AUGUST 2009 News for the Parents, Grandparents, Alumni, Faculty & Staff, and Friends of Holy Spirit Prep School SERVING AS HE CAME TO SERVE: OUR FAITH COMMUNITY As we reflect upon the many gifts God has bestowed on us, it is important to note that Christ’s mission to serve others unselfishly is also the mission of our school: Ministrare non Ministrari (to serve not to be served). Holy Spirit Prep hopes to instill within its students the same mission Christ possessed such that upon graduation, they take this mission with them into adulthood. While the vocations and professions in which our alumni pursue may vary, our aim is that all Holy Spirit Prep graduates live their lives to serve others unselfishly and not themselves. Christ instructs that “…whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave; even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt 20: 26-28). This paradox of true greatness through servitude is a foundational philosophy to which all Holy Spirit Prep’s students, alumni, and staff members strive to fully grasp, and the reality of this mission should be a guide throughout our everyday lives. During this coming 2009–2010 school year, efforts to emphasize our apostolate mission to care for others include service projects at every grade level on all three campuses. The Preschool service opportunities are focused on assisting the Solidarity Mission. At the Lower School, service opportunities will be abundant throughout the year. Endeavors in this area will involve our students in preparing food and organizing basic essentials for those in need; reading buddy programs linking students in third grade and fourth grades to students in preschool and kindergarten; monthly visits by fifth-grade students to the Solidarity mission to introduce the virtue of the month to preschoolers; and sixth-grade service projects that will include monitoring energy conservation and maintaining the cleanliness of our campus. At the Upper School campus, faculty and students will expound the foundation of caring for others that is being built at our Lower School. Endorsing the fruits born of self–sacrifice and giving to others, HSP aspires to commit its upper school students to characteristics promoted in The Holy See’s Teaching on Catholic Schools: “overcoming individualistic self–promotion, solidarity instead of competition, assisting the weak instead of marginalization, responsible participation instead of indifference.” Consistent with years past, the Upper School breaks service into two general categories, Community Service and School Service. The School requires a minimum number of hours for both yearly, and students can look forward to a variety of opportunities for community service this year. Moda Real and Campeona Real provide faith and character formation in girls and boys from the Hispanic community. Project Literacy will support the Solidarity School. Like Project Zambia in years past, Project Literacy constitutes a club with numerous service opportunities for all students, including a benefit concert in the spring. Stewardship of the Environment will be a recycling club that is open to all grade levels. Our 7 th and 8 th grade students will focus on a Feeding the Poor program involving planting fruit trees around campus and keeping greenhouses. This hands-on experience teaches junior high students biology, stewardship, and generosity. Serving aS He came to Serve:our FaitH community

As we reflect upon the many gifts God has bestowed on us, it is important to note that Christ’s mission to serve others unselfishly is also the mission of our school: Ministrare non Ministrari (to serve not to be served).

Endeavors in this area will involve our students in preparing food and organizing basic essentials for those in need; reading buddy programs linking students in third grade and fourth grades to students in preschool and kindergarten; monthly visits by fifth-grade students to the Solidarity mission to introduce the virtue of the

month to preschoolers; and sixth-grade service projects that will include monitoring energy conservation and maintaining the cleanliness of our campus. At the Upper School campus, faculty and students will expound the foundation of caring for others that is being built at our Lower School. Endorsing the fruits born of self–sacrifice and giving to others, HSP aspires to commit its upper school students to characteristics promoted in The Holy See’s Teaching on Catholic Schools: “overcoming individualistic self–promotion, solidarity instead of competition, assisting the weak instead of marginalization, responsible participation instead of indifference.”

Consistent with years past, the Upper School breaks service into two general categories, Community Service and School Service.

Our 7th and 8th grade students will focus on a Feeding the Poor program involving planting fruit trees around campus and keeping greenhouses. This hands-on experience teaches junior high students biology, stewardship, and generosity.

Gareth N. Genner, President, Holy Spirit College & Preparatory SchoolWhile many of our fellow schools have suffered tremendously from the recession this year, we have remarkably been blessed with continued growth in enrollment and generous philanthropic support from the Holy Spirit Prep family. Many in our community have been impacted by the international economic crisis but have chosen to continue to invest in their child(ren) as their top priority; making tough choices that place education

and faith formation before many less important expenditures. Our school and community continue to be counter-cultural in our shared commitment to a value system that is based upon all that is true, beautiful and eternal rather than that which is transient and of no significant substance. As a result of this commitment by our families we are able enter the 2009–2010 school year with many facility and programmatic upgrades

from enhanced preschool facilities (look out for Miss Dara’s Palace) and audio visual facilities and programs in the lower and upper school through to the new college classrooms that we will start to occupy in January and remarkable new college courses for high school students and adult learners alike. Thank you all for your continued support and for entrusting us with your students; we have another exciting year ahead!

The students will give all produce harvested to Solidarity School families. All grades will be involved in food drives for the Solidarity pantry.

In addition to the Community Service, all 7th – 9th grade students must complete service hours for the school. Students in 9th – 12th grade can earn these by working concessions, tickets, open houses, etc. Students in 7th and 8th grade, under the supervision of their House Captains, Vice Captains, and Prefects, fulfill hours by ensuring that the buildings and grounds are kept tidy and litter free.

It cannot be over-stressed that while there is no lack of service projects for students to undertake, an essential element that must precede and continually compliment service is each student’s belief in and commitment to the efficacy of giving. This element is derived and nurtured in the school’s Faith Community. The students are informed in a practical, experimental way through numerous mandatory and optional faith-based retreats and activities which are specifically designed to meet the spiritual needs of those participating. These retreats and activities involve not only students and chaperones, but also faculty, staff, parents and families of the Holy Spirit Prep community.

Deacon Tom of Holy Spirit Catholic Church helps with the spiritual formation of our youngest students through weekly religion classes at the preschool. Our preschool students also actively participate in two Masses each year: Thanksgiving and Lent. They are also involved with events surrounding the May Crowning. Throughout the school year, Lower School students receive instruction about Christ’s mission through individual class and Lower School Masses, monthly First Friday Adoration, separate student retreats for First Communicants and fourth, fifth

and sixth grade students, and a virtue-of-the-month program tailored to every grade level. Upper School spiritual formation comes in many ways and includes: a two-night retreat at the start of Freshman year, full-day retreats each semester for students in grades 7-11, a three night Senior Experience in the fall and a two night retreat in the spring, Lenten Weekend Retreats, Summer Mission Trips, Wednesday Fellowship Dinners, First Friday Adoration, a virtue of the month program, and sexuality and chastity workshops.

Many programs are also offered for the spiritual benefit of our parents and faculty. These include Marion Club, which encourages the school community to come together weekly to pray the Rosary, parent Bible studies, “Speak with Love” workshops for families, “Parent like a Champion” seminars for families participating in athletics, weekly spiritual e-mails to families, Father/Son and Mother/Daughter day retreats, and Bible studies for Moms, Dads, and Staff. The faculty is invited to attend spiritual talks that are planned throughout the year.

Bishop Fulton Sheen pointed out that Christ’s first public word was to a future Apostle, and it was “Come.” Before he ascended to Heaven, Christ spoke his last words to his Apostles, and He gave the imperative “Go.” In other words, Christ invited his disciples to Himself before He sent them into the world as His witnesses. Holy Spirit Prep’s Faith Community, our retreats, our Masses, our Eucharist Adorations and other spiritual activities invite students, families and staff to Christ. One cannot give what he himself does not possess. Prayer and sacraments nourish the soul with grace, the life of Christ, and the necessary help for apostolate work. After coming to Christ, we then go into the world equipped to witness and give Christ to the community – serving as He came to serve – both the school and society.

FATHER PAUL’S PRAYERWe praise you oh most loving Heavenly Father for all the many blessings of this summer: the beautiful weather, the safe travels of our families and the good health of all our people. We ask you to continue remembering all of us, your children at Holy Spirit Prep as our year begins. We look forward to seeing familiar faces and to meeting our new community members. You have blessed our school in so many ways in the past and we thank you. Let our

thanks be manifest in the love and respect that we show for each other. Help us rejoice with each other in our successes. Console each other in our trials. Support each other in all the challenges we will face. And be quick to forgive each other when we have been offended.

We ask all this in the Name of Jesus Christ, your only Son, Our Lord, Amen.

The Annual Fund bridges the gap between the cost of operating our school and the amount of income tuition provides. Tuition covers about 85% of the cost of running and maintaining our school and keeping in place the superior faculty. This year the Annual Fund has multiple goals: reaching $500,000 in revenue, participation by every family and a group committed to pray for Catholic Education and the success of the Annual Fund at Holy Spirit Prep. Last year with the generous support of our families the Annual Fund exceeded its goal raising over $300,000. We hope you will be able to support us in reaching our goals.

For more information contact Scott Rawles, VP for Advancement and Strategic Planning at 678-904-2811 or [email protected].

Like to run? Or not… the Fund Run is our opportunity to gather as a school family to celebrate of the success of the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund bridges the gap between the cost of operating our school and amount of income tuition provides. The Fund Run is a wonderful way for you and your family to spend a Saturday morning together.

Last year we had over 700 participants and we are planning for 1,000 this year. The T-shirt is a secret and almost as big a deal as the one from the Peachtree… well maybe not that big, but still a secret.

So come out on October 3, 2009 whether for the run, to walk or cheer on your family and be sure to plan on staying for the Family Picnic. This year, registration is only available online at www.holyspiritprep.org/fundrun.asp.

I am privileged both as a parent of three children and as a member of the Holy Spirit Prep Community to serve as the Annual Fund Chair for the 2009-2010 school year. Thank you to Emmie House and Kelly Angelo who served so faithfully as co-chairs of last year’s highly successful Annual Fund Campaign. Emmie and Kelly, we are in your debt, literally!

The Annual Fund bridges the gap between the cost of operating our school and the amount of income tuition provides. Tuition covers approximately 85% of the cost of running and maintaining our school and keeping in place our dedicated faculty. This year the Annual Fund has multiple goals: reaching $500,000 in revenue, participation by every family at Holy Spirit Prep, and a group committed to pray for Catholic Education.

In the economic challenges of the last year, many in our community have come to understand personally, and even more acutely, what is demanded in order to sacrifice to ensure the growth and happiness

of those who mean the most to them. The work of educating a person -the whole person- requires a truly complete approach, one that endeavors to see children as God sees them: full of potential,

made in His image. This is a beautiful, but ambitious goal. However, it is one that we must strive towards every day. It is because we believe in that goal that we send our children to Holy Spirit Prep.

Please take some time in the next few weeks to read the book “The Holy See’s Teaching on Catholic Schools” (mailed to all families on July 24) and prayerfully consider how you can help Holy Spirit Prep this year.

May the Holy Spirit guide us in this process, and may we be energized and

called to support and sustain the critical mission of forming our children as God wills; to His greater glory.

Ann M. Moorhouse2009-2010 Annual Fund Chair

Cougar field update

In August of 2008 as a result of the efforts of many members of the Holy Spirit Prep family the City of Sandy Springs approved our concept to establish a new athletic and administrative campus on Lake Forrest Drive @ I-285. The implementation of our plans have been delayed by continuing legal action against the City claiming technical errors in the City’s process by

a few neighbors who are intent on blocking the new campus. The case is scheduled to be heard in the next few weeks. Once the case is resolved we will move ahead in seeking additional school community funding support for the development of the site. We have invested significantly in this effort and we feel certain we will prevail.

As a parent of a rising Kindergartener and a Pre-K3 student, I am extremely excited about the upcoming 2009–2010 school year! Being the Preschool Parent Volunteer Association Chair, I want to welcome all the parents to the Holy Spirit Prep Preschool and introduce to you all the amazing things our students will be participating in throughout the year. We, as parents, have a very unique personal investment in HSPS and the school depends on our help to make the events successful and FUN!

There are so many ways for parents to get involved and help make this year great for our children: Hospitality, Cultural Events, Spiritual Life, Family Fun Night, Fall Festival, Doughnuts with Dad and Muffins with Mom, Field Day, and Preppie Prom (Pre–K4) with the Preschool. We also have events with the entire Holy Spirit Prep Community like the Fund Run and Family Picnic, Mother–Son Hoedown, Family Advent Celebration, Father–Daughter Dance, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Spring Gala, and Movies on the Green.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with the families within the HSP Community. Through my involvement with the school, I have been fortunate to meet people that will be life-long friends. Please consider volunteering and making a difference in the lives of our children this year. We will have sign up sheets at Welcome Back Day and our Preschool Orientation Night. You may contact us at [email protected].

I look forward to seeing you at Welcome Back Day!

On any given weekday you

can walk into the Holy Spirit

Prep Preschool and notice a

certain energy and creativity

within its walls. Yes, 2 – 4

year olds do have a lot

of energy. However, our

teachers use large amounts

of creativity to create a fun,

yet focused, environment

for our preschoolers. Susan Ryan is one of these preschool

teachers who do a fabulous job creating a warm and loving

atmosphere in which to nurture our littlest students.

Susan Ryan, “Miss Susan”, is returning for her seventh

year at Holy Spirit Prep Preschool. Miss Susan is the Pre–K4

grade level coordinator. As a grade level coordinator, one

must possess strong leadership skills. Susan takes initiative,

relates well with

parents, and

understands the

children’s needs.

She coordinates

classroom units

with enrichment

studies and is a

resource to other

Pre–K4 teachers.

These traits are

ones that are mostly seen by other faculty and staff, yet what

most parents will notice immediately about Susan is that she

is lots of fun! Her classroom is always creatively decorated

to celebrate the current season and holiday. She is constantly

coming up with new ideas, new games and new ways to

teach. Her “happy go lucky” and child-friendly personality

shines through as she nurtures and teaches her students. Early

Childhood Principal Dara Liberatore, “Susan is an extremely

dedicated employee and an amazing team player.” As we

begin another year in the Preschool, we anticipate the new

creative and fun methods Miss Susan and all the teachers will

use to teach and enrich the “Preppies”.

As the summer months come to an end, the teachers at the preschool are gearing up for another exciting school year with many activities and events in the works. We will kick off the year with “Welcome Back Day” – a chance for our little ones to meet their teachers and new friends. It’s so endearing to see the Preppies come in feeling a bit insecure and then, within a few short weeks, see them walking the halls with pride. It won’t be long before they fall into the carpool routine, and instead of tears at drop off, we will watch them hop out of the car, screaming “goodbye” to their parents and trying to run into the school to greet their teachers and friends!

Preschool is all about nurturing relationships, and we try to provide many opportunities for families to socialize and foster friendships with each other. Preschoolers gravitate toward each other

and play at the monthly Fellowship Dinners and during Family Fun Night. Families come together to kick off the School’s Annual Fund celebrating with a Fun(d) Run and family picnic. At the Tot-trot, the preschoolers steal the show as they enthusiastically run the bases to win a medal. Parents always enjoy attending the Spring Art Show at the Lower School, during which we showcase the

artwork their children have meticulously worked on throughout the year. The children are so proud of the treasures and love to see their work on display.

The spiritual development of the children is of utmost importance and is incorporated into many, if not all, of the activities at the preschool. Children are able to see all that they learn in chapel come together during the Thanksgiving and Lenten Masses. The Christmas Concert is a beautiful way to pause and reflect on the true meaning of the Christmas season, and our Preppies are so excited when the Kindergarteners return to perform with them. In the spring, there is nothing more precious than the May Crowning when the children all pray the Hail Mary together and each one offers Mary his/her flower.

Parents are important to us at the preschool, and we try to find different ways to honor them. The children love it when we celebrate Muffins with Mom or Doughnuts with Dad. In addition, the Mother/Son Hoedown and the Father/Daughter Dance are two annual events which hold a special place in the hearts of many of our parents. Another day that all the children eagerly await is Field

Day – when the moms and dads assume control of the preschool for the day, planning fun games and activities for the children. We love to witness the bonding between parent and child on these days.

We love to celebrate, and holidays are particularly fun for us. In November the Pre-K4’s gather together and share a Thanksgiving Feast. St. Nicholas always leaves a treat for the children on his feast day, and the looks of joy on the Preppies faces when they find their surprise is priceless. There are also special occasions which call for dressing up, and the children look forward to these days with great anticipation. School-wide Spirit Days occur throughout the year, and everyone wears our school colors: green and gold. On Catholics of the Caribbean Day, the children are thrilled to don pirate attire. Of course the following month we have our annual Halloween parade. The kids love getting dressed up and showing off their costumes that we’ve heard about for weeks on end! Finally, on St. Patrick’s Day – well, everyone is Irish on March 17th – and green is most certainly the color of the day!

Our extracurricular activities supplement the learning that goes on in the classroom. Programs such as karate, cooking, soccer, Playball and FasTracKids provide the children with fun and exciting ways to explore the world around them. In addition, Holy Spirit Prep offers the Little Cougar Soccer program. It’s great to watch the 3’s and 4’s interact on the field while their parents offer guidance and support as coaches. More information about all of these programs will be forthcoming.

We have so much to look forward to in the coming school year and eagerly await the arrival of your children in just a few weeks.

A sense of anticipation fills the Lower School campus as we eagerly await our students’ return to school, along with the welcome arrival of our new students, who will be joining us from throughout the country and abroad.

Our anticipation has been heightened by the excitement for learning that will take place during the interdisciplinary days our talented enrichment teachers have planned for students. In September our students will have the opportunity to spend a few days sampling what life and learning were like during colonial times in America. In addition to our faculty providing lessons on early America in the classrooms, we will have our own “Williamsburg Village” on the lower school field, and we welcome any parent “pioneers” who would like to volunteer their time and talent to this wonderful experience for our students.

As we pause to appreciate the many God–given freedoms we enjoy living in the land of the red, white and blue, the color blue holds an additional significance for our school. Next month, the Secretary of the United States Department of Education will announce whether Holy Spirit Prep has been awarded the designation of a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The

efforts of the entire school community have contributed to our being one of the finalists.

The Colonial America unit will be the hallmark of what we anticipate will be another successful academic year. The Stanford testing results we received during the summer were the strongest ever for the Lower School, and the math program that was put in place last year contributed to those high scores. This year our students will further enhance their knowledge of the world and communities around them through a new social studies program that is rich in resources.

The Lower School joins the other campuses in fulfilling our apostolic mission to care for others and to protect the precious natural resources God has entrusted to us. What a privilege and an opportunity it is for us as a school community to follow Christ’s call to help those in need, and to protect our limited natural resources for our children and for the generations to come. The guidance and support needed to carry out these ministries as a community of faith are provided to us through class and Lower School Masses, retreats, our virtues program, and an upcoming campus-wide conservation effort.

It has been a busy summer preparing for the welcome arrival of our new and returning

students. An additional kindergarten class has been added to meet our increased enrollment needs, a new recess and soccer field is in place, and plans for a beautiful garden and fountain are being implemented. Our teachers have taken advantage of a variety of professional development opportunities this summer, and the new knowledge and skills they have gained will be implemented through additional rewarding learning activities for our students.

The school calendar is filled with occasions for us to come together in celebration of the many gifts the Holy Spirit has bestowed upon our community. In addition to our interdisciplinary unit, we look forward with anticipation to many special events such as the Angel Parade and Day in the Life of a Kindergartner, Family Clay Night, the Mother–Son Hoedown, Fall Festival, Grandparents Day, Family Advent Evening, Catholic Schools Week, the Father-Daughter Dance, Field Day, the Art Show, and our always creative and entertaining grade–level plays.

As you enjoy the time spent with your children during the final days of summer vacation, we wish everyone a school year filled with God’s blessings.

those of us who enjoyed the beautiful puppet centerpieces at our Spring Gala this year know first hand how spectacular these puppets were. these wonderful showpieces were done by the students under the direction of Lower School art teacher Susan Matakis.

Her work did not go unnoticed by the center for Puppetry arts and during this year’s art show they presented her with a special recognition award for her work. “this is a great honor,” replied Susan. “We enjoyed making the puppets and were not seeking any recognition, but it sure is nice to know that our work was noticed. i’m happy to accept the award on behalf of all the Holy Spirit Prep students who participated in making the puppets.” the award was presented by mr. alan Louis, Director of museum and educational Programs. mr. Louis stated, “Few elementary students are ever given the opportunity to build articulated marionettes like those created by the students of Holy Spirit Prep. your students’ puppets are very special objects to their creators and sure to become treasured family heirlooms in the future.” mr. Louis further congratulated Susan on introducing her students to the magic of puppetry and stated that her dedication and initiative are inspiring.

Way to go Susan! We can’t wait to see what will be created by our students this year.

WE WELCOME NEWCOMER Michael BrennanHoly Spirit Prep is proud to have highly qualified Catholic teachers on staff. This year we are excited to announce the addition of six new teachers to the Upper School faculty whose dedication to the quality of Catholic education is exemplary. All six come to us through the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) at the University of Notre Dame. ACE is a two year teaching and service fellowship that helps strengthen and sustain Catholic schools in underprivileged areas. The Master’s program offers intensive professional preparation to equip teachers with the skills and experience to become effective Catholic educators.

Mr. Michael Brennan is one of new teachers who will begin teaching here at Holy Spirit Prep this fall. He will be teaching both Pre-Algebra and Algebra classes. Mike received his Master of Education and his Administrative Leadership Degree through the Alliance for Catholic Education program at the University of Notre Dame. He has nine years experience teaching math, science and theology in Catholic middle and high schools. In addition to his classroom teaching experience, Mike has coached boys and girls sports for many years. We anticipate seeing Mr. Brennan not only in the classroom, but also working with students on our basketball and baseball teams. Mike comes to us from the Chicago area, but has lived in Louisiana for five years and is looking forward to southern hospitality and southern weather again. He hopes he will be accepted in Georgia even though he is a die-hard LSU fan. Welcome Michael Brennan and all of our new teachers to our Holy Spirit Prep Community!

HSP is pleased to report that 7th & 8th grade students

will see “CLS 010” on their 09–10 schedules. Latin has

joined the junior high curriculum! Students in Latin will

not only master the language’s grammar and vocabulary,

but will gain access to the wealth of ideas generated

by over 2500 years of people who thought in Latin.

Last year, Lyceum participants met ancient heroes and

learned the meanings of abbreviations such as “e.g.” This

year, students will compare their lifestyles to a Roman

family’s as they read the stories in their textbook, Ecce

Romani . They will create dialogues and poems, interpret

myths and epigrams, pray and sing, and find the footprints

of Latin in other languages. Outside the classroom, they

can compete with other schools in Certamen matches

and make their own togas on HSP’s Classics Day.

Two unique aspects of our junior high program are its

place alongside Spanish and its inclusion of Latin literature

from the Christian tradition. There is no doubt that our

junior high students will need discipline for the study of

two non-native languages. Classics has partnered with the

Spanish department to maximize the benefits of studying

two languages at once (three when you count English).

Students will directly compare vocabulary, grammar,

and culture, and track the ways that Latin developed

into Spanish. Many people find they understanding their

own language better when they come in contact with

another. Unlike many Latin programs, Holy Spirit Prep’s

consistently brings students into direct contact with their

Christian roots. In addition to Cicero, Caesar, and Cato,

we look to Aquinas, Jerome, and the Second Vatican

Council. Students learn prayers like the Agnus Dei and

the reasons they endure in liturgy and Catholic culture.

A last word about the upcoming year: because this

is the first year of junior high Latin, students in the

7th, 8th, and 9th grades are in the same Latin I course.

Given Holy Spirit Prep’s strong community, this is a

recipe for collaborative learning and academic success.

Kaitlyn Curtin, Latin Teacher

“Latin and Greek are not dead languages. They have merely ceased to be mortal.”

On behalf of the Administration, Staff and Faculty of the Upper School, I want to extend a warm welcome to all of our new and returning students. Looking ahead, we are very excited about the new programs we will be offering our school community this year. First of all, we will be introducing Holy Spirit Prep’s new apostolate, Faith Community Mission. We will be building and working on our Faith Community for students, faculty, and parents. Faculty will be involved in apostolates, retreats and mission work. Parents will have opportunities to participate in retreats, reflections, dinners and the Parent Like a Champion program. Students will have opportunities to be actively involved with student reflection evenings, a pro–life club, food drives for feeding the poor, and service to the Solidarity School students, to name a few. Holy Spirit Prep has always had an emphasis on service, but this year our Faith Community Mission will give our students more opportunities and projects to be of service to both school and community thereby showing how Christ is present in our every day lives.

As enthusiastic as we are about our faith development in the classroom, we are also very excited about these virtues crossing over into other programs. This year we are implementing a Notre Dame program called Play Like a Champion. This program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and compassion. It is an opportunity for students to learn to be their best in whatever they do and at the same time maintain their Christian entity in sports or play.

Another new program this year is the 7th and 8th grade Junior High Latin program. The goal of the program is to introduce the classics earlier in the students’ education so they can take upper level Latin and Greek classes in their Junior and Senior year. We are a classical Catholic School and by introducing Latin to our 7th and 8th grade students we

hope to instill in them love of classics at an early stage.

In addition to these new programs, the HSP Upper School is proud to announce the addition of six new teachers to our faculty. These quality teachers are graduates of the Alliance for Catholic Education from the University of Notre Dame. Please join me in welcoming; Barbara Sloan – Theology, Mike Brennan – Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Mike Rondeau – Physics, AP Physics, AP Biology, Calculus, Jim Falcetti – Latin, Brendan McKiernan – Geometry, Pre–Calculus, and Cliff Arnold – 8th and 10th grade English, Lyceum, to the Holy Spirit Prep Community.

The 2009–2010 school year will be an extremely exciting school year filled with new programs, and our traditional fun days at the Upper School. House Day, Classics Day, and Catholics of the Caribbean Day are a few of my favorites because these events allow students and teachers to share in making these days a real success. We all enjoy anytime we can come together, have fun and play. Our fun days balanced with our hard working academic days ensure our students have a perfect balance of their busy days.

All our activities are capped off with seeing our senior students graduate and be successfully accepted into the best colleges this wonderful country of ours has to offer. Our counseling office does terrific work in guiding our students from an early age to focus their talents and efforts to their lifetime goals and our Catholic ministry prepares them magnificently to take their place in society as Catholic leaders and defenders of our faith and values.

I hope all of you enjoy the rest of your summer and the faculty, staff and I look forward to seeing everyone in mid-August.

Holy Spirit Prep is very proud of the traditions that have been established within our athletic program. The upcoming 2009–2010 school year promises to be one of our best years yet in sports as we work to take these traditions to a higher level.

Our High School competes in Region 1AAA, which is the largest classification in GISA (Georgia Independent School Association). Our Junior High participates in MAAC (Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference). Participation in athletics or club teams is highly encouraged at HSP and we are anticipating another year with a greater than 95% participation rate among our upper school students. We are very excited to be implementing the Play Like a Champion program this year that will support the development of good character traits on and off the field. With this as our focus, we are anticipating keeping our tradition that all high school athletic teams place high enough in league play in order to compete in the Region 1AAA Tournament, and more than 80% of these teams will again advance to the GISA State Tournament.

Holy Spirit Prep has high hopes for our Junior High teams as well. We look forward to watching them excel during the year and participate in the MAAC Championships. The soccer teams will be expanding their competition this year. The Junior High boy’s soccer team will play an independent schedule in the spring with the larger Atlanta private schools. The Junior High girl’s soccer team will play in the MAAC league this spring, but will also compete against many of the

larger Atlanta private schools as well.

An exciting new addition to the sports program is the creation of Booster Clubs for each sport. These Clubs will be parent run and parent funded and allow for additional benefits for each

team. Parents will be expected to contribute a minimum of five hours helping with concessions, tickets and other team duties outlined by the coach.

A new pricing structure is in place for upper school sports for the 2009–2010 school year: $300 per high school sport or $900 per student paid the first week of school for unlimited

sports for a year; $200 per junior high sport or $600 per student paid the first week of school for unlimited sports for a year.

All fees, health forms, and parent consent forms must be turned in prior to the official start date for each sport. Complete details are available on the Holy Spirit Prep Athletics website, www.holyspiritprep.org/athletics.asp.

Coaches and athletes are looking forward to the implementation of the Play Like a Champion (PLC) program. This program, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education, focuses on making sports a positive experience for young people. One of the pillars of the PLC program is helping coaches embrace a philosophy of coaching as ministry. Athletic experiences are means of cultivating virtues and providing an opportunity for authentic community. The program

emphasizes that sports should be fun and enjoyable. The program is student-athlete centered. Every decision made must be in the best interest of the students. The program will help players, coaches and parents identify the objectives of playing sports and act with those objectives in mind.

The PLC program uses the GROW model: Goals, Relationships, Ownership, and Winning. Many people may be concerned that this program teaches the kids that winning is not important or that hard work and serious commitment are unnecessary. On the contrary, this program emphasizes the benefits of healthy competition and the striving for personal and communal improvement. HSP sports should help students

achieve their full potential as athletes and as Christians. Any person interested in coaching at HSP will be required to participate in a PLC training session. There will also be a presentation for all parents of students who will be participating in sports so they understand the program and what is expected of them. PLC was chosen because of its consistency with the mission and educational philosophy of Holy Spirit Prep. This program will be the centerpiece and foundation of the HSP athletic program Preschool through 12th grade beginning in the 2009/2010 school year.

According to the Oxford

English Dictionary — the

finest dictionary in the

English speaking world,

the word “fellow” was first

used in 1016 — giving the

Old English word a rather ancient pedigree. The

word “fellow” carries with it a number of possible

meanings. In college and universities we use the

term “fellow” to designate “a colleague sharing

in official dignity” or “a member of a collegiate

foundation.” In common use, a college “fellow”

can enjoy all the rights, privileges, responsibilities

(and yes, fellowship) of academic life.

So it is my great privilege to bestow upon Mr.

Martin Gatins the status as the first Holy

Spirit College Fellow. Martin was among the

initial founders of Holy Spirit Prep. Martin’s

friends and associates speak of him in the

fondest possible terms and credit his enthusiasm,

his vision, and his support as key ingredients in

the founding of this school.

So it is fitting and proper that today — a day

dedicated to celebrating academic achievement

and a new beginning (literally a commencement)

— that we begin a tradition of honoring

those who have made the dream of Catholic

education a reality. Holy Spirit College will

always find a place for friends and family. So

Mr. Gatins, as the first honorary fellow of Holy

Spirit College, you are always welcome to share

with us and our fellowship. If you ever want

to stimulate the mind, engage in questions of

philosophy, examine the treasury of the world’s

knowledge, read a perfect Shakespearean

sonnet, or discuss the architecture of St. Peter’s

— you have a home here at Holy Spirit. You are

always welcome to partake in what Cardinal

Newman called this “great, but ordinary means

to a great but ordinary end” — the beauty of

Catholic Education.
