History
• Revival of interest in Russian Constructivism • Marcel Duchamp’s Readymade works• Self-conscious movement or reaction to the 2nd World War
Description
• Movement of postmodernist art• Rejection of metaphorical associations, symbolism, and
suggestions of spiritual transcendence. • These simple works used minimal techniques to communicate
more what the artist felt in response to the war or another issue than it reflected the artist’s technical capabilities.
• Minimalism was a reaction against the formal overkill and pretentiousness of Abstract Expressionism. It had roots in Pop art, Cubism, and Conceptual art.
• Minimalist art strived to create an object with presence, something that can be seen at its basic physical appearance and appreciated at face value.
• the artists believed that the viewer’s personal reaction to the object was of higher importance, and thus strove to eliminate the presence of the creator in their work.
Characteristics
• The art composition is simplified by reducing the number of colors, lines, values, textures, and shapes so that the observer can readily identify the central concept or message.
