The greater number of the claims in and about Webater-street have been worked out or abandoned. . Thc Great Northern Freehold ,Company have not washed during the last five weeks, the men underground

having I!een· engaged in prospecting a portion of the mine. About three weeks since this company purchased the claim of the Webster-street Freehold Company (from which at first such large quantities of gold were obtained), for the sum of £700, and will commence washing in a few, days.

The Band of Hope and. Albion Companies are now united under the style of the Band of Hope and Albion Consols Company, and the claims and plant of the first·named companies have been assigned to the new company.

Mining operations have been discontinued at one of the shafts of the United Hand-in-Hand and Band of Hope Company, in consequence of the washdirt not being remunerative.

The Cricket Reserve Company have stopped work, the claim having been worked out, and the plant is now advertised for· sale. .

The Newington Company have within the last fortnight suspended worK, and a portion'of the machinery has been sold. The mine is said to have been thoroughly tested, and the ground found to be too poor to pay for working.

The Inkermann and Durham Company, who lately purchased the claim and plant of the West Newington Company, have washed only four machines of dirt from the ground worked by the last-mentioned company, and it appears likely to prove payable. Several drives are now being opened into washdirt. New drives are being opened in different parts of the InkermaIlll' and Durham Company's former claim.

The Nelson and Wellington Company, at Sebastopol, has been reorganized under the style of the New Nelson Company, and active operations will be commenced forthwith. _ '

The Old Cosmopolitan Company have sold their claim and plant to the Black Hill Company, and 'a new company under the style of the New Burra-Burra Company has been formed to work it. The new company have purchased a plant and battery, formerly employed at Staffordshire Reef, and they intend sinking the shaft deeper for the purpose of testing the quartz at a greater depth.

You will observe, by the abstracts forwarded herewith, that all the quartz claims at' Little Bendigo have, with one exception, stopped work. Those on Golden Point have also stopped, the cause, no doubt, being that the yield was not. remunerative. Peake and Company have accepted tenders for sinking their shaft deeper.

The division continues to improve in a very marked manner. Speculators are bestowing attention on the several quartz reefs, and I am pleased to say with most satis

factory results. The Rokewood Quartz-Mining Company, Pinchgut Reef, have, at a depth of. twenty-three feet, struck

a lode that, at the most moderate estimate, should yield 2 ozs. per ton. In fact the stone exceeds in auriferous appearance any that has come under my notice during my connexion with the division. The width of the vein is not'yet ascertained, the crosscut not 'being quite completed. .

. Moonlight Heef has been l'e-occupied by a company called the "Homeward-bound,1' who are in treaty for a crushing plant for the claim, the trial crushing having yielded 4 dwts. 5 grs. per ton. . ,

The Break-o'-pay Company, Elder's Estate, had 2,424 ozs. 16 dwts. of gold for the past quarter's washing, with every semblance of a continuance of the' lead. This last is private property.

Prospecting in the Rokewood portion of the division is can:ied on with unabated ardor, though, as yet, with but small result.

. It is eJrpected that operations will soon be renewed at the Erin-go-Bragh, by sinking to a deeper level, at which richer quartz is looked for. The Standard Company's mine is now ip possession of the Imperial Company, tlIe latter intending to work both batteries; meanwhile the Imperial are getting excellent returns from the 320 feet level, where their workings broke into those of the Standard, the .average being about .t of an oz. per ton. .

, The quartz reefs in this division are again attracting considerable attention, and parties have been formed to work the Long Gully and Cobbler's Reefs, whilst prospecting parties are generally spread over the division. It is not eJrpected that any rich reefs will be opened, but there is little doubt that quartz, averaging agout 3 dwts., exists in large quantities, and that average, it is now generally a~itted, ,,-ill pay in this divisi~n.

ALLUVIAL MINING.

In alluvial-mining there is little change to report. : Better yields have been obtained during the quarter at the lower Durham claims, leading to a hope that the Leigh Grand Junction and South Grenville may soon be at work at the shallow ground, situate three-quarters of a mile north-west from the South Grenville shaft, beil;lg the locality prospected by the Geological Survey party now camped close to the auriferous ground. A party have taken up a surface claim, and erected a puddling machine; from trials they have made tliey consider the dirt payable, though not rich; the ground they intend working is entirely surface, though in all probability payable washdirt will be found in the !!'utter forming from t~e shallow ground, .

At the Franklyn a party are preparing to sink for a tributary which falls into the Franklyn worked gutter from the Hard Hills, in a southerly direction, formerly known as the Red-wash. '

At Buninyong ~he Webbville Company have at last got through the rock at a depth of 148 feet, which must be close to the gutter for which they are sinking, and which is supposed to be the same as that partially worked by the Buninyong New, at its junction with the Union Jack, where it was rich, falling in from the eastward.

The Independent still obtain good yields. The deep workings of Buninyong proper have as yet received but a very partial trial.

The subjoined returns from the principal mines will show that they are paying well. There is, however, It considerable falling off in the aggregate yield of the division. This falling off is owing chiefly to the exhaustion of a good portion of best known leads, and also to. the migration, during the last twelve months, of a large number of miners to Ballarat and elsewhere, Since the date of my last report the Golden Lake Company have fairly driven into the gutter. The prospects of this mine are of a very enconraging nature. As a set· off, however, to this hopeful new mine we have to record the end of one which has for better than two years stood at the head of the mines in this division. The 'l'ry.again Claim, that referred to, will be probably finished this week. The Grand Trunk, Springdallah, is improving in yield, and the Exchequer is reported to be dipping at such a rate as leaves shareholders a hope that the unproductive gutter which they have been working in for several months is but a tributary, and that the main trunk gutter has not yet been reached. There is nothing doing southward of this claim. •

The Golden Stream puddled during the quarter 30,L88 trucks of washdirt, which gave 856 ozs. 14 dwts. 3 grs. This company is about starting the engine in the new shaft.

At Haddon there is not much doing at present. The Gladstone is the only company there getting gold. The Reform Company have been very unlucky in sinking the shaft. Twice within the last three months the puddling clay intended to have dammed back the water in the shaft gave way, and admitted such a quantity of water as will prevent further sinking until larger pumps than those in use at present be procured. These mishaps have materially retarded the progress of this promising locality. .

There is nothing new to be reported of the Carngham mines except the resumption of work in the Old Extended, at Bottle Hill, and the purchase of the late Triumph claim and plant, Snake Valley, by the Magnum Bonum Company.

There is nothing particular tp be reported of Linton and Happy Valley. Mining in these places is in a rather low condition. •

. Brown's, Italian's, Derwent Jack's, are nearly deserted. , There is no quartz mining in my division. I do not observe any noticeable change in the population since my

last report. . The quantity of gold produced in my division during the quarter was 14,122 ozs. 9 dwts. 15 grs., of which

10,876 ozs. 14 dwts. 15 grs. was obtained from Scarsdale and Springdallah, 1,480 ozs. 15 dwts. from Carngham, and 1,765 ozs. from Linton and Happy Valley. .

The yields from the principal mines are as follows :-

Grand Trunk ... Try.again Golden Stream' ... Golden Horn North Grenville Atlas ." Bute ... Avonclift Magnum Bonum (Carngham)

There is not suoh an evident desire. on the.JP.art of the .. Pllblic to prospeot; this branch of mining 80S there is evinced for quartz,. so that I have not much new information to give on the suhject.· Several large claims have been taken up in the vicinity of the ground applied for on lease ;by·the Ker.rit-Bareet Company. The t;;,king up of this portion of the .district was due to the fact of the Morning- Star Company (a company.to the north of the ground applied for bY,the Kerrit-Bareet Company) haviljg struck wash dirt at a depth of 60 fept, with indications of the lead deepening to the south.'" It is. expected thac this ie .. d will pa~s through the claim of the Kerrit-Bareet Company. This company are now engaged in sinking a shaft; which is now down a depth of 80 feet. The company are also about to erect the usual surface requirements for the purpose of sinking the shaft to the neces]ary dppth.

A party of Europeans are prospecting some ground in the neighborhood of CantwI·ll's Creek, north-east of Mount.Egerton, but as vet without any results. '.

Another party of Europeans are also prospecting some groun~ in the neighborhood of Little Ben's Creek, south. west of Mr. Learmonth's lease; they have already sunk their.shaft to a depthof90 feet. From.the strata passed through, there is every indication .that they are upon a 'deep run of ground. . .

A number of Chinese are working the old ground in All Nations Gully. and are now engaged in stacking their washdirt, there being a scarcity of:water just'now; but prior to the water failiug(they obtained, on an avelage, t oz. to the load. .

Below the above party another party of twelve Chinese have sunk a shaft '110 feet deep, ·through 67 feet of basaltic rock, and have bot.tomed in a gutter about 9 feet 1Videj 'with I) feet of washdirt, the average yield of which is about 4 dwts. to the load.

QUARTZ MINING" - -

The prospecting of this branch of I!liriing has been well carried on during the quarter. If the work is proceeded with in the same spirite<l manner, there is every probability that a large section of the' district will be well pl'Ospected;

Egerton Company.-This companYl,is still, as wiJl be seen by th~ tab~!'ls" 1ie~ng workE!d,inia.mQ~t sa~isfactory manncr. The company has, during the quarter, erected a winding engine of 14 horse-power.

The Black Horse Company.~The ~.haft C!f. ~his company is, no.w down\t. df;p~h of 326 feet. The reef wa~ st~uck at a depth of 275 feet; the shaft was then ~ullk through the solid reef to a depth of 310 feet; it then showed indlCatlOns of dipping to tlie 'west, but the reef was' regained at a depth of 317 feet, and- from' that depth to the present the reef appears to be getting more and more solid. A 30 horse-power engine has been purchased by the company, and will be erected immediately. The number of stamp-heads has not yet been decided on; but!.~ will either be 15 or 20.

A contract has just been let for opening .the shaft out to the east, north, and south; the sinking is dry, or nearly so. ,

The White Horse Company is situated iIl}'!llediately nor.th of-the Black Horse Company. The company have sunk a shaft.to a depth of 205 feet; several leaders were struck as the shaft was sunk. At the depth of 205 feet a large hody of stone was struck; at the same time tt1!lre was such a rush of water that it was, quite impossible to keep it down with the means then in use; consequently operations had to be' suspended until a whim could be erected. The rush of water was so great ~hat it rose 25 feet in the shart in half an hour.

The Princess of Wales Company's shaft is down 100 feet. It is said that a reef 4 feet wide can be traced in this shaft from the surface, gold being occ!1sionally visible ill the stone. -

North Egerton Company.-A contract has heen let by this company for sinking 100 feet of their shaft. Kangaroo Bob Company, Gordoll.-Extensive works have been commenced by this company; they have erected

a pumping engine of 35 horse-power, and'a winding Ol1e of 14; the battery has not yet been erected. Victoria Quartz 11 ining Company.-The shaft of this company is down 178 feet. Quartz is now being raised in

which gold is occasionally seen; a 35 horse-power.e,ngine and a battery of 10 heads have just been erected, and active operations are now being carried on.. . ,

Although a large amount of work has been carried on in the district during the quarter, very little gold has been obtained. Th~ is on account of the princ~pal portion of the work being prospecting.

The tributors in the Imperial are' still getting . excellent stone. Owing to the formation of the ground on this . reef, the Crown Company and Williams Brothers will have to sink 60 feet to reach the same shot of gold. The Morning Star Company have not crushed much stone this quarter, as they are driving a tunnel 350 feet, which will give about 70 feet of backs. ,

The Faugh-a-Ballagh have opened a new reef to the east of their former workings, from which they obtained their last crushing of 120 tons. The True Blue still maintains its name as the most steady paying reef in the district: the tributors' time expires in July. The Hastings and. Eureka! claims are still yielding excellent stone; these claims will very shortly require powerful machinery to keep down the water, which is very quick. ,

Messrs. Hamann and Co. are crushing 150 tons from' their claim on the All Nations Reef, and, from the appearance of the boxes and plates, they anticipate that it will go about 2 ozs. to the ·ton. This line of reef has been' prospected f9r a distance of half a mile,· and payable prospects obtained all through; but there is no machine within four miles of it. Hamann and Co are paying 23s. for .carting' and crushing. ,

The sluicing claims are now all in full work. Very little has been done in alluvial mining for the last six months. A party of two obtained a nugget last month, weighing 44 ozs.; the same men had one about this time last year,

66 ozs., from the same claim. The Chinese have been doing rather better than their European neighbors, this season, in the creek and fiats.

Spring Creek and neighborhood.

Sluicing operations have been nearly at a standstill in this locality, on account of the scarcity of water; but as the winter rains have now set in, the springs will soon give an increased supply, and work will be resumed. Miners engaged in sinking are making fair wages, and none have yet been induced to leave for Queensland.. '.

The Rocky Mountain Company are still blasting at their tailrace; it will be finished about the end of the year. The Excelsior Tailrace Company have washed up 287 ozs., being eight months' work for four men. . A small diamon~ has been found in Young's l,'reek; it :weighs nearly a carat, but is not of a very good color.

Bow'"1-an's Forest.

A large quantity of stone is on the surface here waiting for the erection Qf a crushing mill by Dean and Co., and several old abandoned reefs have been taken up again, as it is thought that they' will now pay-a mill being close at hand. The erection of the Murmungee Company's mill will be completed during next month.

Not much. doing in the alluvial here. Attempts have been made at various times to trace the leads into the . flats, but no shaft has ever been bottomed in the deep ground. Should an enterprising company put machinery of sufficient power on the ground to enable them to bottom, it is believed they would be rewarded with rich returns.

M!Jrtliford and vici'llit;y. The first crushing (72 tons) from the Darling Grant Reef gave 4~ ozs. to the ton. The reef is situate on the

range above Granite Creek, and is only from 8 to 12 inches in width, and is of a very hard description of stone. The shaft is down 40 feet, and at t4at depth the stone appears to be as rich as that already crushed.

The Tubal Cain Company are about to erect pumping and crushing machinery on their claim. The shaft has been sunk to a depth of 14D feet, where the reef is still 3 feet wide, and looking as rich as any that has been crushed from it. '

The Racecourse Company's shaft is down' 100 feet; when it is 30 feet deeper they will drive for the reef. The company are erecting a new water-wheel for the purpose of pumping and crushing.

Eldorado. Capitalists and mining speculators have at last turned their at~ention to this locality, and the lead has been

taken np for about six miles below the present workings. The claims at work still give excellent returns of gold and black sand (tin ore). The Wellington Company are

about to make their company a joint stock concern, for the purpose of increasing their capital and working their claim to greater advantage. A second shaft is required in this claim.

In McEvoy's (United Eldorado Company) a " run" of drift took place the 'other day which filled up a great part of their workings, and by which one man lost his life.. It will take some time before the damage to the claim can be repaired.

:Machinery is being laid down on both the Ovens Gold and Tin Company and the Great Extended Eldorado Company's ground. lIining operations will be commenced as soon as it is erected. '

'l'he Golden Lake Company have obtained a lease of their ground. • The Good Hope G?l~ ~nd 'rin Mining Company is the name of a new loeal company formed for the working of

the ground below and adjOInIng the Golden Lake Company's lease. . The Happy-go.Lucky Company have registered ground to the south of the Great Extended Company. Hindmarsh and Co. continue working on the 70-feet floor; and still obtain good returns. It will take two or

three years to work this floor out. Four bores have been put down on the Great Eldended Company's ground, and in each of the three floors wash

dirt has been found. The deepest bore was 230 feet and the shallowest 175 feet. The shaft is hQing sunk in the vicinity of the first bore.

The population, as is usual. at this season of the year, has slightly increased; 'the' great scarcity. of water, however, greatly retards working on the dry leads, which may be said to be almost at a standstill.

The Magenta Qu artz Mining Company have been engaged throughout the quarter in running a large open cut into the lower levels of the reef, in order to facilitate arid cheapen the mode of working the poorer parts of the veins, and have not, therefore crushed any .tone.

Two new reefs have been discovered in the neighborhood of Chiltem, and the prospects obtained are said to be very encouraging. . .

Thc ~ipeclay Reef, in the Rutherglen Ranges, has yielded' some very rich stone during the quarter, 17 tons 7 cwt. having producod 150 ozs. 6 dwts. 12 grs., being at the rate of 8 oz. 13 dwts. 6'84 grs, per ton, The width of reef has varied from 2 feet to a few inches, The casing is a soft pipeclay, which renders it very easy to extract the stone. The total depth sunk is about 70 feet.

The alluvial mines on the wet leads continue to be steadily worked. The yields from the Extended Sons of Freedom Gold Mining Company I have 'reason to believe are

satisfactory, The continued litigation between this company and the company claiming to occupy the adjoining ground sadly retards the progress of the Chiltem 'Lead; if this vexed question we're settled, two new' plants would immediately be placed on the ground. '.

The Indigo Grand Junction Company have now proved a considerable extent of ground and are preparing to block out. A few weeks will suffice to prove the value of the claim, '

The Rutherglen Gold Mining Company ai'e still engaged on their main drives; a large quantity of first-class ground has been discovered, It will probably be five or six months'before blocking ont is commenced in this claim.

It is to be hoped these important claims will more than realise the anticipations of the shareholders, and be the means of inducing the investment of capital in developing the vast resources and enhancing the value and importance of one of the most promisinp mining divisions in the colony. '

Quartz mining in'this division is steadily progressing-:-a result arising not only from the discovery of new and valuable reefs, but likewise from the fact of some of them being in localities heretofore looked upon by our prospectors as being without the supposed line of auriferous reefs, and with reference generally to ou!' older quartz workings, I have reason to think that a larger number of stamp· heads wiII be engaged crushiug quartz during the next six months than at any previous period here. My reasous for antieipating sueh a result are: first, that two new mills, with'I6 stamp-heads, are being erected; and, secondly, that the completion of tedious and expensive tunnels iuto the Alta, Australasia, and Home reefs, will enable the mills held in connection with these reefs to resume work after a very long period of idleness; and althongh one machine has been removed from the division, I shall not be surprised if from 50 to 60 stamp-heads, now idle, will be working within two or three months. ' , One of OUI new reefs-the' Un~ted Miners-near Harrietville, one-half of which is held by Melbourne shareholders, has paid over sixteen thousand pounds in dividends since August"I867, the large quantity of gold got being the produce of the work of only five stampers. '

The Phomix Deep Lead Claim, near Harrietville, is still being worked, and is paying fair wages to the 10 men employed upon it; however, partly from the lead, so far as it is worked, being only 40 feet in width, and, also from the' fact of the payable washdirt not being settled in a defined run upon bedrock, but found in a streak of gravel about 20 feet above it. No other claim has been opened below the.one referred to,

The proceedings of the quarter throughout this division have been characterised by the successful development' of many of the older mines and the discovery of new £elds of operation.

. The yields from the mines in the vicinity of Alexandra, as well as fmm those in the outlying parts of the district, have been large, though, owing to the unusually dry season and the want of suitable appliances for conserving water for mining purposes, the quantity of quartz submitted to the crushing mills has been comparatively small.

In a previous report I referred to the facilities for prospecting that existed in this district: a{lother feature, and one to which in some measure the rapid and successful progress made in testing the newly discovered reefs at Alexandra must be attributed, is that water is seldom an obstructive at a less depth than 200 feet. I

Amongst other gratifying features which have marked the proceedings of the quarter may be mentioned the large yield obtained from the Homeward-bound, a line of reef rullI.ling nearly parallel and at a distance of about 400 yards from the Lucky Reef. The vein from which the quartz is being taken varies from 18 inches to 3 feet in width, presenting uniformity in' its dip and strike, and e'xhibiting, so far as'l.t has been opened, an appearance of permanency.

At; Ghin-ghin the alluvial ground is nearly worked out, and the population rapidly decreasing. Various reefs presenting appearances more or less promising have been discovered, from the position of which it is probable that a large portion of the alluvial gold has been denuded. It is therefore not impossible that a new and'more permanent character. may attach itself to that goldfield than has hitherto appeared.

Mining at Maindample is nO.t in a progressive state. The rE-efs at Spring Creek continue to yield largely, and assume a more defined appearance than they hitherto

presented. . In alluvial mining the yields are slightly under those of the previous quarter, in consequence of the rE-cent rising

of the rivers, to the banks of which that· branch of mining iA almost exclusively con£ned; though the aggregate quantity obtained, when taken in connection with the number of men employed, is most satisfactory.

While mining-alluvial and qnartz-both on the older workings and on those recently opened, is in a. healthy state, the general popUlation, and more especially that part of it depending more directly on the proceeds of the mines, appears to be excessive; a. circumstance, although indirectly operating. not unfrequently retards progress OIl a new goldfield.

Quartz minirig ill this suhdivision is again drawing the attention of the public. The late good yields from 'the A 1 and the Rose'of Denmark mines acting as a stimulant; ,

The scarcity of waleI' for motive power purposes has been a. great drawback to most of the mines; but during the last fOJ tllight we have had beavy aud contilluous rains, and, at the present time, the followiug companies are busy crushillg uigllL alldday, v~z. :-A 1, Gold'en Edt, Vidoria, HUllt's~ Gafflley's Cleek l'nited, Sons of Erin (a new plant erected elUl'iug the pre;ellt quarter on the 'Sons of Edn lease). In all of the above named'companies' mines they have a large quantity of stone ready to be put through the 'mill, and the reef now being I'rorked in the mines looks very promi1;illg, and I have no doubt but the next quarter's ret.urn will show a very great increase in the amount of gold raised. '

• These crushing. are of mullock and Morning star granite and s,Yenite. t The amount of .tone crushed is estimated by the manuger. The above. are nll the cru&hillgS for the .quarter' washed up.

The hopes entertained of an improvement in the pro~pects,of this district in April were materially damped by a protracted period of dry weather, lasting ten weelis.Such lengthened drought and lrost has not bl;)en known here b.dore. The rain bas now set in, and the bU5iness of mining is assuming its winter aspect.

The 'Vood's Point ~Company have crushed some 250 tOllS of stone at the Morning Star Prospectors' lower machine; the result is given above. ' '

The Marmion Company have failed to obtain payable results frgm their last crushing of 170 tons. Considering the amount of gold obtainable by panning, this result would astonish us much were we not now used to these disappointments.

l'he present proprietor of the lease known as C. D. Fleming's, on the North Waverly, has been engaged conveying and erecting a crushing plant forinerly working at Gaffney's Creek. He will start crushing shortly.

The Never-mind is now let on tribute: the. prospects of this mine are not very brilliant at present. The Morning Star Prospectors are getting out stone and will commence crushing when their engagement with

the Wood's Point Company shall be ccmpleted~ , . , The Hope Company has not yet had a washing up. lI1:atters here are, however, looking very well, and the men

are at, their full complement ~ince the end of last week. , The United, whose tunnel is the key to the north-west claims of the Morning Star, have struck stone giving over,

16 dwts., as will be 'seen above. and though the quantity on their present level will be limited, their success promises well for their neighbors, the Alps Great Oontral Gold Mining Oompany and the Hope, who hold the body of the vein.' The yantage of their position enables them to take, the Alps and 'V ood's Point ground on tribute, a~d an arrangement has, I understand, been arrived at. ,

The Franklin Company, which has excellent prospects, began crushing at the Golden Bar machine last week. Their incline, connecting claim and machine, which has can sed the delay, is the longest in the division, nearly 1,200 yards, with a rise 'of say ToO feet. It is worked wth a barrel-break and trucks holding 35 cwt. to 2 ton·s.

Payable gold has been found in an old abandoned elaim, known as No.2 S. Shamrock west. It is intendedfrom the nature of the lode-to sluice it, then to crush the quartz and tailings, for whi!-,h purpose a water-wheel will be shortly erected on Gooley's Creek. ". ' ,

From the foregoing notes it will be apparent that enterprise is again being brought to ·bear on our mineral resources, and I trust a permanent steady improvement will follow.' ,

The alluvial continues to pay well; the yield of alluvial gold, so far as traceable, I find to be ] ,583 ozs. A few creek daims are already flooded, hut the ,banks of the Goulburn al'l) only scratched, and claims producing £6 a man a week 'are still" to be met with in them; we want more skilled miners in this the best shallow alluvial field now 'in Victoria. I may add also that quartz miners are getting Bcru:ce." Wage,s are £~ a week.

BIG RIVER SUBDIVISION .

. Mr. Hugh 1St. H. Blair, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

Mining operations i~ this subdivision still continue in a'very depressed state. ~ think this is chiefly owing to the want of-capital, for several of the reefs have been proved to be payable. The mmes at work are worked on the tribute system by men who have no capital, and consequently their operatiGns are limited.

The Hope-on Company's mine is flooded, and in all probability they will not be able to resume work till after the winter months. They have a quantity of stone raised, which will be put through the mill at once.

The holders of the Londonderry lease have purchased the Unknown Company's machine, and are now engaged in constructing a tramway from their mine to the machine.

The Luck-'s-All Company have still a few men at wo:k; but, owing to the absence of the manager, I was unable to obtain any information. .

In ailuvial mining there is nothing new to report.

MITTA-111TTA DIVISION.

Mr. Andrew Trench, Mining Registrar.

. The yield of gold during the quarter in this division I estimate to be about 2.850 OZ9., the whole of which has been obtained from alluvial workings, as therp. are no quartz reefd worked ill this division. . .

As there is now a full supply of water the sluicing cbims are all heiug worked. At the junction, two par,ies have been prospectiug for deep leads, one party has bottomed their shaft at 100

feet, but found that the gold 011 the bottom was not sUlflcient to pay for working, as they bottomed about 40 feet below the level of the ]\litta-mitta, river, and had a large quantity of water to contend with; the other party are now down with their shaft about 80 feet. and have not struck bottom yet, but as they are getting a little gold as they go down they are in hopes of striking it good when they bottom. . ,

The other parts of this division remain about the same as, at the date of my last 1·eport. No new discoveries have been made during the quarter.

JAMIESON SOUTH SUBDmSION.

Mr. Hugh St. 11. Blair, ~Vining Surveyor and Registrar.,

With regard to quartz mining in this subdivision, there is a Jarge quantity of stone on the surface waiting for the mills. one of which, the Star of the West machine, bas been put in thorough order, during the summer, whi;o there was a sCHrcity of water. The other machine, at Mack's Creek (the Luck-'s-All), has only lately been re-erected by the Luck.'s-AII Company, both machines are now busy crushing.

The gold that, has been raised in this part of the subdivision during the past quarter has come from the bed and banks of the Goulburn river and the trihutary creel,s. 'llhe average has been about 800zs a week, but the lato heavy rains have raised the river so much that all the claimholders working in the bet!. have had to suspend theu claims. This. however, is not likely to cause any diminution in the return of alluvia! gold, for a great number of bank claims only await water to be worked. In.fact, in tlJe winter, the retul'llS are generally larger than in the summer, as the 'm luers theu haye greater fagilities for working It larger area of grvuud,

On the whole, the miners in Lhis part of the division are getting as good average re.urns as those in any other part of the colony. .

During the past quarter, considerable actiyity has been shown both in quartz and alluvial mining in this division. , "

A great many payable alluvial claims have been found-in the neighborhood of Bullock Creek. This, with the continued rich yields ,from Wilson's claim, at lVlarong, has attracted a great number'of miners to that part in search of alluvial diggings and new quartz reefs •. A considerable quantity of alluvial ground has consequently been sunk upon, in many cases with good results, and a number of quartz reefs discovered, some of which have proved payable.

From our old reefs there has .been more rich quartz crushed than I have known for some time past. Several claims have lately been taken up on the Barnia, Lawrence, Glasgow, Carshaiton, and Bignell reefs, and most .of them are doing well. ' "

It is a fact worthy of note that our deepest shafts are now being sunk still deeper, and the mines are paying well.

The Hustler's Reef Company are down 597 feet, and are still sinking at an enormous cost. They confidently expect to cut a good payable reef at 600 feet. At present they have about 30 men employed. , The Comet Company, Redan Hill, are down 533 feet, and are cross-cutting .at 500 feet to strike the Hustlers

line, which they expect to meet in a few days; they employ over 50 men in their mine. A buddle has been erected for the purpose of working their tailings, but the pyrites have not proved payable.

The Eagle Company, Specimen Hill, Eaglehawk, are putting in a cross-cut at a depth of 516 feet; thej have 26 men employed in their mine. .

The Johnson's Reef Company's engine shaft is n,ow 520 feet deep and is being sunk deeper. At 527 feet they intend putt.ing in a cross-cut to intersect the reef. A new shaft is also lJeing sunk from the surface, to facilitate the working of the western line of reef that has been paying handsomely of late. Bet.ween 70 and 80 men are employed in their mine.

Collman, Tacchi and CO.'8 shaft, on the Wetherall'Reef; is down 479 feet. Their quartz averages over 2 ozs. to the ton. They are sinking deeper.

The Ellesmere Company, on the New Chum Reef, are down 400 feet, and are still sinking, v.ith the view of putting in a drive at Ii greater depth to cut the reef. A considerable quantity of ground has been .opened up in different parts of their mine showing good prospects. They have over 50 men employed.

The Energetic Company, on Victoria Reef; have obtained good quartz at their 380 and 435 feet level. 68 tons of quartz yielded 202 OjlS. of gold.. '

The whole of the claims I have mentioned have bel:'n doing well at great depths, and many others have also. The following companies have been raising very good stone :-Exhibition Company, near the Big Hill, crushed

a lot that averaged over 8 ozs. to the ton. The Perfect Cure Company obtained 221 ozs. from 54 tons. Their reef averages 2 feet in thickness. 'rhev are down 80 feet-water level. The U. C. Company, New Chum Reef, have also had 'crushings of over 5' ozs. to the "ton. Burrows and Co. obtained 20 OllS, from ,10 tons at the Gold Dust Reef, near the,Campaspe..The Moon Reef Company crushed a lot which averaged over 6 ozs. to the ton. The Belle Vue Company, Golden Gully, obtained over 5 ozs. to the ton at their last crushing. The Argus Company, Alliance Com. pany, Lady Barkly Company, Young Chum Company, and North Johnsons Company have been getting first·rate ~~ . .

On the Sheepshead Reef very little is doing. The Union Company state 'that they have been paying a heavy drainage assessment for a long time past, but their ground has not been drained, and they have not been· able to work in consequence. It is supposed that a bar exists between their mine and the pumping claim which prevents the drainage 'if 'if '*' if: *' 'if 'if 'if 'if 'if * 'if '" '"

Wilson and Co.,.of Marong, obtained 388 ozs. from 63 tons of quartz. Quartz Prospecting claims have been registercd during the last three months on the following reefs :-Urie

Reef', Gifford's Reef, Silk's Reef, Flint's Reef, Beresford's Hill, Breton Reef, Martin's Reef, and Henderson's Reef, all near Marong and Bullock Creek, and one on Prince Albert's Reef, at the Whipstick. . At the commencement of this quarter water was ~ather scarce, and some of the crushing' machines were idle in consequence; it also proyed a drawback to the alluvial mining at Bullock Creek, but the late rains having given'uB a temporary supply, all are now busy. '

There is not much doing at the W.hite HiUs or Epsom, but at Huntly the companies have very good prospects in the deep leads.

The Huntly Deep Lead Company are. doing well. The manager states that they have discovered ~ right-angle bend in the lead to the East. .

The Telegraph Company find the lead very hard to trace. Last quarter they were working on a run of gold , which was bearing due east from the shaft and crossing the reefs. Since then, they find it mnning in a southerly

direction, The lead is about 300 feet wide. In the Cambridge Company's claim the lead has taken a sharp'turn. In Britt's claim, a very soft pipeclay reef runs about 300 feet north and south, and at each place it was

, touched for that distance it showed a perpendicular wall, about 8 feet in height, along which the auriferous wash ran quite close to the bottom of it, and from thence up the vertical part and over the tOP

Alluvial Prospecting claims have been taken up at Great Britain Gully, Bullock Creek, 29 feet, easy sinking, washdirt yielding t dwt. to the dish; Pol warth Hill, near Bullock Creek, 20 feet sinking, 12 feet of it cement, 18 inches of washdirt, yielding 3 dwts. per load; Whaler's Gully, Leichar~t, from 4 to 6 feet sinking, 6 inches of washdirt, yieldinO" 4 dwts. to the load; near the Pound, at Marong, 61 feet sinking, about] foot of washdirt, yielding 17 dwts. from two lo~ds; Bolle's Flat, Whipstick, 2 to 4 feet sinking, 1 foot of washdirt, yielding about 1 dwt. to the tin dish.

The gold found at Marong and Bullock Creek is not worth so much by about Is, 6d. per oz. as that found in other parts of this division. It is of a light yellow color, and may be easily distinguished. The alluvial is generally :fine, flaky, and ragged.

It is almost unnecessary to state, that by far the greater portion of our claimholders do not publish the amount of gold they obtain. .

The total amount of gold obtained this quarter may be estimated at about 44,000 ozs. from quartz, and about 10,000 ozs. from alluvial. . Total 54,000 ozs.

Some of the older quartz mines in this division having been worked unprofitably have been abandoned. The Magenta Company are now in with their tunnel 420 feet, and anticipate striking the reef in abont 30 feet

more. They are provided with a very snng plant the moment it is required. , The sale of the Reedy Creek Company's battery will be a serious check to prospectors, as there will be no battery on the creek to give stone a trial.

The Providence Mining Association, Yea, have let their claim on tribute, and the tributora are putting in a new lift of pnmps. When they can get out stone they anticipate that the reef will be highly remunerative. Two claims soutli on the Providence Reef have been taken up since.

The Welcome Company, Tea-tree Creek, are at work sinking a main water shaft, aud are not raising stone at present.' ,

Several new quartz reefs, some of them very promising, have been opened out on the Murrundindi Creek, about 12 miles from Yea, but the drawback hitherto has been want of machinery; arrangements are, however, made to supply that deficiency; . ' .

There have been a few trial' cmshings or stone from reefs nearer Yea, at the machine at the Flat Lead, but none of importance.

European alluvial miners a~e returning to the Reedy Creek, and I think next quarter will show an improvement in the yield of gold from this part of my division. .

, The Chinese miners are now partially employed by puddlers, their numbers, from inquiry, are not likely to mer ease. .

Alluvial workings still exist at Sunday Creek; Tea-tree Creek, and Murrundindi Creek, but they call for no particular remarks. . .

. There is, I thin Jr, a promise of a slight improvement' in mining prospects in my division, as indicated by the increased number of claims registered during the last three or four weeks; but as many of them are not' yet ill full work the returns of gold have not exhibited any improvement. A small rush has set in to a place near the base of Mount Koala, on the McIvor Creek; seven alluvial creek-claims and four quartz-claims have been registered-the sinking in the alluvial is about 6 feet through decomposed granite on to a bottom of solid granite; the gold has averaged about 4 dwts. to the tub. There has been some little stir also in reference to the antimony mines~eight claims have been registered during the last three weeks at. a place known as the" Old Antimony," about 4 miles from Heathcote. . Our mining population is again slowly increasing. Many old familiar faces are to be met with returning from " rushes" to our more re!\ularly productive reefs and gullies. A few strangers have also been attracted by the reports of the discoveries of payt, ble gold at the Buffalo ranges and at Siberia.

During the wet months I anticipate these localities, as well as the country southwards towards Mount }loormbool, will be well prospected, and with satisfactory results.

Amongst our quartz I'eet's Oll Hushworth, Old Nuggety Hill and the Mongolian, ha,e mainta.ined the leading positions. 'fhe average produce of the quartz from the latter reef continues remarkably good.

At Balaclava. the stolle crushed was taken from the surface to the depth of 90 feet, hy a.breadth of upwards of 100 feet, and low as the average appears to be, it more than pays the general working expenses of,. the miue. It is noteworthy that the whole of the quarter's crushing, viz., 3,538 tons, is a part of several thousand tons removed by one blast. •

The millers employed crushing cement at Rushworth are doing well.

. Mining matters iu this division, during the quarter, have been much depressed, owing to the long continued drought, which, it will be seeu, has cOJlsiderahly lessened the returns. The prospects of this division, in the opening up of p"yable reefs, are however now greatly hetter than ever they have heen since Raywood diggings were discovered: all that is required is water, and if this element is uot soon available, I fear the public here will suffer a rninous loss.

The following Companies' crushing mttchines stopped work six. weeks ago, and are still idle from the above cause :-New Era, Elysian Fbt, Rtephens' and Nicholls', and Nil Desperaudum. The latter company have just completed the erection of an excellent whim, in conuecti~ll with their famous claim on the Welbourne reef.

A party of miners are llOW engaged in erecting an 8-horsepower crushing plant in Raywood Gully for public purposes.

In alluvial mining I have nothing new to report. The rush to Bullock Creek, 18 miles distant, has caused a small exodus of .that class of miners ii'om this division.

, A small rush has taken place near· Doolmall's Hotel, in the Whipstick; but I have been yet unable to visit the locality. '

\

At Maiden's Hill, to the south of Majorca and Gibraltar, there is a very rich lead. This lead has been worked down to hcavy water, but work will now have to be abandoned thereon, as steam machinery can alone enable miners to go successfully into the deep ground. One company lately sunk a shaft on the edge of the deep ground over the lead, and took 31 ozs. 17.dwts. off the bottom. This company hold_ about 20 acres of ground on this spot, but. they have no machinery. and are therefore unable to work it to any advantage. ' ..

The Old Victory Company, at Majorca, have abandoned their deep ground, and so have the Kearsage Company, because of their total inability to cope with the water since the stoppage of the Manchester engine. The stoppage of these two companies will leave, for the present, one of the richest runs of gold at Majorca idle. This run is supposed to be identical with the lead belonging to the famous Cossey Company; the ground 'of the latter company has .been worked for the last four years and a-half, by a few enterprising Swiss and Italians.

The United Kingdom Company (co-operative) have worked for about six years on the outside of the well known Gibraltar Lead. It is probable that the best days of this company are yet before them. It would seem as though the lead at Gibraltar was supplemented by a quartz vein, which runs throul:(h the ground of the United Kingdom.Company. I infer th.is, because that company have occasonally, during their operatious, met with outside detached blocks of quartz, and some of these have turned out exceedingly rich. . .

if. . if. if. if. * if ...

The lead at Harrisou's Hill, near Carisbrook, and which is situated on private property, is now attracting considerable attention. This lead is 220 feet wide, and has an average depth of 70 feet, and appears to be very rich. The Phoenix Company (eo-operative), who have a eIaim thereon, have had 'returns for ·the quarter amounting to 485 ozs. 13 dwts., but they are under a heavy tribute to the proprietor of the land.

The Magnum Bonum Gold Mining Company (registered), at Chinaman's Flat, have been engaged during the quarter in blocking on the main lead in that place; they show very handsome returns. .

The Band of Hope Gold Mining Oompany, who were engaged last quarter in driving for thil gutter, have at length struck the lead, and have obtained a very handsome prospect. '1'he depth of their present shaft is 183 feet, with two levels, one at 160 feet, and the other at 177 feet. They have put in drives, including both levels, to the extent of nearly 800 feet, through reef and, gravel, a work of great labor, as the ground was very wet and drifty.

The following is a statement of gold obtained from the principal alluvial mines in this division for the past quarter :-

. '.I'he returns from several of the quartz reefs ill the division during the quarter show signs of healthy and vigorous improvement. Some of the reefs in the neighborhood of n-Iosquito are proving very valuable. Tick and party, of Adelaide Lead Reef, raised a lot of stone which yielded 4 ozs. to the ton; and a party on Blucher's Reef had a late crushing of 160 tons of stone, which gave them a return of 307 ozs. '.I'he New Flagstaff Reef Company had a trial crushing of 7 tons lately, which gave If ozs. to the ton.

,The Mariner's Reef Gold Mining Uompany (registered) are still idle, the stone being too poor to cover working expenses. The operations of the company are now confined to Battery and Soldiers' Reefs. These reefs are easily worked, being composed of a mixture of quartz and mullock veins. Depth of reefs 50 feet and upwards to the surface. They are worked on half tribute. * * * '* '* * * >I< * >I<

It is worthy of mention that a party of seven Chinamen have a quicksilver cradle at work upon the tailings of the Leviathan Reef Gold Mining Company, and 'it has been reported to me t,hat·they are deriving an income from their operations of £35 a week. '.

On the whole, the position of mining matters generally in this division is now established upon a more sound and prosperous basi.s than it has been for several years past.

Quartz mining in this division is likely to improve. A Ballarat'company, combined with working men i~ the locality, have lately taken up 3,000 feet of Blucher's Reef under the bye-laws, and are about to place powerful machmery on the claim: they consider that they will be able t{) obtain sufficient water for the stampers from the reef, as the waterlevel is only 112 feet· from the surface. .

A plan is furnished, on a small scale, on whi.ch you will perceive that the alluVial diggings closely hugs the line of reef; this is also observable through Emu alluvial workings to the north of the plan, and also along its supposed course in a southerly direction through McCullough's paddock, and near to the Sadowa Company's workings.

A prospectfug quartz claim has been surveyed at Emu, the stone of which is of a blueish-white colour and easy to work, so that two men have obtained 31~ ozs. of gold in four or five week~. 'l'heprospector gave it the name of N uggety Reef, but on laying it down in plan 1 found it to be a spur of Blucher's Reef. ... .

In allUvial mining the greatest improvement is in the Sadowa Claim, the increase d1ll'ing the quarter being 559 0:1.8. of gold.. .

A number of nuggets have been found through the' shallow alluvial workings, varying from 1 to 150zs., but the shallow ground, as a rule, does not give sufficient wages, unless puddling or sluicing is resorted to. '

The Nil Desperandum Alluvial Company, near Talbot, (which is held under the bye-laws), have just completed their good machinery and shaft of 160 feet deep, and are now engaged in the formation, of the working chamber.

The mining interests in this district, more particularly in the. Tarnagulla division, for the past thrce months, have improved materi:111y. ",., • ,

In the Tarnagulla !iivision, the progress'o~ the defined reefs have considerably advanced. Since my last report, some new reefs have been opened with encouraging prospects, and the shareholders are very sanguine of suc, gess.

In the Dunolly division mining interests have advanced but little. In alluvial, I have nothing fresh to communicate. Several parties of Chinamen are steadily engaged in working, out ground on the old leads, with what result it is difficult to ascertain. Three new reefs have been discovered, but, at present, it would be premature to speak as to their auriferous "'Thlue: Tj:!e prospectors, however, seem ~o entertain great hopes of success.

The Goldsl;lorough Company have been sinking a new shaft toa depth of 180 feet, and are putting ina cross-cut at that level to strike the reef, which they expect·to do in about three weeks. 'To the east of the main r~ef a new lode .has been discovered underlying west and dipping ~outh 1 foot in 6 feet; this has been opened 180 feet in length, is 6 feet thick, well'defined, and, bearing very payable gold. Towards, the north ,the stone appears to be cutting out. They have also completed the erection of a 35 horse-power'engine, for pumpiIlg and winding purposes, and in the new shaft have lO-inch lifts and plunger.. Nothing more has been 'done' to the' antimony mine since my last report. The holde~s of the ground are, I am inforined, trying to tnake terms with some l\:1elbourne men, with a view to opening out the mme. :

Tarnagulla Division.

'Sandstone Recf.-South Sandstone 'Company have 70, tons'.of quartz on the surface, which they anticipate will yield It ois. of gold per ton, and their prospects'are improving; the stone in the water looking better than everreef 6 feet thick. In the prospecting claim, the reefat the 260 feet level is 8 feet thick, the average yield from 3 feet of which is Ii OZS., and the remainder t oz. per ton.: The Victoria Company, next north, 'are raising stone from the 260 feet level"':"reef from 3 to 5 feet thick-:-and expected to yield 15 dwts. per ton. They are erecting powerful pumping and winding machinery. The next claim north are sinking for the same run of stone worked by the Victoria Company. ' , " .

New Chum Reef.-Cambrian Company.-The water shaft is down about 328 feet, and from which they are raising stone taken from the 312 feet level, where the reef is 9 feet thick: their prospects continue as good as ever. They have 170 loads of stone now on the surface, 'and are raising, on an average, 90 loads per week. Prince of Wales Company, next north, have their shaft down 279 feet. 'A cross-cut ha.s been put in at 248 feet; and, on the 29th June they cut the reef~ with gold visible in every stone, which has very much enhanced the value of the shares. No.4 South are taking out stone at.22 feet level, which is payable 4 feet thick. Nos. 1,2, and 3 South (amalgamated) struck stone in the main shaft at, 256 feet level. Gold is visible, but none ha.s yet been crushed. '

Watts' Reef.-TlJ.e Perseverance Company are raising stone from the Water Shaft-reef 4 .feet thick-and , ,expected to yield from 1 to It ozs. per ton. :&celsior Company; next south, are taking out stone from t.he Water

shaft, the reef is 4 feet thick, and encouraging prospects. They are also raising stone 90 feet south of the watershaft', below the block. When pr'evioualy worked, yielded 6 ozs. 'per fon ;' it is stilliookiiig very rich, but none has yet been crushed 1)y either' company since they resumed work. ' "

Specimen Reef.-Gullyand Party are raising good stone, but have not lately crushed any; they have about 30 tons on the surface. Their last crushing yielded 1 oz, per ton: '" ,

Rise and, Shine Company, Stubbs's Reef, are sinking their shaft 30 feet df;leper, making a total depth of 126 feet. On the Poverty Reef some'tributors are still working; and, I am' informed, making very fair'wages.

Iron Bark.-Williams and Party are raising stone, which, from appearances, 'is'likely to yield 3 ozs. per ton. The reef is from 3 feet to 4 feet 6 inches thick; none has yet been crushed. '

Corfu Reef.-The Garibaldi Company are raising quartz from the 160 feet level, where the reef is 4 feet thick. They have 20 tons on the surface, which promises a good yield. They are also sinking a new shaft at the extreme north of their ground, and at 42 feet struck very payable stone,'whehthe und'adjoining was immediately taken up, and a company formed called "The Last Chance." They started a and at 29 feet deep struck a reef 5 feet thick, 2 feet of which is expected (from the appearance of the stone) to yield 5 OZ8. of gold per ton. Manchester Company, south of the Garibaldi, are sinking a new shaft to get on the stone work,ed by the latter company, 19 tons from which yielded 5 ozs. per ton; they are now down 90 feet.' .

Specimen Reef, Cay's Diggings.-This reef, which has been abandoned and lying idle eight years, was taken up by the 'I'ry-me·well Company about two months since. They sunk a shaft beside the old workings, which had fallen in considerably, and at about 40 feet struck a body of quartz from 3 feet to 7 feet thick. The first 22 tons

. crushed yielded 30 ozs. lOdwts .. of gold. They have now about 7? tons on the surface equally good. Two claims north are sinking for the ilame stone, but have not yet struck anythmg payable. The Kangaroo Reef Company have registered under the Limited Liability Act, and have invited tenders for sinking a new shaft. From Moliagal and Cochrane's I have nothing fresh to report. At Tunstall's the shallow alluvial ground is pretty well worked out, and the population is 4ecreasing. '

. The Pioneer Silver Mining Company have crushed, from the Rotten Reef, stuff broken from the depth of 100 feet to the surface, 774 tons, yielding gold and silver alloy 2,505 ozs. 9 dwts. '

There is nothing of striking interest to notice for the last quarter. The works are proceeding regularly in all the undertakings, and mostly with a good average of'success. .

The Bell Rock indications are important for an extensive mine; and this is thEi:more important in consequence of its being isolated in a locality abounding in large reefs almost untried, but, nevertheless, showing gold.

In alluvial mining there is nothing of importance to report; the old workings and appliances remain much the same as last quarter; the only alluvial companies. the .Belmore and St. Margaret's, maintain their usual returns, and small rushes in Milkmaid's Flat and Oampbell's Creek employ a few miners with only poor results.

In quartz mining we can again report progress. The Ajax Company ar(;l again successful. The mine is now divided into eight "pitches" or separate working parties-seven parties of 6 men each, one of 14 men, and 4 men prospecting, making 60 men employed. 977 tons raised, yielded 601 ozs. IS dwts. 1S,grs., the product. at different depths, 'being a2 follows :-Two surface tributes, 390 tons, average 11 dWLS. 16'IS grs. per ton; three pitches to ISO feet deep. 287 tons, average '7 dwts. 16'76 grs. per ton; No.3, at 240 feet level, 241 tons, ,yield-average 9 dwts. lS'33 grs. per ton; and No, S, at 270 feet level, 69 tons, gave, on an average, 2 ozs.l dwt. 22'79 grs. per ton. The surface workings are on north end of lease, the others, vertically, one under the other. The tribute varies from 25 per cent. to 32~ per cent., clear of expenses, and out of the above yield a dividend of £500 has been paid. ThcI:e are two reefs unopened within the company's leases, upon which the company offer to each prospeeting party a claim of 100 yards. * * *

The NuggetyTributors have been crushing for 2 dwts. per ton until last week when they received 16 ozs. from 13 tons; much of the old workings have fallen in, the attle having been raised to surface, instead of supporting the mine. They have a good engine shaft 270 feet deep, from which, driving 30 feet west, two lodes, 2 feet and 3 feet wide respectively, were cut. 'Doubtless a splendid mine lavs west of the old workings. .

,The South Ajax, also the Boss Ajax mines, have agaill been let on tribute. On the Eureka Reef, Harris and Oompany have the deepest workings in this division, viz. :-280 feet, 140 below

water-level: the reef carries a regular head-wall all down, but the width of reef varies from 6 feet to 16 feet, making to the greater width in the foot-wall, then again contracting, where, as at 140 to 160 feet, 2 ozs. per ton was obtained. At 280 feet the reef is 6 feet wide, averages 5 dwts. per ton. with excellent indications of improved yields.

On the South Eureka an auriferous slate reef is being worked which yields 9 dwts. per ton. This slate is distinct, with regular w:alls, nearly vertical, average width 9 inches, of the. same character as usually accompanies auriferous deposits. . , Upon the Nimrod Reef the returns are small, in consequence of most of the claims being worked to water-level,

112 feet. The claimholders are about to amalgamate and sink a shaft 300 teet upon which to placc an engine to drain and wind from all claims interested. Rich deposits are proved to exist under the water-level, above which over 12,000 ozs. have been obtained, the average yield being 1 oz. to ,the ton.

New Machinery.-Oonsiderable additions are being made to our crushing machinery. The Hit·or.Miss Company, Wattle Gully, have nearly erected a 16 horse-power horizontal engine with two batteries of 5 stamps each; north, on the Bame reef, Vivian and Company have a 12 horse-power engine and pumping gear erecting on their lease. Again, north on the Chew ton Reef, Powell and Company have erected an 8 horse. power locomotive with 150 feet of 6·inch pumps; and on the Argus Reef, Jenkin and Company have just completed the removal of their engine and plant, making seven engines upon this line within 1~ miles.

New reefs in Mosquito Gully,-A flat lode has been opened, from which splendid specimens, as heavy as 1 oz. each, have been taken; no crushing has yet been made. , On Clinker's Hill, supposed in line with the Bolivia Reef, a new reef has been opened, a crushing of 17 tons

, yielded 13 ozs. 8 dwts,; and in Wattle Gully, Walker and Company have struck rich gold at the south end of reef, and ~~e North Abutment QO!ll'pany at the north :nd reef, as at prese~t workin~,

QUARTZ MINING.

Quartz mining is assuming a more healthy app,~arance. The advent of two new steam engines is a sure index that the attention of the mining community is being directed to the numerous reefs existing in this locality .

. . Messrs. Mills; Hilton, and Co., have been engaged during the past three months sinking new shafts and erecting machinery, coriseqri~ntly no quartz has been raised; this has materially affected the gross returns.

", Messrs. Rowe and Co., who occupy a claim about 200 feet to the south of the Duke of Cornwall, have already sunk a shaft to a depth of 140 feet, and 76 feet below the water level; at the 140 feet level the reef is from 2 to 3 feet wi4e, ~j~~dtngt, 9~. to th~i ton.. . ' .

NEW:REEFS.

It is satisfactOry to be enabled, occasionally, to record the fact of a new quartz reef being 'opened, especially when the discoverers have been many months engaged prospecting. The locale of the present reef is about three miles south of Vaughan township. Although the vein of quar"z now being worked is very narrow (4 inches), it is exceedingly rich; 27 ozs. 7 dwts. having been obtained from a trial crushing of 2 tons. The prospectors of the claim have followed the leader to a depth of, 30 feet, and expect meeting with a properly defined reef ere many weeks have elapsed. It is believed that in the neighborhood of Middleton's Creek good quartz reefs are to be found; the external features of the hills bear out such an idea. A properly organized prospecting association would do well to explore this part' of the district. . ,

RED HILL, FRYERSTOWN.

The accompanying sectional drawings have been prepared with the view of drawing attention to various remarkable features in connexion with the formation of the hiIrto which they refer •.

This hill comprises an area of from twelve to fourteen acres, and has been more or less worked without intermission during the past fourteen years. 1'he hill being of.alluvial formation, and comparatively shallow sinking (greatest depth 12 to 15 feet), and exceedingly rich in its auriferous deposits, nearly the whole of the earth to the bed rock, has been carted away by the puddlers. ' .

The peculiar features with reference to this hill consist in four bottoms having been originally discovered, the goJd bearing properties of which have proved highly remunerative. Nos. 1, 2, q, (marked on drawings) are characterised by the miners asfalse bottoms, consisting of seams of sand and pipe clay, varying much in thickness and gold bearing character. No.4 comprising drift and clay resting upon the bed rock, being generally assumed as the only gold bearing strata: indeed it is customary to sink through the different layers of sand, gravel, and clay, without ascertaining at different depths whether gold exists upon th,e various seams intersected. As it is possible there are many hills scattered over the various mining districts, showing external features similar to the one herein describe«, and if more closely examined might lead to the discovery of different bottoms, la.'1Jers, or seams, during the process of sinking, it would appear not undesirable to direct the attention of the mining community to facts and figures relative to yields from the auriferous deposits described ;-

'pyrites is being carefully collected for future treatment, a trial bucket of mundic having produced over 24 ozs. of gold. , The Duke of Edinburgh Quartz Mining Company are on the ground formerly occupied by the' Havelock and North Crown'Companies; their second engine is no\v being erected, and a shaft is sunk to'a depth of 300 feet, striking the reef at that depth, with gold visible in the quartz.

The Sp~ci'f!len Hill Quart.<; Mining Company are sinking for a 280 feet level, where,a rieh re,ef is kno:w.n to exist; the returns have been uniform in the upper levels during the past three months, 1,673 tons of quartz, averaging

, 6 dwts. 0'97 grs: to the ton. ' . . .. .. ..., ' At Yandoit, quartz mining continues to improve. Several l)arties are prospecting, and decided signs of activity

are again manifesting themselves in this once favored quarter. , , The William Tell, at Sailor's Hill Reef, have resumed work during the past month; they have, from 130 tons.

of quartz, obtained 6 dwts. 2'40 grs. per ton. _ , At Mauritius Reef; great exeitement prevails, in consequence of the fence on the east boundary of the New

United Freehold Company's ground being-found to be too much to the west, and a prospect from a shaft now going down in the paddock, and, at a depth of ,50 feet, showing gold in very great quantity. .

The St. George's Reef Quartz Company have erected an engine on their elaim, and are nearly ready to erush. This reef is southerly from the Mauritius,Reef, and. great expectations are consequently raised.

- Mr. Lucini Pietro has also completed the erection of his engine at Commissioner's Reef. They are going down with a shaft, but have also'an old tunnel from whieh payable quartz has been obtained.

Frenchman's Reef, Blind Creek, a prospecting party of six men were rewarded with £17 per man for one week, after several trial crnshlngs; the next week, £52 per man was got. There is little doubt but that scores of reefs in this division would show the same results if sydematieally worked.

, ') Wombat Hill.-Two companies have united for the purpose of re-working the alluvial lead running' north. easterly from the old crater; ninety men's additional ground has been reeently registered. '

The Astley United are working their claim with 00 men, and are in 800 feet south.easterly. 'rhe junction of the Wombat Hill and Astley gutters is proved beyond a doubt; the Astley gutter is 120 feet in width at present, with 6 to 8 feet of washdirt; the Wombat Hill lead being 35 feet wide, with from 6 inches to 2 feet 6 inches of wash.

,dirt. The influx of water has been so gre~t, since the removal of the Perseverance Company's engine and plant, that 12.inch pumps are being put in; they have crushed 8,160 tons of'stuft; realizing the excellent return of 1 dwt. 18'87 grs. per ton. Had the company been able to continue at full work during the whole quarter the returns would have been increased. ' "

The 'Cosmopolitan Company are transferring their plant to their north shaft, in order to work the Fern Hill lead, which has recently been struck by the Galatea Company; the shaft is down 180 feet; the stratification comprised roek, rotten rock, elay, and gravel, beneath the alluvium the bed rock being slaty, and through which they eontinued sinking. . '

The Galatea Company opened out at 134 feet, driving westwards, and struck the gutter at a short distance from the shaft. A trial crushing of 30 tons' gave 4 ozs. 8 dwts., or 3 dwts; 7'53 grs. to the ton of three trncks.

The Fern Hill Company are vigorously pushing on their works. . The Perseverance Gold Mining Company have sunk a new shaft westwards of their old one; the gutter came in

from the Pride of the Hill and Wallaby 'ground boundary very shallow, the \vashdirt being struck at 90 feet, and the present position of the new shaft will enable the company to work highly advantageously: .

The Corinella Paddock, at Blanket Flat, continues to yield well; 220 men are engaged in' this paddock. -The Daylesford Extension Gold Mining Company continue working their gutter advantageously; the prospects

are mueh improved during the latter half of the quarter.. . , Alluvial workings, not specially named, are in general doing passably; and, the men eilgaged in them earn

suffieient, in general, ·to keep themselves tolerably comfortable during about four months, or from that to six; very few working as miners duriug the whole year. .

Puddlers and sluicers, except in or near to the beds of creeks, are anxiously awaiting water. 1'he alluvial mining population has increased considerably during the quarter; but until a eomprehensve water

supply, with a perpetual he1id at Ii high level, is obtained,' sluicing and puddling will not be possible for more' than two-fifths of the year. Quartz prospecting goes on as usual, and occasionally specimens, that prove the existence of numerous unworked reefs, present themselves.

" ' f) NOTE.-Mr. Hale hos fOrWlll'ded to the Ofllce 01 blillcs sections sllowing the wOl'kings of the Perseverance Gold lIIinlog Company above referred to.

ALLUVIAL MINING.

Nothing new has occurred in the shallow workings here during the quarter, except the opening of the Botanical gardens, and the adjacent ground in proximity to the Taradale Viaduct! whi?h is yielding satisfactory results. The lead seems to tend towards Mr. Urquhart's paddo'ck, east of the Hlberman, Golden Hope, Lady Darling, and Park lead claims; the three latter are idle, but are likely to be taken up and worked to profit •

. The claim I alluded to in my last report, viz., Tibb and party. as obtaining very coarse gold from the Cambrian ground, are now tunnelling the hill, driving south-east under the trap formation, and have proved various gutters all running towards the Great Central claim. The gold they obtain is generally found on the reef sloping eastwards.

,South of the Great Central claim is the Lord Malmsbury claim, still idle, although there is a good shaft sunk to the depth of 235 feet, and a level opened out at 225 feet on the top of a gutter, with a heavy wash, the depth of which has not yet been proved, but wash-dirt obtained at this level yielded 11 ozs. to the machine.

The party who took up the Rising Sun claim, now called the" Try-again," are energetically at work putting in their main drive, and daily expect to be on the gutter. The great abundance of water ,with which they have to contend. impedes their progress; besides, in this claim is a drift such as is found in the Lord Malmsbury south, and the London and Melbourne, and other claims north-west of this claim. A. drive was lost last week in the London and Melbourne claim by 'this drift; and but a few, weeks ago, an accident occurred at the London through the same cause, wllereby one man lost his life: miners say it is a similar drift to that obtaining at Ballarat.

QUARTZ MINING. '

The Achilles Company are still sinking their ,shaft deeper, so that the water may be discharged from the workings into the well-hole, and they will be better able to obtain 'stone at a lower level. The lack of application of scientific skill in the working of this mine in former years has entailed numerons difficulties and an nnnecessary outlay of a large amount of capital. It is one of those mines which, with skilful and cheap management, will pay for years to come. The last small lot of stone crushed by this company yielded half an ounce to the ton.

The Lord Newry, cr Old Belltopper Company, have let their mine on tribute, the tributors are obtaining stone yielding 9 or 10 dwts. per ton, with an engine and battery on the Claim, that pays them, although the stone is very hard, and the reef but narrow.

, A new reef was discovered about a month ago in the parish of Emberton, about nine miles north-east of Tal'adale, approaching the Barfold BaDges. Several claims have been marked off and taken up, three of which have got 'gold. The prospectors have obtained highly auriferous stone, likely to yield 5 or 6 ozs. per ton; but as they have not yet had a trial crushing, I cannot report the correct yield. No, 1 North and No. 1 South have each struck the gold. ,

There has been, but a poor yield this quarter for the number of tons' crushed; the public crushings have been generally low, and the parcels small, which may be accounted for by the large amount of prospecting going on in 'old reefs, many men during the quarterbeirigl, out of·, constant, employment, consequent on the Union, Beehive, Great Western and Derby Oompanies having, more or less, eeased work or reduced their hands underground.

In the' Esperance Oompimy's claim, on Linscott's Reef, at about 380 feet deep, a new reef has been discovered about 4 feet west of the old lode; which pinched out. The new reef shows prospects of, gold, but has not been opened out upon, the shareholders having determined to sink deeper. ;' ,-

There is still a general dullness in quartz mining in this distri(,lt, which is tllemore apparent in the neighborhood of Queenstown, from the fact of several of its denizens having taken up claims at Anderson's Creek. As there are many other parties who have recently been attracted to this locality, and machinery is being constructed for crushing by water-power on the Yarra, I 'consid~r it 'probable that a general'resumption of reefing operations may follow. Many of the reefs that have been so long abandoned are well known to be payable under the altered and recently reduced charges for crushing and cartage. '

The Victoria or Nelson Company (One-tree Hill) made a further trial crushing of 18 tons of stone recently, which yielded 17 ozs. of gold. The lessees are now about-to drive their tunnel a further distance of 150 feet; and if the ground. would prove a little more encouraging extend their operations.

The only change 'in alluvial mining is the fact of a slight rush having taken place to some ground near the western boundary of the township of Queentown, known as the" Slaughter. yard Rush." The sinking is the deepest of any in the district; being about 60 feet; but the best claims have only paid from £3 to £3 lOs, per manler week. , The river workings at Anderson's Creek are now all suspended, owing to the ri~ing of the river. II have done

remarkably well, with only one exception. The claim called the "Graball " yielded to four men, for four months' work, 930zs. of gold, and. at the time of its suspension, the clainlholders state that their ground had only been begun upon.

The Happy-go-Lucky claim of Lee and Oargills, situated a short distance higher ul? the river, yielded from 30 tubs of wash.dirt, 3 ozs. to the tub; the last 6 feet of drift having given 10 OZS., the clrom being now registered for future resumption, as soon as the Yarra falls sufficiently to admit of the same being worked. Q

I have no hesitation in stating that nearly all the alluvial miners located on the south side of the Yarra have made very fair wages during"the past quarter; and th~fr prospec't'id'or the futUl.'e seehI"moI'e defined and certain from the local knowledge acquired, most of them having been residents for several years in the neighborhood.

QUA~T2i MINING.

The returns in this important branch of mining operations continue very dull. ' The Prince Alfred Gold Mining Oompany, on the Frenchman's Reef, Kangaroo, have ceased to work from their

tunnel and have sunk their shaft deeper, and let a portion of the mine to tributors, who anticipate satisfactory results, alt!lough the stone lately has been very poor. '

The Wellington still continues to work without very favorable results. -A new reef was recently discovered, about ten miles north:west of Kyneton, in the Seven-mile Forest. A

trial crushing 'has just been completed, yielding 1 oz. 3 d wts. per ton. ClaiIDs are marked off for over a mile on the supposed lode., The only claims at work yet are on private propcrty.

Alluvial mining in this division during the last quarter has not presented any important novelties. The number of diggeI:s, both European and Chinese, remain but slightly altered. Several small patches of auriferous alluvium have been found amongst the old workings, affording temporary employment to small groups of miners; but the majority are engaged in fossicking old ground. Great interest exists as to the issue of the immense preparations making by the Ararat Black Lead Uompany, who have already expended upwards of £23,000 on their works. From a depth of 196 feet in their shaft they have put in a horizontal'chamber 300 feet in length, an~ at 270 feet from the shaft they are putting up a rise through the schist to reach the auriferous drift; the work has advanced 26 feet of about 40 feet the estimated height of the, drift above the chamber; they expect to reach the drift in a few days. The water, which originally stoo.d at 18 feet below ,the surface of the ground, makes at the rate of ~6,000 gallons per hour.

In quartz mining I have to report a steady advance. At Oampbell's Reef, Moyston, the North Star have, from a depth of 296 feet, raised 1,626 tons of stone, yielding 976 ozs. of gold.

The Southern Cross have been engaged improving their machinery, at the same time they sunk their working shaft an additional 100 feet, making its total depth 510 feet. They are now taking out stone from three levels simultaneously. No stone has been crushed during the quarter. They employ 21 men at present.

The Northern Perseverance Company have raised, from a depth of 140 feet, 370 tons of stone, yielding 100i ozs. of gold. They employ 8 to 12 men.

?,he Kangaroo Company have, from a depth of 500 feet, raised 1,200 tons of stone, yielding 480ozs. of gold. They employ 45 men.

At Moor's Reef, Ararat, reefing has been at a stand. The Noah's Ark Company, failing to find payable stone, have, for want of funds, stopped work; and the whole leased ground, with the machinery and works, have been transferred to a new company. This stoppage of the Noah's Ark has affected the other leased claims in its vicinity, and they are all at a stand still.

The reefs at Armstrong's, during a period extending over eight or ten years, have been tried on and off with prospects that would now be payable with the advantages of improved machinery and low priced crushing. The Eaglehawk Reef fairly promises to be the best that has yet been opened in the district. When the Eaglehawk claim was taken up by the present company, a few months ago, a shaft was sunk, and from a well defined reef, nearly 2 feet in thickness, 80 tons of stone ,were taken, which yielded 9 dwts. of gold per ton; the stone evidently improving to the northward. The company are preparing to erect efficient machinery, and will get to work with as liUle delay as possible. '

Two other quartz mining leases have been applied for on the same line of reef and adjacent to the Eaglehawk Company's. Several claims have also been takcn up under the Mining Bye-laws, and prospecting is being earnestly carried on. The locality of this reef is regarded by 'many experienced miners as the most promising new reefing district of the west, as it is believed that all the reefs are the same as those worked to so much advantage at Pleasant Creek.

. QUARTZ.

The various mines in this locality continue in a most prosperous condition, and the quantity of stone raised, as well as the average return 9f gold obtained therefrom, have materially increased. The want of sufficient crnshing power, however, has been inconveniently felt, so that several claims were obliged to reduce their hands from time to time, in consequence of the large ~nantity of uncrnshed stone remaining on the claim. This will be shortly remedied by the introduction of three additional engines and 160 head of stampers.

The Flat Cross Reef has been unusually productive in claim No.7 North. This is the more encouraging, as at t~is point it has reac~ed a d:pth of. 500 feet. Here, also, it presents a new and interesting featur.e, namely, rich speCImens of gold assoCIated WIth pyrItes. '

On the Scotchman's line eleven claims are producing gold, their average being over 1 oz. per ton. . A new reef has been struck in the extreme northern claim, on the Perthshire Reef, at a depth of about 200 feet, the trial kiln yielded 1 oz, 2 dwts. per ton. This reef has been broken into for a distance of 7 feet across its course without getting through it, so that it must:be of considerable thickness; in consequence of this discovery, shares have advanced considerably in value along the'whole .Perthshire Reef. '

On the South Scotchman's, the Rose of Denmark Company have, after a suspension of nearly two years, resumed work, and being assis~ed by the adjoining claims, have commenced sinking their shaft, which they propose carrying down to a depth of 600 feet;, benefit has, acoordingly, been felt already by the adjoining claims, in the shape of drainage, so that several have been enabled to continue sinking their shafts below the original water-leveL

Qn the Hampshire Reef considcrable activity prevails, but no payable stone has yet been discovered. Further south, the W onga-W onga Rccf is yielding vcry good returns in Henderson's Prospecting claim, but the adjoining claims, with one exception, have been unable as yet to discovl'lf tpe continuatioI;! of this lode.

"

ALLUVIAL.

I cannot !!peak so favorably of the prospects of alluvial mining: there' i~ a falling off in the number of European while there is a slight increase in Chinese. At present the superior attraction of .the quartz reefs causes alluvial prosp'ecting to pe altogether neglected. However, tllere appears to be but very trifling (if any) falling off in the produce of gold from the old leads, and those at present working them seem well satisfied with the returns ob'tained." "

. " ~ommercial Street Leads are almost exclusively in the hands of Chinese, and the same may be said of the Eastern part of the 'Deep Lead. , ,

_ . The Standard Company, on the Deep Lead, are persevering, and in the face of great difficulties have erected an engine, alfd are proceeding vigorously with their work; having overcome the water which at ,first threatene;;l to be a serious obStacle. J They have got their sJiaft down to a depth of 90 feet, with every' indication of being on the deep, ground. , '

There is very little doing at the Great Western, and at Shakespere Hill the lead has been lost for the present, and that diggings all but abandoned.

Most of the alluvial claims at Swift's Creek continue to be suspended for want of water, and many of the Chinese formerly engaged there, aided by some of their countrymen from the Buckland, have availed themselves of the unusual lowness of the water to take up and work' a considerable extent of ground as river claims on the Tambo, from Swift's Creek downwards. .

An extensive tunnel and tailrace have just been completed by the New Adventure ComJ?any, by cutting through a 'high rocky bluff, known as the Frenchman's Hill, on Livingstone Creek, opposite the township. It will enable the company to re'·work a considerable portion of the best part of the creek, and probably employ a number of hired hands. ,

New reefs continue to be discovered on the banks of the Upper Bendoc, near Delegate !'[ount8.in, which dominates a large area of proved auriferous country. At Wombat Creek and Cobungara there is no change worthy of note.

·NOTE.-Mi', Phipps has forwarded to the Office of Mines a photograph of the New Adventure tunnel and tailrace above referred to .

The recent favorable accounts from the Upper Bendoc a;nd Alexandra goldfields have caused about .one hundred of the miners to leave this division. A number have also left for Queensland. , , '

The stagnatiou in quartz mining mentioned in my last report continues. The miners in the alluvial clainis continue to earn fair wages. Some of the claimholders have been cOmpelled

to suspend operations during the last two months, owing to a want of sufficient water. A number of parties have been, and are, out prospecting in the creeks and gullies on the eastern side of Mount Taylor. On one of these cJ;eeks, known as Clifton, a prospecting and several ordinary creek claims have been registered. I am informed by' one of the prospectors that he and his mates earn from 50s. to 60s. per week each.

, The principal item of importance is the abandonment of the Hibernian mine by the Ken't Company, after a trial of over two years. The company have gone to very great expense in erecting crushing machinery, and also in sinking shafts and putting in ,drives for the purpose of prospecting the mine; but although the stone taken out appears to be sufficiently rich to pay for raising, yet, from the limited supply of water available for crnshing, 'they have been compelled to discharge the hands and abandon the reef. This is the more to be regretted from the fact that there is at the present time over 100 tons of stone at the ~ill which they are unable to crush. It is the intention of the company, I believe, to remove the whole of their mining plant to some.other part of the division. '

The Good Hope Company have been very successful this quarter, having crushed 639 tons of quartz, yielding' 2,101 OZ8. of gold. They bve also operated on 12 tons of pyrites, from which they obtained 485 ozs., being an average of 40 ozs. 8 dwts. to the ton. 'rp.e pyrites from this reef is of three qualities, numbered 1, 2, and 3. No.1 is taken from the blankets, and Nos. 2 and 3 are saved by means of the percussion tables patented by Mr. H. A. Thomson, and improved upon by the present manager of thc Good Hope Company. No.1 is by far the richest in quality; 1,900 lbs. of it gave a return of 120 ozs. 3 dwts. The company are pushing on vigorously with their lower level; it is already in over 200 feet, and they exgect to drive 900 feet further ,before cutting the vein. They have still three months' work for their full complement of men above the present level. , On the Upper Dargo the Evening Star and John Oonnees. are the only reefs from which any stone has been

crushed, if I except a few tons crushed on trial from the Walthamstow. ' The John Conness Reef has been paying so badly of late that the company have determined to abandon it,

and purpose removing their mill to some reef in the neighborhood of Grant. , In alluvial mining I have very little change to report. On the Twenty-five and Thirty-mile Creeks the miners,

are making fair wages, and a few parties are doing well on the Middle Dargo.

The Eldorado men continue to drive their tunnel for opening up and working their claim economically. The dry weather has been rather fav.orable, to this division, since, without flooding the claims, there has been

sufficient water to carry on alluvial mining; while, on the other hand, the reefs were not sufficiently forward to have been inconvenieneed by the short supply.
