GENERAL INFORMATIONThe Ruger MINI-14 Rifle is a gas operated, box magazine fed, semi-

automatic firearm designed and manufactured in Ruger factories in the U-S_A.and based on the Ruger fixed piston/mobile cylinder gas operating system. Itis chambered for .223 (5.56mm) U.S. military and commercial cartridges.

Compact, simple and reliable, the mechanism is composed of relativelyfew, extremely rugged components. The stock, the barrel and the magazineconstitute the major wr-ight of the MINI-14. Its breech and firing mechanismsare held to a minimum in size and weight by the efficient use of hardenedchrome-molybdenum steels. Music wire coil springs are used throughout themechanism to insure reliability under field operating conditions.

The gas system is a fixed piston, moving cylinder, self-cleansing design.Unburned powder particles are automatically vented from the system. Thefiring pin is retracted mechanically during the first part of the unlocking ofthe bolt. TIH' arm can only be fired when the bolt is safely locked. Althoughit resembles several C.S. Military Standard arms in outward appearance, themechanism and operating characteristics of the MINI-I4 are unique, there-fore. careful study must Lt' given to the operating and maintenance instruc-tions which art' contained in this manual.

The MINI-l4 conforms to basic HUI!;{'rprinciples of design and construc-tion throughout. Light w{'ight and great strength is achieved by innovativeengint'ering and the US{' of the finf'st available materials. Every componentpart of the l\lIl\'I- H is built far better and stronger than it need be.

AMMUNITIONThe MINI-H is designed to usc either U. S. Military, Commercial Sport-

ing, or other .22:) (5.56mm) caliber ammunition manufactured to U. S. indus-try standards.

SAFETY MECHANISMNEEDLESS TO SAY:Never aim at anything which you do not wish to shoot. Always keep themuzzle pointing in a safe direction. Be sure of your backstop or direction offire before shooting.

The manual safety mechanism is located forward of the trigger as illus-trated in "A" above. The safety can be moved to "On" only when the hammeris cocked. When the safety is in the "On" position, it blocks hath the hammerand the sear. Although the safety is properly designed and fitted, never dependon it, or any mechanical device, to justify unsafe handling or pointing of thefirearm.BOLT HOLD OPEN LATCH

The MINI14 is equipped with a Bolt Hold Open mechanism which auto-matically engages to hold the bolt and slide to the rear when the last cartridgehas been fired or whenever the slide is cycled while an empty magazine is inplace.

WARNING: Unless an empty magazine is in place, the Bolt Hold OpenLatch will be automatically released by any rearward motion of the slide.Should the carbine be dropped or strongly jarred with the Bolt Hold Openengaged and a charged magazine in place, the ~Iide may be releasr-d and willthen go forward, chambering a cartridge.

To release the slide either:1. Remove the empty magazine, then draw the cocking handle to the rear

and release or,2. Draw the cocking handle fully to the rear, then depress the forward end

is stopped by the latch.LOADING THE MAGAZINE

Use only ammunition of the proper caliber, in good condition and madeby a reputable manufacturer.

TIH' magazine is of staggered column double row design. To load themagazine simply align the cartridge with tlu- built'! pointing towards the holein the front of tlu- magazine body and push downwards until the cartridgesnaps into place. Do not attempt to load mor than the designed number ofcartridges.

If feed problems are experienced due to improper bullet construction,loading one or two cartridges less than tilt' full maguzine rapacity will Ire-quently allow the cartridges to ked.

forward under spring pressure. A cartridge will be stripped from the maga-zine and chambered by the forward motion of the bolt.

TIll' riAe will now fi rr- one shot for !'aeh pull of the trigger until themagazine is exhausted. Wh'n the last cartridge is Iired, the bolt hold openlatch will automatically engage holding the bolt and the slide open.

To unload the rifle, put the Safety in the "On" position; remove the maga-zinc and pull the slide handle entirely to the rear extracting and ejecting thechambered cartridge.

SIGHT AD JUSTMENTGENEHAL : TIlt' .223 IS.S6mm) cartridge used by the MINI-14 has a vt'ry

flat trajectory. Cenerally, if the rifle is sighted in to hit the point of aim ata distance of 200 yards, no change in point of aim or sight adjustment is re-quired to keep within a 9" circle at all ranges from 0-300 yards.

REAB SIGHT: Till' rr-a r sight is adjustable for both windage and ele-vation. The point of a bull ... can be used to depress the lock plunger allowing

the adjustment to be moved I/~urn in either direction. A I A turn will movethe point of impact 1.5" at 100 yards. The sight adjustment has been madedeliberately positive so that it cannot under normal circumstances be acciden-tally disturbed.

W INDAGE ADJUSTMENT

To move impact to the right - turn adjustment counterclockwise.To move impact to the left - turn adjustment clockwise.

ELEVATION AD JUSTMENT

To raise impact-turn adjustmentcounterclockwise.

To lower impact -turn adjustmentclockwise.

FIELD STRIPPING AND REASSEMBLYThe Ruger MINI-14 can be field stripped to its basic subassemblies in

less than 30 seconds. Reassembly is just as simple and rapid.No tools are required to accomplish field stripping. A cartridge can beused to unlatch the spring steel trigger guard.

A careful reading of the illustrated instructions which follow will be morethan repaid by the ease with which you will be able to maintain your MINI-H.

FIELD STRIPPING

1. Remove magazine (Fig. C).

2. Pull cocking handle entirely to rearand release. Put Saft'ty"On", (Fig.D).(Note: Hammer must be cocked andSafety must be "On" to accomplish dis-assemhly and reassemhly).

3. Using a cartridge or other suitabletool, spring open trigger guard latch(Fig. E).

5. Remove Barrel/receiver assemblyfrom stock (Fig. G).

6. Remove Recoil spring guide and re-coil spring (Fig. Hi and 2). Caution:Mainspring is heavily compressed -Use care while disassembling or reas-sembling to prevent mainspring assern-bly from escaping and possibly causinginjury.

7. Pull slide handle to the rear. Alignlocking projections on slide with dis-assembly notch on receiver. Removeslide (Fig. I).

8. Pull the bolt forward until it pivotsout of the receiver. Align firing pin pro-jection with slot in lower receiverbridge. Hemove bolt (Fig. J).

Further disassembly should not be re-quiri-d and i,not n-commcndcd unlessperformed by competent pf'r~ons ex-perienced in gun;;mithing.

REASSEMBLYReassembly is accomplished by reversing the steps outlined above. Note

that the hamrru-r mu-t be cocked and the Safety must be "On",

CARE AND CLEANINGAlways check to be sun' rifle is unloaded before handling.1. Field strip rifle.2. To clean the hore and chamber, wipe out powder residue with a clean

cloth patch, saturated with a recognized brand of powder solvent and followthe manufacturer's directions. The bore and chamber should then be wipedclean and a vcry light film of oil applied to prevent rust.(Note: Only a VI'ry small amount of oil is required to provide adequate lubri-cation of moving part, and prevent rust. An excess of oil (or any solid obstruc-tion) in the bore lIlay cause damage to this or any other firearm.)

3, Using powder solvent, remove powder residue from all components ofthe mechanism including the cylindrical chamber in the front of the slide, thefixed gas piston and the inside steel liner of the forearm, Lightly oil all com-ponents as noted above.

4. It will do no harm to apply a small drop of oil at all pivot points andto the bolt roller.

5, Reassemble tlIP rilh-.PERIODIC MAINTENANCE - The design of the MINI-ltl- provides

unequalled ease of maintenance.At regular interval, or when tlu- rille has her-n exposed to sand, dust,

extreme humidity or other adverse conditions, disassemble it and clean andoil as outlined above.

Take advantage of th rapid fit'ld stripping procedure to ensure that yourMINI-l4 will always hp n-ady when you need it.

SERVICE POLICYBefore shipment every Ruger firearm is carefully inspected and test-fired

in order to prove that it is in perfect condition and conforms fully to ourspecifications and standards. If there is any question with regard to the per-formance of the rifle, please write to our Service Department, fully describ-ing all circumstances and conditions involved.
