miniCAST El Paso now has an additional partnership with the TCEA (Texas Computer Education Association) which provides our attendees membership into its organization and free additional online professional development in technology education.

Who is STEAM Region 19? STEAM Region 19, Inc. originated from a group of dedicated science and technology educators in  the Region 19 area of Texas. STEAM Region 19 Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that hosts monthly science/technology dinners with special guest presentations and organizes the annual miniCAST El Paso conference with the purpose of providing some of the most interesting and fun professional development opportunities that our teachers will ever witness.

Why is miniCAST important for El Paso? The El Paso area is a traditionally underserved community when it comes to education, with the majority of our local schools designated “Title-1” (meaning that our students come from socio-economically challenged home environments). Future job providers whether at the local, state, or global level are asking for professionals in STEAM related fields. Although our local university and colleges have facilities and programs to meet these requirements, we need students from our local schools to be prepared for these new fields and careers. It is therefore critical for El Pasoans to produce STEM-literate students and to help our country remain a global competitor in science and technology innovation. Professional development opportunities such as miniCAST El Paso provide our teachers with effective strategies that are needed to increase student interest and completion in high-demand STEAM majors.

miniCAST El Paso partners with multiple regional school districts and educational institutions to showcase the latest pedagogy in STEAM learning. We bring together local talent from school districts, private business, science related non-profits, UTEP, and EPCC to offer a broad range of topics including: astronomy, seismology, entomology, robotics, coding, app-building, film-making, science story-telling, maker-space, creativity and design, rocketry, and the list goes on.

miniCAST 2019 Sponsorships miniCAST El Paso 2019 will be held Friday, October 18 (evening) and Saturday, October 19 (all day) 2019 at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The event will feature a Friday Night networking event at the Centennial Museum hosted by Insights. The Saturday conference will be held at the UTEP Undergraduate Learning Center and will feature TEN five-minute rapid fire keynotes showcasing 10 professors with the latest in STEAM related research from the University of Texas at El Paso, an exhibit hall with 40 exhibitors, over 60 workshop presentation opportunities which are aligned to state and local standards, and teacher door prizes given away at the end of the conference. All attendees will receive a complimentary lunch, as well as a free membership in STAT and TCEA; statewide science and education technology organizations that offer a plethora of online STEM resources for the classroom. Approximately 400 teachers from all of the local school districts, charter schools, private non-profits as well as from Southern New Mexico are expected to attend. The miniCAST Conference Fee is $125 per person.

With dwindling professional development budgets, it becomes more difficult to send teachers to professional development trainings. miniCAST is a great way to not only help educators in the area, but also to show them that your organization supports education in a tangible way. Every conference has costs, from food to programs, to transportation to media and facilities rentals. By supporting this event, you are showing your support to education in the El Paso area.
