01 CONCEPT & USPSDESIGN

SPORTS ACTIVITY COUPé Although it's based on the MINI Countryman concept, the MINI Paceman has a personality all of its own. Unlike the MINI Countryman, the MINI Paceman hastwo large coupé doors that underscore the sporty, elegant character of this four-seater. 4.11 metres in length, it cuts a sleek yet powerful figure on the streetthanks to its long wheelbase, short overhangs, muscular wheel arches and a back-slanting roofline that's around four centimetres lower than on the MINICountryman. The rear is equally striking and distinctive, with large tail lights – aligned horizontally for the first time – and the eye-catching Paceman letteringon the tailgate.

02 EXTERIOR FEATURESLOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

The MINI Paceman is one of a kind: more dynamic, elegant and powerful than any other model in the MINI range. Particularly eye-catching are the roofline, which is 4.3 centimetres lower than any other model and slopes gently backward, and the coupé profile with its strong, robust rear. However, the definingMINI features are all still present: the long wheelbase, short overhangs and classic lines denoting a pedigree that stretches all the way back to the Classic Mini.

PURE ELEGANCEThe unique crossover coupé status of the MINI Paceman is emphasized by its striking, authoritative coupé profile. The roofline is 4.3 centimetres lower than onany other model, giving it a sporty, elegant appearance. The mounted roof slopes away gently towards the strong, robust rear. This heightens the impact ofthe elegant profile with its large coupé doors and flared wheel arches.

02 EXTERIOR FEATURESROOF

BREATHTAKING CURVESAvailable either in Jet Black or in Light White, the mounted roof is one of the most eye-catching design elements on the MINI Paceman. It underscores thecar's coupé features, sloping away towards the robust rear and equally solid tailgate.

ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELLFinished in the same colour as the roof, the two rear spoiler variants for the MINI Cooper/Cooper D Paceman and the MINI Cooper S/SD Paceman emphasizethe sporty stylings, making the roof appear longer at the rear and improving aerodynamics. Both spoiler variants ensure optimum air flow around the car, andimprove road holding at high speeds by increasing the downforce.

02 EXTERIOR FEATURESTAILGATE

STYLISH AND PRACTICALThe tailgate is a key element of the striking rear profile of the MINI Paceman – a broad, robust finale to the sporty lines of this crossover coupé. It bears thelegend "Paceman", an unmistakable visual calling card in big, bold letters. Once opened, it provides access to a luggage area with a capacity of between 330and 1,080 litres.

03 INTERIOR FEATURESTHE 2+2 LOUNGE

The interior of the MINI Paceman is every bit as stylish and striking as its exterior. The front seats are as comfortable as you'd expect in a MINI. And in the rear, the MINI Paceman also features a unique "lounge" concept with two specially moulded individual seats.

THE ULTIMATE IN COMFORTThe MINI Paceman is not one to make idle promises. It provides four comfortable individual seats for four occupants. As well as being strikingly stylish, the twoindividual lounge seats in the rear are exceptionally comfortable on long journeys. Just what you would expect from the SAC-Sports Activity Coupé experience– but which you find in few cars of this class.

03 INTERIOR FEATURESSEATS

4 X 1The MINI Paceman offers a unique seating concept consisting of four individual seats, which no car in its class can match. The front seats are highly adjustable,as well as being contoured to provide comfortable thigh support. Perfect when you're feeling the need for speed.

KICK BACK AND RELAXThe two individual rear seats in the MINI Paceman give the car the look and feel of a comfortable lounge – so much so that once seated, passengers simplywon't want to get out again. That might seem unusual in a vehicle that's just 4.11 metres long, but the intelligent interior concept of the MINI Paceman shinesonce again, continuing a long-standing MINI tradition.

03 INTERIOR FEATURESCENTER RAIL

PRACTICAL SOPHISTICATIONLiving up to its name, the centre of attention in the interior of the MINI Paceman is the Center Rail. This distinctive aluminium console is fitted as standard as atwo-piece unit, with the option of a single, full-length unit. It allows the driver and passengers to clip on modules like cupholders, mobile phone holders andother accessories and position them as required. And once darkness falls, the Center Rail also offers a variety of illumination settings.

STEERING WHEEL & INSTRUMENTS

GRIPPING STUFFThe steering wheel and instruments form a driver’s interface with their car. No matter which steering wheel they've opted for, MINI Paceman drivers alwayshave a firm grip on the situation, plus, of course, a clear view of instruments behind the non-slip wheel, such as the revolution counter and the multifunctiondisplay for calling up all the key information from the on-board computer and the gearshift. The interior also features a genuine style icon in the form of thelarge central speedometer in the middle of the dashboard. Along with the current speed, this also provides a range of other information including detailsabout whether seatbelts are fastened, fog lights, cruise control and fuel levels – bringing the legend of the classic Mini right up to date. The lower section of thespeedometer also includes the operating modules and easy-to-read digital display for the radio and sound system.

DETAILS: STEERING WHEELS

Two-spoke steering wheel: The MINI Cooper Paceman comes with a two-spoke steering wheel fitted as standard. A furthervisual highlight is the wide chrome ring, which complements the interior perfectly. The impactcasing also contains the driver’s airbag.

Three-spoke sports leather steering wheel: The three-spoke sports leather steering wheel in the MINI Cooper S Paceman is particularly elegantand sporty. It is as handy when parking in a tight space as it is when tackling corners. The driverremains in complete control at all times. The horn is activated via the central impact absorber. Theleather gear lever knob or selector lever grip also match the colouring of the stylish three-spokesports leather steering wheel.

Three-spoke sports leather steering wheel with multifunction option: The three-spoke sports leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons is particularly practical. This allows drivers to use two round operating elements on the spokes to operate functions theyuse particularly frequently, such as cruise control, voice control and the radio and sound system.Practicality goes hand in hand with safety here, allowing drivers to keep a firm grip on the wheel atall times. The controls for the radio and phone are on the left-hand side, while those for the cruisecontrol are on the right-hand side of the wheel. Cruise control operates from 30 km/h. And in carsfeaturing the automatic transmission option, the steering wheel also includes paddles that let thedriver control gear shifts manually.

DETAILS: CONSOLE, ROOFTOP CONSOLE, AMBIENT LIGHTING

Console: Just as stylish as the central speedometer for style in the MINI Paceman is the retro toggle bar withlevers in the centre console, used for controlling features like the fog lights and central locking.

Rooftop console:A second control console is located above the rear-view mirror in the roof. This can be used forswitching the reading lights on and off, and also for adjusting the brightness and Ambient Lighting(up to 756 colours).

Ambient Lighting: The Ambient Lighting perfectly complements the interior of the Paceman with its "lounge"atmosphere, including inner lighting in the B-pillar, the door panels and the Center Rail.

MAKING DRIVING AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE. Mission Control, MINIMALISM Analyser and Dynamic Music provide a whole new angle on a journey in the MINI Roadster. Mission Control gives driversfeedback on their driving style, analyses their performance data and supplies information relevant to the current situation. There are around 1,800 differentpre-recorded comments on the system. The MINIMALISM Analyser encourages efficient, environmentally friendly driving. Drivers are awarded stars forfuel-efficient gear changes, acceleration and braking, and score points for the overall economy of their driving. The MINI Connected iPhone app can performan analysis of any journey. It’s fun, but it also makes a serious point about saving fuel. Dynamic Music includes a selection of specially recorded tracks, whichadjust to how the car is being driven. If it goes faster, the BPM speeds up and more instruments come in; if it goes slower, the tempo of the music drops andthe instrumentation becomes sparser. So drivers create a soundtrack that reflects their driving style, further strengthening their emotional bond with the car.

Mission Control¹Provides amusing and useful information based on the information from the vehicle’s sensors. TheMINI Roadster is loaded with around 1,800 pre-recorded messages, telling the driver about thestatus of the vehicle (e.g. if there’s a door open, how full the tank is, if the engine is warmed up, or ifsomeone has their seatbelt undone) and training them in sustainable driving techniques. It’s a lot offun, but also serves a useful purpose.

PAGE 27 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

MINIMALISM Analyser¹Rewards fuel-efficient driving by giving drivers stars and points, shown on the vehicle display. Ananimated picture of a goldfish in a bowl urges them on to achieve the next level of MINIMALISMdriving. Every journey can be analysed in detail afterwards, using the MINI Connected app, and theresults shared online with other members of the MINI Connected community. In this way, economical driving is rewarded and encouraged.

Dynamic MusicMusic that adapts to the current driving style – chilled out for leisurely cruising, more aggressivebeats when the car is pushed harder. The adjustments are made based on measurements oflongitudinal and lateral acceleration. This uniquely personal soundtrack creates an even closeremotional bond between car and driver. Dynamic Music currently includes 10 music tracks.

¹Please note that on MINI models (manufactured from March 2011 onwards) fitted with the optional Bluetooth mobile phone preparation with USB audiointerface (option 6NE), the Mission Control and MINIMALISM Analyser functions are currently only accessible when the iPhone is connected using the optionalsnap-in adapter.

05 INFOTAINMENTBLUETOOTH

TWO BLUETOOTH FUNCTIONS WITH USB AUDIO INTERFACE.The optional Bluetooth hands-free kit with USB audio interface enables MINI drivers to make and receive phone calls without taking their hands off the wheel. The system is operated via the multifunction steering wheel, the radio controls, the MINI joystick or voice control. This option is included as standard with theRadio Visual Boost and MINI navigation system.

With the optional Bluetooth mobile phone preparation with USB audio interface, a Bluetooth-enabled mobile can be plugged in to a slot in the armrest using asnap-in adapter (available separately). This charges its battery, and connects it to the vehicle aerial for improved reception. Where the Radio MINI Visual Boostor MINI navigation system is also fitted, an array of smartphone functions can be used in-car and operated safely and conveniently via the radio system.

ALWAYS UP TO DATE WITH KEY VEHICLE INFORMATION. The optional on-board computer provides key data about your journey at the touch of a button: average and current fuel consumption, range and averagespeed. The figures are shown in a display in the revolution counter or, where the Radio MINI Visual Boost is fitted, on its large monitor. Where the MINInavigation system is also specified, the following additional information is accessible: journey start time, journey time, trip distance, ETA, and average fuelconsumption and speed for individual segments of the journey.

06 MINIMALISMLESS IS MORE

The MINI Paceman is a sporty, dynamic car – but it’s right up there with the front runners when it comes to fuel economy too. All MINI Paceman, models, whether fitted with petrol or diesel engines, include fuel-saving technologies that help their drivers minimize consumption, such as Brake EnergyRegeneration, the Automatic Start/Stop function and a Shift Point Display. Fuel consumption is further reduced by added technical flourishes like the LED rearlights, or electric assisted steering that only uses energy when the driver is actually steering.

06 MINIMALISMAUTOMATIC START/STOP FUNCTION

SHEER EFFICIENCYThe Automatic Start/Stop function comes as standard with all MINI Paceman, models (except models with automatic transmission). It makes sure the engineonly runs when needed. So when the MINI Paceman, stops at a red light or in a traffic jam, the engine switches off, gently and almost silently. And when thedriver depresses the clutch and puts the car into gear, the engine automatically switches on again in a matter of milliseconds – so the journey can continuewithout delay. To protect the battery, the Automatic Start/Stop function won’t work when the battery is running low or when the exterior temperature dropsbelow 3 degrees Celsius.

BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION

BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION Each time the driver brakes, the MINI Paceman, receives an extra dividend in the form of pure energy. Instead of letting the brake discs convert the drivingmomentum into heat – which is then, by and large, wasted – the kinetic energy is captured and transformed into electricity for the vehicle to use. So wheneverthe brakes are engaged, the battery is automatically recharged, therefore helping to minimize fuel consumption.

06 MINIMALISMSHIFT POINT DISPLAY

THE CAR HELPING DRIVERS TO BE MORE ECONOMICALIn vehicles with manual transmission, the digital display under the revolution counter includes a Shift Point Display. This advises the MINI Paceman, driverwhich gear to use in order to drive well and economically. Switching up a gear at an early stage can significantly reduce fuel consumption in everyday driving. And the Shift Point Display also indicates when the driver should shift back down.

07 DRIVING FUNDYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

A MINI Paceman is a car with sporting genes, combining striking styling, a dynamic drive train and a particularly low centre of gravity with precise andinvolving feedback from the road. Drivers enjoy immediate throttle responses and fast, responsive direct steering. It handles even the tightest cornersbeautifully, without any body dive or roll – for unparalleled driving enjoyment. The gears shift smartly, the brakes are firm and authoritative, and the enginenote is full-bodied, but never intrusive. The overall result: the sporty, effortless performance that’s a key characteristic of every member of the MINI family.

07 DRIVING FUN

PAGE 31 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

THAT GO-CART FEELING

THAT GO-CART FEELING The low centre of gravity, long wheelbase and short overhangs are what gives the MINI Paceman the authentic feel of a go-cart. The tyres are kept as near aspossible to the corners of the bodywork, eliminating body dive and roll.

BODYWORK: Like any other MINI, the MINI Paceman features the robust, high-strength bodywork that's a must for a dynamic driving experience, delivering sheerenjoyment while minimizing vibration inside the vehicle.

LOW CENTRE OF GRAVITY: In any car, a low centre of gravity is essential for high cornering speeds and minimal body dive and roll. Being a crossover, the MINI Paceman – just like itsclose relative, the MINI Countryman – has an unusually low centre of gravity. A feature that pays off in every corner, boosting cornering speed and ensuringmaximum safety into the bargain, even when driving at the limit.

LOWER WEIGHT-TO-POWER RATIO: It takes more than just engine power to make a sports car. Which is why, along with a variety of extremely efficient and powerful engines, the MINI Paceman isalso remarkably light. And that means each kilowatt and each unit of horsepower has less weight to carry – for a truly sporty and dynamic drive.

07 DRIVING FUNSUSPENSION & BRAKES

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAIL

PAGE 32 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

Without superb suspension and crisp, powerful brakes, the MINI Paceman would not be a true MINI. It features independent suspension with MacPhersonstruts at the front combined with a sophisticated multi-link rear axle. This is a combination which guarantees sheer driving pleasure. The MINI Paceman isfitted as standard with a sporty chassis featuring a ten-millimetre lower body, though there is also the option of a chassis without a lower body. The brakingsystem is vigorous and authoritative, even when subjected to repeat braking, giving the driver an exceptional amount of control.

Suspension: The sporty yet comfortable suspension gives the MINI Paceman excellent roadholding. Themultiple-control-arm rear axle ensures that the tyres maintain ground contact even on bumpysurfaces and in fast corners. With sports suspension fitted as standard, drivers get the perfectbalance of involving feedback from the road without an unduly bumpy ride. The single-jointspring-strut front axle is responsible for the excellent cornering under acceleration. And despite thefront-wheel drive layout, the drive train hardly interferes with the steering at all, due to the car’stwo equal-length drive shafts.

Brakes: The brake system is one of the best technical features of the MINI Paceman. Four disc brakes(internally ventilated at the front) with hard-biting calipers deliver very short stopping distances. Thepetrol versions of the MINI Paceman have 307 x 24 mm and 280 x 10 mm discs at the front andrear respectively, while the diesel versions feature 294 x 22 mm discs at the front. Meanwhile, electronic aids like the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with brake assist, Cornering Brake Control(CBC) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution ensure the car stays under control even underemergency braking.

Fade resistance: A fade-free brake system is crucial to getting the most out of a sports car. For this reason, the MINIPaceman has generously sized disc brakes all round, with optimized heat dissipation to ensureunimpeded performance even during heavy use. The MINI Cooper S Paceman comes with a 16-inchbraking system as standard, with front discs that are 307 x 24 mm in size.

07 DRIVING FUNSTEERING

STREETWISE

PAGE 33 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

The direct connection to a car's spirit is its steering wheel. Very few other cars in this class feature steering that lets drivers feel the road as clearly as thesteering in the MINI Paceman does. It provides first-rate feedback, for driving that's both dynamic and relaxed. And the electric servo-assisted steering in theMINI Paceman only uses energy when the driver is actually steering, helping to reduce fuel consumption.

EPAS:The rack-and-pinion steering of the MINI Paceman is the key to its sporty feel and detailedfeedback for the driver. The electric power assist makes steering light yet still totally involving. Theoptional Sport button makes responses even more direct.

Electronic Steering:The Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) is speed-dependent – it’s lighter at low speeds andstiffer at high speeds, for ease of control at all times. And for maximum manoeuvrability aroundtown, it’s only 2.4 turns from full lock to full lock.

08 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSIONALL BASES COVERED

The MINI Paceman is available with a wide range of engines from 112 to 184 horsepower – so for every customer, there’s just the right MINI Paceman. Fueleconomy is a recurring theme here – and not just among the diesel models, either. And for anyone hankering for a truly sporty drive, the petrol and dieselversions of the Cooper S Paceman and Cooper SD Paceman, offer 184 and 143 horsepower respectively.

08 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSIONPETROL

POWERFUL AND ECONOMICAL

PAGE 34 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

The MINI Paceman is available with a choice of Cooper or Cooper S engines, providing an output that ranges from 90 kilowatts/122 horsepower to 135kilowatts/184 horsepower. Every customer will find just the right car for them, whether they want to combine economy with dynamism (MINI CooperPaceman) or they are looking for something sportier (MINI Cooper S Paceman). All models offer strikingly low fuel consumption and – irrespective of theengine chosen – a highly enjoyable driving experience. Petrol-engine MINI models have a 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit with four valves per cylinder and fullyvariable valve timing. Valve lift can be steplessly adjusted for both intake and exhaust valves. That means the valves open less when the car is coasting, andmore when it is accelerating fast, so the cylinders get more air. The result is excellent responses at all engine speeds. And for maximum efficiency, the fuelover-run cut-off point operates below 1,000 rpm.

POWER IN MOTIONFor those looking for dynamic performance, the MINI Cooper Paceman is just the right car. Its 1.6-litre direct fuel injection engine delivers 90 kilowatts/122horsepower at 6,000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 160 newton-metres from 4,250 rpm. And with an unladen weight of just 1,360 kilograms, the MINICooper Countryman is exceptionally light. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds, and boasts a top speed of 192 km/h. This excellent performanceis combined with typical MINI-style economy: over the combined cycle it consumes just 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres. Drivers can also choose between usingthe crisp six-speed manual gearbox for gear changes or leaving all the work to the smooth six-speed automatic transmission. With the automatic transmission, fuel consumption rises to 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres, and the top speed is 184 km/h.

THE SPORTING LIFEThe 1,360-kilogram MINI Cooper S Paceman is a sports car through and through. Thanks to a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve timing, its 1.6-litrepetrol engine is capable of a stunning 135 kilowatts/184 horsepower. This makes it a snappy little number from the word go, even at lower revs. Withoverboost, the maximum torque temporarily increases from 240 newton-metres at 1,600-5,000 rpm to up to 260 newton-metres. Which means the all-wheeldrive model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. The top speed is 217 km/h. But for all its sporty performance, the MINI Cooper S Paceman usesjust 6.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. Drivers can choose between using the crisp six-speed manual gearbox for gear changes or leaving all the work to thesmooth six-speed automatic transmission. With the automatic transmission, combined-cycle fuel consumption rises to 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres, and thetop speed is 212 km/h. The MINI Cooper S Paceman is available with or without ALL4 all-wheel drive.

08 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSIONDIESEL

ENJOYMENT WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCEFitted with a diesel engine, the MINI Paceman becomes especially economical. The output of the 1.6- and 2.0-litre engines in the MINI Cooper D Paceman andMINI Cooper SD Paceman ranges from 82 kilowatts/112 horsepower to 105 kilowatts/143 horsepower – for a driving experience that’s fuel-efficient, yet highlydynamic.

POWERFUL RESPONSESFor speed and economy, the 82-kilowatt/112-horsepower MINI Cooper D Paceman is just right. Its high-revving, smooth-running diesel engine makes itextremely enjoyable to drive, with a performance that will impress even the more ambitious driver. And the maximum torque of 270 newton-metres isavailable from just 1,750 rpm. At just 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres, its low consumption belies its top speed of 187 km/h. It weighs in at 1,360 kilograms andcan accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.8 seconds. Drivers can choose between using the crisp six-speed manual gearbox for gear changes or leaving all thework to the smooth six-speed automatic transmission. With the automatic transmission, fuel consumption rises to 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres, and the topspeed is 182 km/h. The MINI Cooper D Paceman is available with or without ALL4 all-wheel drive.

SERIOUS POWERFor customers in search of a sporty yet fuel-efficient driving experience, the 1,360-kilogram MINI Cooper Paceman is exactly the right choice. Its two-litrecommon-rail diesel engine is a real powerhouse, delivering 105 kilowatts/143 horsepower and a maximum torque of 305 newton-metres at 1,750 rpm. Whichmeans sporty performance combined with the low consumption typical of any MINI. Despite a top speed of 200 km/h and a dynamic acceleration capable oftaking the MINI Cooper SD Clubman from 0 to 100 in just 9.2 seconds, the front-wheel drive model uses just 4.6 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. Drivers canchoose between using the crisp six-speed manual gearbox for gear changes or leaving all the work to the smooth six-speed automatic transmission. With theautomatic transmission, combined-cycle fuel consumption rises to 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres, while the top speed drops to 197 km/h. The MINI Cooper SDPaceman is available with or without ALL4 all-wheel drive.

08 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSIONTRANSMISSION

PERFORMANCE IN THE PALM OF YOUR HANDLike every MINI, the MINI Paceman is known for its crisp, dynamic manual gearbox – the crowning touch to a highly enjoyable driving experience. All Pacemanmodels have a precise, easy-shifting six-speed transmission, specifically designed to work in perfect harmony with any of the individual engines. This ensuresmaximum driving enjoyment plus maximum fuel-efficiency. And for MINI Paceman drivers who like to take things a little easier, there’s also the option of asix-speed automatic transmission.

GETRAGWhat makes the MINI such a pleasure to drive? One major factor is its manual transmission. The six-speed gearbox from Getrag is among the finest of its kind.Gear shifts are easy and precise, therefore keeping any of the various available engines running smoothly and responsively. Yet for all its dynamicperformance, this standard six-speed manual transmission is also exceptionally efficient. In fact, it’s a key element in keeping fuel consumption so low. And itworks in tandem with a fuel-saving automatic start-stop system.

AISIN

PAGE 37 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

The majority of MINI Paceman models are also available with an automatic transmission from Aisin, designed to operate in perfect harmony with any of theindividual engines. Just like its manual counterpart, the automatic transmission has six speeds, and these are automatically selected to suit the driving speed.Gear shifts are extremely smooth and gentle and can be controlled manually at any time, using either the gear lever or the optional paddles on the steeringwheel. The automatic transmission does not come with an automatic start-stop system in any of the models.

08 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSIONSPORT BUTTON & SOUND

Sport button: The Sport button activates a noticeably sportier vehicle set-up. On Cooper/Cooper S models, thischange is also underlined by a more powerful engine note. Throttle/vehicle responses are morespontaneous and direct, while for automatic models, the gear-shift times are shortened by up to 0.5seconds per gear shift, ensuring a racetrack-like experience. At the same time, the steeringbecomes stiffer and therefore more direct.

Sound: The sound is one of the key elements that make driving a MINI so special. All MINI Paceman modelshave a sound that is sporty but never intrusive – the ideal backdrop to the perfect MINI experience. The MINI John Cooper S Paceman has a particularly full-bodied sound when the Sport button isactivated.

08 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSIONOVERBOOST & TURBO

TAKE A DEEP BREATHThe two diesel versions – the Cooper D Paceman and the Cooper SD Paceman – both come with a turbo engine capable of up to 135 kilowatts/184horsepower, just like the top-of-the range model, the MINI John Cooper S Paceman. This ensures outstanding engine efficiency and performance. Theoverboost function in the MINI John Cooper S Paceman temporarily boosts maximum torque from 240 Nm to 260 Nm.

08 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSIONALL4

PAGE 38 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

ALL4 ONE AND ONE FOR ALLLike any pure-blooded sporty crossover, the MINI Paceman is also available with an optional all-wheel drive system. The ALL4 all-wheel drive systemdistributes engine power variably to the two axles as the situation requires. During normal driving, almost all the power is directed to the front axle. Shouldone wheel lose traction, up to 50 percent of the engine power is transferred to the rear axle and braking force is applied to the front wheels to avoid wheelspin. So all four wheels only come into play when there is actually a need for the all-wheel drive. And at speeds of 120 km/h and over, the MINI Paceman ispowered solely via the front axle.

MINI PACEMAN

With its compact dimensions, the MINI Paceman is one of the sportiest, most stylish cars on the road – but it’s also one of the safest in its class, with top prioritygiven to both active and passive safety. It offers a wide range of state-of-the-art safety systems, including Brake Assist, DSC, DTC, EDLC and ABS. And shouldan accident occur despite all these active systems, the ultra-rigid passenger cell, intelligent restraint system and a battery of airbags are there to ensurepassive safety. Torsional reinforcements behind the front seats make the body stiffer, improving both handling and active and passive safety.

09 SAFETYACTIVE SAFETY

THE INVISIBLE CO-PILOTSEvery MINI Paceman driver is accompanied by a whole range of experienced on-board assistants. They don’t occupy the seats, and they stay discreetly in thebackground – until things start to get tricky. That’s when these electronic helpers, which include ABS, DSC, DTC, Brake Assist and EDLC, leap into action in splitseconds, helping the driver avoid the accident or at least minimize the consequences. Regardless of external conditions, they intervene – slowing the MINIPaceman down safely or correcting its course to bring it back on track in even the most extreme driving situations.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): ABS applies and releases the calipers up to ten times a second. So the MINI Paceman remainsmanoeuvrable at all times, even in tricky situations. Meanwhile, using EBD and CBC, the ABS adjuststhe distribution of brake force between the four wheels, therefore preventing wheel lock.

Brake system: Both the petrol and the diesel versions of the MINI One Paceman and MINI Cooper Paceman have a16-inch brake system with disc brakes all round, measuring 294 x 22 mm (front) and 280 x 10 mm(rear). The MINI Cooper S Paceman has 16-inch high-performance brakes for the front axle, measuring 307 mm x 24 mm. The brake system meets the highest standards, and will even standup to exceptionally heavy use on the racetrack or when descending a mountain pass.

Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD): CBC ensures the MINI Paceman is always ready to brake. CBC permanently keeps the distancebetween caliper and brake disc to a minimum – so in an emergency, maximum braking action isguaranteed at all times. And in conjunction with EBD, it intelligently adjusts the distribution of brakeforce between all four wheels, depending on the type of road surface and the level of grip. As aresult, the MINI Paceman can corner safely even under heavy braking.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC):Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) helps the MINI Paceman driver maintain control even in extremesituations. The system measures and compensates for variables such as speed, rate of turn, lateralmovement, steering wheel angle, and brake pressure. If drivers want to be able to drift aroundcorners – on the racetrack, for instance – it can be deactivated. DSC also includes hill-start assist, which prevents the MINI Paceman from rolling backwards down slopes.

DTC/EDLC:The switchable Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function on the MINI Paceman controls wheel spin, for optimum traction and maximum acceleration on any surface. Wheel spin is prevented in twoways: by the application of braking, and by reducing engine torque to a given wheel. One of thebest technical features of DTC is the Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC). This can temporarilylock the drive axle, therefore ensuring that even in tight corners, as much power as possible is putdown onto the road.

Runflat tyres:The MINI Paceman comes with runflat tyres as standard. These feature reinforced sidewalls, so evenif there is a sudden and complete loss of tyre pressure, the MINI Coutryman can keep going for upto 150 kilometres, at a speed of up to 80 km/h. They also mean the tyre won’t come off the rim if itpunctures, preventing a dangerous loss of control. Tyre Pressure Control constantly monitors airpressure in the tyres.

Adaptive Headlights:Conventional headlights only ever point straight ahead. Adaptive Headlights, available on the MINIPaceman in conjunction with the bi-xenon option, work rather differently, adjusting the direction ofthe beams in step with the angle of steering and moving them in both the vertical and horizontalplanes to followthe road ahead and provide optimum illumination.

Rear-view and exterior mirrors with automatic anti-dazzle function: The optional automatic anti-dazzle function for the rear-view and exterior mirrors improves activesafety. As well as the convenience of not having to dip the rear-view mirror when there is a carbehind you at night, it also reduces the risk of drivers being dazzled when looking in their exteriormirrors. Photo cells detect how much light is hitting the mirror, and automatically dip it above acertain threshold, so the driver is free to concentrate on the road.

Fog lights:The optional fog lights support the dipped beam headlights when visibility is poor. In fog, snow orheavy rain, they provide particularly effective illumination of the road immediately in front of theMINI Paceman, helping the driver to see better and making it easier for other drivers to see the carin poor weather.

16-inch Cooper S Paceman brake: the MINI Cooper S Paceman has an extra-large 16-inch brake system with 307 x 24-millimetre discsat the front for optimized braking.

DYNAMIC BRAKE LIGHT:The Dynamic Brake Light is another active safety feature of the MINI Paceman. The LED brake lights come on in the usual way under gentle braking, but underemergency braking, they start to flash and the hazard lights are also activated. This makes it easier for following traffic to see how hard the MINI Paceman isbraking, giving them extra time to react. LED technology also means the brake light responds faster than a conventional bulb.

BRAKE ASSIST: This intelligent system identifies an emergency situation from how hard the driver is braking. It can then deliver maximum brake force in a matter ofmilliseconds, faster than a human could react unaided and without any intervention from the driver. This reduces impact speeds – or ideally, prevents animpact altogether.

09 SAFETYPASSIVE SAFETY

WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVEDriving pleasure and driving safety go hand in hand. Passive safety requires a rigid passenger compartment that protects the survival cell, and various systemsto prevent the kinetic energy of an impact reaching the occupants, all working seamlessly together. These include restraint systems like pyrotechnic belttensioners with force limiters, and driver, passenger, side and head airbags. Crumple zones at the front and rear help to absorb the energy of a crash, as do thereversible impact absorbers in the bumpers.

Electronic control system: A highly sensitive crash sensor is built into the middle of the MINI. This will instantly identify acollision from the sudden deceleration or the vehicle rolling over. Within a hundredth of a second, itunlocks the central locking, switches on the hazard and interior lights and turns off the fuel pump toprevent any fuel leakage.

Restraint system: The pyrotechnic restraint system in the MINI comprises belt tensioners and force limiters, ensuringthat the seatbelts do their job without themselves causing injury to the occupants. As soon as thecrash sensor detects an accident is imminent, the belt is pulled tight before the impact. During theimpact, it is slightly loosened to reduce the risk of injury in the pelvic area.

PAGE 53 / 56

Steering column: The collapsible steering column retracts by up to 100 millimetres in the event of a crash. Inconjunction with the airbags, this significantly reduces the risk of injury.

AIRBAGS: The driver, passenger, side and head airbags are doubly useful in terms of safety: they protect the occupants from collisions with the dashboard, doors andwindows, while also providing a barrier against flying fragments.

PASSENGER CELL: The MINI comes with an ultra-rigid passenger cell, which maximizes protection for the occupants in the event of an accident and prevents the kinetic energy ofan impact from reaching them. This protection is enhanced by the restraint system with its pyrotechnic belt tensioners and force limiters and by the driver, passenger, side and head airbags. Crumple zones at the front and rear help to absorb the energy of a crash, as do the reversible impact absorbers in thebumpers.

10 QUALITYQUALITY IS ITS OWN REWARD

Fine design, driving pleasure and fuel-efficiency are not the only classic MINI hallmarks. Quality has always been a top priority in any MINI. All models areproduced to a rigorously high standard – making them just as enjoyable to drive several years after their purchase as when they’re brand new. Which is whythe various MINI Countryman models hold their value better than any other vehicle in their class. A major factor here is the low cost of ownership, with longservice intervals (30,000 kilometres), low maintenance bills, excellent fuel economy and high resale values.

10 QUALITYPRODUCT QUALITY

FOR THE DISCERNING DRIVERTrue product quality takes years to reveal itself. But with the MINI Paceman, you have a good idea straight away. The doors close with a satisfying clunk thatyou don’t associate with a compact car, and the upholstery, be it leather or cloth, is made of premium-quality materials, all stitched and finished to the higheststandards – as you’d expect in any vehicle from the BMW Group.

10 QUALITYVALUE RETENTION

PAGE 54 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

ENDURING VALUEThe value retention found in a MINI Paceman, is exceptional – both within its class and beyond. Even after a few years, MINI models hold their value betterthan almost any other vehicle on the market. Very few vehicles have such excellent resale prices. According to Autobild magazine and Eurotax, the MINI hadthe lowest depreciation of any car in 2010. Even after three years, it is still worth 68.5% of the showroom price.

11 COMPETITORSOUR RIVALS

The market for compact crossover vehicles is a tough one. Almost all the major manufacturers offer a successful crossover that provides an off-road experiencewhile also blending perfectly into the urban environment. However, the closest thing at present to an authentic crossover coupé is the Range Rover Evoque, which is available both as a five-door and as a three-door model. The Nissan Juke is also worth mentioning – subject to certain reservations – since it appealsto a similar clientele.

11 COMPETITORSRANGE ROVER EVOQUE

PAGE 55 / 56

MINI PACEMAN

ELEGANCE AND CLASSIn principle, the Range Rover Evoque is a class above the MINI Paceman in terms of price positioning and dimensions. It is, however, targeted at a similarclientele. The Range Rover Evoque is available as either a three- or a five-door model, capable of seating four or five people respectively. There is a choice oftwo petrol and two diesel engines, with outputs ranging from 150 to 240 horsepower, and both front-wheel and all-wheel drive are available. Luggagecapacity is adjustable between 550, 1,350 (five-door) and 1,445 (three-door) litres. For more information, see the competitor analysis.

11 COMPETITORSNISSAN JUKE

PLAYING IT COOLThe Nissan Juke has emerged as one of the most successful crossovers in the compact segment. Despite being available only as a five-door model, the NissanJuke – unlike its cousin the Nissan Qashqai – has some appeal for customers who lean instinctively towards the coupé segment. There is a choice of two petrolengines or one diesel engine, with outputs ranging from 110 to 190 horsepower, and both front-wheel and all-wheel drive are available. Luggage capacity isadjustable between 251 and 786 litres. For more information, see the competitor analysis.
