senior Project allows

students to focus on identifying their strengths (identified in VITA and the SCANS Essay) in order to better prepare for post secondary education for their chosen career.

Career/technical studies – The Senior Project allows

vocational students an opportunity to communicate their performance and prepare for job interviews with solid knowledge about themselves and their chosen career.

Work-based learning – The Senior Project allows

students to focus on various work-based learning, as seen in their resumes, reference letters, VITA, and Goals Essay. This better prepares them for a job interview when asked what experiences they have had to prepare them for a particular job.

Teachers working together – The Senior Project becomes a project that all English teachers and vocational teachers help students complete, as well as all other teachers in gathering “Work Samples” which can be displayed in the portfolio. Guidance and mentoring is provided during the Product aspect of the project.

Students actively engaged – The Senior Project keeps students actively engaged in using writing real documents for real audiences, and documents which are life-long models for future job interviews.

Guidance - The Senior Project allows students to

explore, with guidance, various careers, specifically their chosen career field. Students are assisted with setting goals and selecting courses. The student’s progress is reviewed and appropriate interventions are suggested if necessary.

Extra help – The Senior Project provides extra help

to our students in preparing them for post secondary education for a specific career field, as well as providing them extra help in the interviewing process by having information gathered that will assist them in their resume and job application process.

Keeping score – The Senior Project is a mandated

activity in our county. By having our students complete this common activity, we provide our students with real opportunities for better job training, job applications, and job interviews.

Mineral County wants to create a life-long learner who knows how to access

information, how to use reading, writing, and thinking skills, and how to be

proficient with the use of technology.

VISUAL PRESENTATIONS

1. KISS - Keep it short and simple. Too much writing is a frequent mistake!

2. Use phrases with bullets

3. Follow the 666 rule: a. No more than 6 words per bullet b. No more than 6 bullets per page c. No more than 6 word slides in a row

4. Keep everything parallel, including fonts, colors, and format

5. Make only one point per visual

6. Use serif fonts (serif fonts have “feet” at the ends of letters, like Times New Roman)

7. Avoid bold and italics which become difficult to read

8. Use the same color throughout to highlight important points

9. Make sure the fonts you choose are loaded on the computer that you use for the presentation; otherwise, you may have an unpleasant surprise

10. Use cool colors for backgrounds (blues/greens)

11. Be sure the text color stands out against the background for easy reading. Avoid using red on green. Note: 10% of men are color blind!

12. Use pictures or images whenever possible to add lots of interest

13. Place images on top two-thirds of the slide

14. Whenever you use a photo, you need brief text with it. Don’t use pictures alone!

15. If you enlarge a photo or other images, be sure to keep it in proportion. Ask for help if you do not know how to enlarge an image correctly

16. Use a pointer or pen if you plan to point to the screen; don’t use your finger

17. Talk directly to the audience, not to the screen

18. Grammar and spelling mistakes is inexcusable! (Irritating, ain’t it?)

19. Never, never, never read from the screen. Your audience is not illiterate, so don’t insult them!

20. Put six slides per page on the printout. Put the printout in your portfolio

19.

Smile!

Stand up straight

Know the content of your speech so well that you use your notes only as prompts

Leave your notes on the podium (even if your hands shake – no one will notice!)

Speak slowly. Be proud of all you have accomplished

Moderate the pitch of your voice. Speak loud enough to be heard, and vary your inflection and tone

Relax! Enjoy this. You worked hard!

We Taught You Better – and Eveyone Knows It . . .

Avoid fillers such as “um”, “you know”, “like”, etc.

Do not slouch!

Let go of that death grip on the podium

Avoid all nervous habits, such as fidgeting , squirming, playing with your hair or face

Take your hands out of your pockets

Don’t fold your arms either – use your hands to gesture effectively

Don’t read your notes word for word

Take the gum out of your mouth before you get to school

Dress appropriately (business attire or Sunday best)

Reminders:

Use 3. 5 index cards for your notes, and number them according to the order of your speech. You may be asked to turn in your cards.

Avoid handling anything, including papers, during your speech
