    The principal objectives of the MCST are to improvethe quality of cultural life and the physical health of Koreas

    citizens and to play a role in developing the nation into

    a culturally advanced country of the 21st century. It will

    achieve these aims by preserving and passing on the

    traditional culture, as well as supporting its modernization,

    expanding the nations cultural and art domains, cultivating

    the cultural content industry, developing sustainable

    tourism resources and promoting tourism, cultivating the

    international tourism industry, and promoting elite sports as

    The Ministry of Culture, Sports and

    Tourism was initially launched in itsearly form on November 4th, 1948 bythe National Government Organization

    Act as the Bureau of PublicInformation, Cultural Affairs Bureauunder the Education Department,and the Tourism Contribution Bureauunder the jurisdiction of the Ministryof Transportation, as founded onOctober 2, 1961.

    The communications and cultural artdivisions were merged, and with thatthe Ministry of Culture and PublicInformation was born on July 24, 1968.

    This measure was reversed on January3, 1990 as the information division wasseparated, whereupon the Ministry ofCulture was born.

    Following the revision of the National

    Government Organization Act onMarch 6, 1993, the Ministry of Cultureand the Ministry of Youth and Sports

    were merged into the Ministry ofCulture and Sports. The Ministrytook over the Tourist Bureau fromthe Ministry of Transportation, and

    when the peoples government waslaunched on February 28, 1998, it wasreorganized as the Ministry of Cultureand Tourism, thereby becoming the

    core administrative body in charge ofculture and tourism-related policies.

    Further revision was adopted onFebruary 2008, merging the digitalcontent responsibilities once underthe management of the Ministry ofInformation and Communication, andthe Government Information Agencyspromotional activities became part ofthe newly-formed Ministry of Culture,

    Sports and Tourism.

    investigation to secure the futureof our museums. It also collectscultural relics for research andexhibition purposes. In addition,it is responsible for storing andmaintaining state-owned buriedand excavated relics, providingeducation on and promotingKoreas cultural heritage, andarranging exchanges withoverseas museums or related

    Art Institute members intheir creative endeavors,and art istic exchangesand events in Korea and

    THE NATIONALINSTITUTE OF THEKOREAN LANGUAGE(http://www.korean.go.kr)

    The institute was rst opened in1991 to pursue the developmentof the Korean Language andto research ways to improvelanguage use in daily life.

    To that end, it studies andresearches materials needed forestablishing language policies.

    It is also in charge of standardsfor spoken and written Korean,publishing Korean dictionariesto standardize the language, anddisseminate the rened use of thespoken language. It is dedicatedto saving Hangeuls heritage inan organized manner in order toestablish a foothold for furtherdevelopment, and to spreadit abroad to enhance Koreas

    international status.

    THE NATIONAL GUGAKCENTER(http: www.gugak.go.kr)Since 1950, the National GugakCenter has been maintaining andhanding down traditional dance,music, and song through researchand education, traditionalperformances, and overseasexchanges. It is also in charge ofthe National Center for KoreanFolk Performing Arts. The JindoNational Gugak Center and the

    Busan National Gugak Centerboth opened in 2004.

    THE GOVERNMENTBROADCASTINGSERVICE(http://www.ktv.go.kr)

    The facility was rst launchedas the movie division of theNational Promotion Bureau in1948, and began KTV, its owncable broadcasting station, in1995. At that time, it was the onlymedia outlet run by the Koreangovernment. Its schedule consistsof cultural art programs, publicinformation broadcasts, andgovernment policy broadcasts.Such programs were broadcastthrough cable, satellite, IPTV, andthe Internet. The facility is alsoresponsible for producing DaehanNews and other government-

    related videos, archiving, andproviding support for other publicfacilities requiring help with videopromotion.

    Founded in 1971, the facilityis responsible for the generalplanning of overseas culturepromotion; supporting overseascultural centers and culturalpromotion centers, organizingevents designed to introduceKorea, inviting foreign VIPsto Korea, making materials topromote Korea abroad, providingsupport for Korea-related articles

    in the overseas press, and otherforms of support for foreign

    journalists wishing wto visitKorea.

    THE NATIONAL FOLK MUSEUM OF KOREA(http://www.nfm.go.kr)Established in 1946, the museum is dedicated to researching traditionaldaily life, crafts, seasonal customs, religions, varieties of ceremonies,and traditional practices and policies, and conducting comparativeresearch with other cultures. It is also responsible for preserving anddistributing traditions, and purchasing, collecting, and maintainingfolklore. It is the museums job to transform cultural relics into culturalproducts, engage in exchanges with overseas museums, and runeducational programs. National Gugak Center both opened in 2004.
