Biography Dato' Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek is a Malaysian politician. He is the Minister of Communication and Multimedia in the Barisan Nasional coalition government, and sits in Parliament as the member for Kemaman, Terengganu. He represents the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He was elected to the Supreme Council of UMNO in 2009. Dato' Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was born in Kijal, Kemaman, Terengganu, on December 10, 1958, and received his early education at Sekolah Sungai Lembing and Sekolah Datuk Abdul Razak in Seremban. In 1983, Dato' Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek pursued a course in economics at Universiti Malaya. In 1986 he obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. In 1989 he obtained a postgraduate diploma in International Relations from the Uppsala University in Sweden. That same year, Dato Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was appointed the Secretary of the Malaysian Social Science Association (PSSM). In 1990 Dato Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was appointed Lecturer at the Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Economics and Administration and also served as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore. In April 2009, current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak appointed him as the Minister for Youth and Sports. He had previously served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. As Minister of Youth and Sports YB. Dato' Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek did several changes to the "concept" in organizing the Ministry's programmes, including in Hari Belia Negara 2010, which saw a large youth turnout. With tagline of "Seribu Peluang, Sejuta Keriangan", more than 250,000 youths gathered in Putrajaya and various youth organizations conducted 88 different programs and activities. However after 13th General Election, he was appointed as Minister of Communication and Multimedia under the new cabinet lineup of Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
