Case Study: Multi-national fashion and food retailer

The project The project required the new LEDs to achieve energy efficiencies of more than 50% while improving the appearance of food products, and ensuring a consistent cool white colour across all cabinets.

In total, the project required Minimise to manufacture and supply over 40,000 LED lamps for installation in 425 stores nationwide in a tight three month timeframe. Minimise had to manage the effective delivery of store-specific fittings to regional despatch hubs, facilitating each week’s installation programme.

The project required each store upgrade to be completed in a single night, with up to 40 stores being completed each week. To meet this objective, Minimise was required to put in place and manage a comprehensive manufacturing and supply programme, producing up to 10,000 lamps each week to meet installation requirements.

To complete the project, all discarded lamps had to be collected for recycling.

Key benefits• Reduced cabinets’

energy consumption

• Cool running LEDs further reduced energy load on chiller and freezer cabinets

• Reduced ongoing maintenance costs

• Improved illumination

• Improved product shelf appeal

• Improved light safety

• Consistent, flicker-free cool white light

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, this high profile retailer wanted to make significant energy efficiencies across its estate of UK stores, replacing the fluorescent tubes in food hall fridge and freezer cabinets with LED alternatives.

The Minimise responseFollowing a successful competitive tender process, Minimise completed a trial at one of the retailer’s flagship London stores. This confirmed that the recommended LED T8, T5 and 2G11 CFL lamp replacements would meet project objectives.

The new lamps provided a cool, even illumination, eliminating ‘dull’ spots caused by the degradation and inconsistent replacement of fluorescent tubes. This improved product shelf appeal while reducing energy consumption within fridge and freezer units by more than 50%.

The fridge and freezer LED retrofit programme was then rolled out to all 425 stores, delivering an annual energy saving of over 3.8 million kWh across the retail estate. This equates to a saving of over £350,000 and a reduction in carbon emissions of over 10,400 tCO

² over 5 years.

The project was logistically demanding. Minimise manufactured and supplied more than 40,000 lamps for installation in 425 stores nationwide, matching and managing the just-in time supply of store-specific lamps to a new supply hub each week to facilitate over-night installation.

The installation programme was particularly demanding, requiring each store upgrade to be completed in a single night. Intense planning was put in place to ensure that the stock requirements for the roll out were kept up to speed with the installation work, the factory was outputting 8,000-10,000 lamps per week.

As each store had different requirements, Minimise worked closely with the installers to co-ordinate the manufacture and supply of the new lamps to meet the installation schedule, and also took responsibility for back-hauling all discarded lamps for recycling.

“This project is a real testament to Minimise Energy’s ability to manufacture and deliver large scale roll out projects to tight time scales that are logistically challenging. The speed at which we could react to the initial project mobilisation, as well as the changes and challenges that we faced along the way, demonstrated our manufacturing and project management capability at its best.”Andrew Shortis, Group Managing Director
