Dance Palace Camp (for ages 6–12) focuses on creativity and imagination with hands-on, fun activities that foster the development of friendships and social skills. With our low camper-to-staff ratio (7:1) we can provide caring, personal attention to all campers and their families. The Camp offers adventures and activities including sports, art, ceramics, circus fun, outdoor adventures, crafts, cooking, theater, music and dance, and special theme days. Dance Palace Camp was voted Best Summer Camp in Marin in the 2011 North Bay Bohemian readers’ poll!

Staff members are skilled, local professionals with extensive experience working with children and are assisted by teen counselors in all activities. Camp Director, Vickisa Feinberg is a professional artist who has taught Visual Arts at schools throughout the Bay Area. She is a credentialed Emergency Medical Technician, volunteer firefighter, and art teacher. The staff includes Colleen Conley, Director of the Counselor-in-Training Program; Cheri Leierer, who leads Outdoor Adventures, Nature Arts, and various games. Carol Friedman leads Dance, Motion and Games; the Dance Palace’s own Burton Eubank will teach games and circus skills.

The Counselor-in-Training Program (CITP) offers boys and girls ages 13 to

15 leadership training, team building, problem solving, recreational activities, and learning the skills necessary to be a counselor or babysitter. CITs learn about all aspects of camp counseling. The program will include first-aid/CPR training, art projects, and an all-day naturalist-led kayaking excursion. Successful completion of the CITP will enable participants to apply for paid Assistant Counselor positions in the future.

Brochures are available at the Dance Palace or online at www.dancepalace.org. Scholarships for campers are made possible through grants and community contributions. For information and registration, contact 663-1075, or email [email protected] or visit our website www.dancepalace.org.

Here’s what campers and their parents have to say about Dance Palace Camp:

“I like Dance Palace Camp for the traditions....like grandparents’ day, ice cream and going to the park!” - Elias Spanier.

“The Dance Palace Camp is the greatest because of the loving, fun staff and the exciting, creative programs”. -Connie Mery

“As a parent I know when I drop her off in the morning she is in a safe, fun, nurturing environment”. - Caren Gately

Pirates of Penzance

One of the most successful musical comedies of all time sails into the Dance Palace – July 19, 20 and 21.

To call The Pirates of Penzance a hit show for all time is hitting the show business nail right on the head. It was a sensation when it opened in 1879 and audiences love it today, 134 years later!

The inspired music by Arthur Sullivan and the libretto by W.S. Gilbert was this famous duo’s fifth collaboration. British to the core, surprisingly Pirates opened in New York City on New Year’s Eve. Why New York City? Gilbert and Sullivan hoped to establish a copyright for their musical in the United States, so the show wouldn’t have pirated productions!

The London debut was in April of 1880, where it ran for 363 performances. The show has been produced by opera com-panies and repertory houses worldwide. And, of course, terrific groups such as the West Marin Players.

In 1981, Joseph Papp produced Pirates for Broadway which ran for an incredible 787 performances, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. It was such a hit that the show was made into a major movie, starring Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury and Linda Ronstadt.

For this West Marin Player’s production, Susie Stitt has assembled an (ahem) equally star-studded cast. Stephen Horvath is the Pirate King; Casey Glick, Marney Margules and Pav Wilkenson, have starring roles as they did in last year’s sold-out production of The Mikado. Other cast members include Laura Marcoux, Terry Shea and Yenny McKenna.Behind the scenes Deborah Benedict is the music director and the production team includes Ameris Blagbourne, Sally Torrance, Judith Ciani, Michael Heaton, Britt Stitt and Ed Schwartz.

Mark Pirates of Penzance on your July calendar in black, permanent ink!
