Abstract

Photodynamic Therapy(PDT) for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising new modality for cancer treatment, which involves the combination of light of an appropriate wavelength and a photosensitizing agent, which is selectively taken up and retained by tumor cells. Separately, each of these factors is harmless; however when they are combined in the presence of oxygen, cytotoxic reactive oxygen species are produced, which leads to irreversible cellular damage and causes cell death and tumor destruction. PDT has been used for many years, but only now is becoming widely accepted and utilized, even though it has many advantages over other types of treatments. First, PDT avoids systemic treatment since treatment occurs only where light is delivered. Therefore it is not necessary for the patient to undergo systemic treatment when treating localized disease, therefore, side-effects are also avoided. Another advantage is that PDT is selective. The photosensitizing agent will selectively accumulate in cancer cells and the surrounding normal tissues are spared. PDT can also be used when surgery is not possible. If a patient has cancer in an organ or part of an organ that cannot be removed surgically (eg. the upper bronchi of the lung), PDT can still treat the site. Moreover, it is a low cost procedure. Finally, PDT is a repeatable therapy. Unlike radiation therapy, PDT can be used again and again. Hence, it offers a means of long-term management of cancer even if complete cure is not possible. In this presentation, the basic principles of PDT, as well as the fundamentals of the theory, methods, and instrumentation of clinical diagnosis and treatment of cancer will be introduced. It will also discuss non-oncological applications such as functional targeting of bacteria, and vector control of Malaria and treatment of Microbial Infections.

Biographical Sketch

Prof. Mahmoud H. Abdel-Kader Professor of Photochemistry, Cairo University President of the German University in CairoEmail: [email protected]

Prof. Abdel-Kader is a Professor of Photochemistry and currently, the President of the German University in Cairo, since 2002. Prof. Abdel-Kader received his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in Spectroscopy and Photochemistry at Stuttgart University, Germany in 1979. He got a post doctoral position at University of Karlsruhe, from 1982 to 1983. From 1983 to 1984, he was a Senior Researcher at the Federal Institute

of Technology, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland. He was a Visiting Professor at both Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA and the Institute for Laser Technology in Medicine and Metrology, Ulm University. He then served the position of Vice Dean of the National Institute of Laser-Enhanced Sciences (NILES), in Cairo University.

Prof. Abdel-Kader has supervised 82 master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. He has published over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals and in conference proceedings. Also, he is an inventor of 9 patents. He has given more than 80 invited talks and plenary lectures at both national and international meetings. Prof. Abdel-Kader’s research interests include: Utilization of Solar Energy in Photochemical Conversions for Malaria, Filaria and Dengue Fever Vector control, Parasites such as Schistosomiasis and Agricultural pests using environmentally friendly (natural extract) Photosensitizers and Application of Nanoparticles in Photodynamic Diagnosis and Therapy of Cancer. Prof. Abdel-Kader was elected as Officer, then Chair of the Committee of the European Society for Photobiology (ESP) activities outside Europe (1997–2001). He was awarded the distinguished State Prize in Chemistry, in Egypt, 1996 as well as the State Medal in Chemistry, 1998. Prof. Abdel-Kader was awarded the 2012 Excellence Award of Science from Cairo University. He was awarded the State Award Discretion in Advanced Technological Sciences, 2014. Recently, he was elected as a permanent member of the Scientific Institute of Egypt, 2015 (which is the most prestigious Scientific Institute in the region established in 1798).




MINIEMULSIONS & THEIR POLYEMER LATEX SYSTEMS -Invention, fundamental understanding and applications

Abstract

The concept behind of miniemulsion was conceived, and proven, at Lehigh University in 1972. Research was conducted at Lehigh and elsewhere over the past 45 years which resulted in developing not only a fundamental understanding of miniemulsion systems based on solid scientific data but also new applications of polymer colloids and latex systems. However, the term “miniemulsion” was coined only in 1981. Following the a period of almost 20 years with only few publications in the open literatures, the annual number of publications on miniemulsions has been increasing exponentially over the past two decades including 240 patents currently.Miniemulsions are relatively stable oil-in-water emulsions with average droplet diameters ranging from 50 to 500 nm. These are typically prepared using a mixture of a surfactant and a low-molecular weight, highly water-insoluble co-stabilizer (early on referred to as co-surfactant). The lack of water solubility of the co-stabilizer is responsible for retarding emulsion degradation due to the Ostwald ripening, and hence the longer shelf-life stability of the submicron droplets. The low molecular weight of the co-stabilizer is responsible for its swelling promoting capability due to favorable entropic interactions according to Flory-Huggins-Morton equation. The two most important features of miniemulsions that distinguish them from conventional emulsions are the ability to prepare stable submicron oil-in-water droplets and the high swelling capabilities of the droplets. Another important feature is that in miniemulsion polymerization, the submicron size monomer droplets are the main sites for particle nucleation and growth via free radical initiation using oil-soluble or water-soluble initiators. These unique features of miniemulsions have been exploited in making new types of polymer colloids (latexes) that were difficult and sometimes impossible to make by using conventional emulsification or emulsion polymerization processes. These include preparation of artificial latexes and hybrid latexes, high solids latexes, polymerization of hydrophobic monomers and macromonomers, controlled polymer microstructure and morphology, encapsulation of inorganic nano-particles and organic pigments and dyes, and controlled molecular weight via living free radical polymerization, (see graph below).A review of state-of-the-art of miniemulsion over the past 45 years will be given emphasizing the fundamentals, recent developments and applications.

Biographical Sketch

Mohamed El-Aasser, professor of chemical engineering at Lehigh University. He served the University as vice president for international affairs (2009-2015) provost and vice president for academic affairs (2004-2009), dean of the P.C. Rossin College of engineering and applied science (2001 – 2004), chairman of chemical engineering department (1996 – 2001), co-director of the emulsion polymers Institute (1978 – 1989) director of the emulsion polymers institute (1989 – 2009), director of the enter of polymer science and engineering, director of the NSF polymer interfaces center (1991 -1996).

He earned BS and MS degrees from Alexandria University, Egypt and PhD from McGill University, Canada. He is internationally known for his research on polymer colloids: emulsion polymerization processes & latex technology, latex particle morphology, latex film formation, surfactants and colloidal stability. He and his students pioneered the field of miniemulsions. Authored more than 400 scientific articles, edited 5 books and holds 9 U.S patents. Advised 65 PhD students and Co-advised 32 PhD students, 53 MS students and 31 postdoctoral fellows. Delivered numerous lectures at national international conferences. El-Aasser received a bachelor’s and a master’s degrees from Alexandria University, Egypt, and a Ph.D. from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He has received numerous awards, including the 2007 Fellow of the American Chemical Society’s Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering, Lehigh University’s 1999 Hillman Extraordinary Service Award, the 1985 NASA Inventor of the Year Award (shared), the 2002 Roy W. Tess Award in Coatings and the 2007 Fellow of Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering; both of the American Chemical Society. January 17, 2017

Abstract

Cenozoic rivers of northeast Africa: Evidence of trans-Saharan drainage

ABSTRACT: Radar imagery of the Sahara of Egypt and eastern Libya has dramatically changed previous concepts in regard to long term aridity of this region, revealing an extensive network of buried fluvial channels documenting the river systems that developed in the proto-Sahara during the Late Paleogene and Neogene, following the early Eocene regression of the Mediterranean Sea, and prior to Pleistocene aridification. The fall in base level associated with the end-Miocene Messinian desiccation of the Mediterranean led to deep down-cutting and extension of river systems throughout much of North Africa and South Europe. The deep, infilled canyons beneath the modern Rhone and Nile are well known, but the radar imagery identifies other deep canyons under the North African Sahara that are now invisible. In eastern Libya, drainage from Serir Tebisti (Tebisti Massif) into the Mediterranean via the Sirt Basin was channeled by two main rivers, the Sahabi in the west and the Kufra in the east; these were subsequently united in the Early Pliocene when the latter captured the former. The Gilf River was another important channel that drained north from the Uweinat Gilf highland in southwest Egypt, in a system that may have been connected with the Kufra during the Neogene and enabling fish to move from the presently isolated Chad Basin to northern Libya and Egypt. The interplay of these north-flowing rivers and the constant northward retreat of the Mediterranean shoreline from Oligocene onward resulted in deposits of fluvial and marine sedimentation in every possible combinaton that have been described by many authors in the region between the Tebisti and the present Mediterranean shoreline. Prior to the establishment of the Nile, a southwestward drainage, the Qena River, was initiated by Oligocene uplift and lateral faulting along the Red Sea shoulder of the East African Rift. This river discharged into a distributive network known as the Radar Rivers near latitude 23Â°30\ N in the Southwestern Desert. It has been suggested that waters from the Qena River continued to flow southwestward to the Atlantic Ocean, in what is known as Trans African Drainage System (TADS).

Wadi Gabgaba is a dry river now, once running into NE Sudan for 250 km. and continued in SE Egypt for another 150 km. before of joining Wadi Allaqi. The old Allaqi River continued WNW to reach the Old Qena R. at Kalbsha 80 km. South Aswan. The old Gabgaba R. could have easily usurpt the function of the R. Nile, but the outbrost of the Bayuda volcanic in the Late Neogene forced the Nile to pass south and north away from the volcanics building the Dongola loop with 5

cataracts. The Gabgaba when it was active built 30000 square km inland delta in NE Sudan and 12000 square km. land delta SE Egypt. The Gabgaba can easily rejuvenated and when the Atbara water reaches the now dead defunct river.

Biographical Sketch

Professor Mohamed El-Bahay Issawi was born in August 23rd. 1934 in Tanta (the capital of Gharbia Governorate in the Nile Delta). He married in October 1964 and the family grewby adding two sons in 1966 and in 1968. He graduated in 1955 from Cairo University with a BSc in Geology. He earned his MSc. and PhD. in Geology from the same university in 1964 and 1968, respectively. After graduation, he joined the Geological Survey of Egypt as a field geologist where he was involved in several mapping projects and was active in sedimentary, stratigraphy, Quaternary and structural geology. He discovered with his team the Abu Tartur phosphate deposits, west of Kharga Oasis in 1961, the new iron ore deposits in Bahariya Oasis area in 1963 and the Kalabsha kaolin deposits, southwest of Aswan, in 1968. Prof. Issawi extended his work to Libya where he headed a mapping project there between 1974 and 1977. From 1969 to 1971 Prof. Issawi was a research fellow in Oslo, Norway and from 1971 to 1972 was a visiting professor specializing in Middle East geology at South Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He also served as adjunct professor in several Egyptian universities (e.g. Ain Shams, Menoufia, Aswan and Benha). Subsequently, Prof. Issawi becamethe head of the Regional Geology Department and afterwards the Director General of the Geological Survey of Egypt between 1982 and 1984. He was Under Secretary of State for Mineral Wealth between 1985 and 1996. Prof. Issawi has served his science and his nation over his long and outstanding career. He was a Member of Board of Trustees of the Geological Survey of Egypt, Nuclear Material Corporation and the Supreme Council of Antiquities. He was also a member of the Permanent Committee of Pharaonic and Prehistoric Antiquities where he was consulted for many salvage projects in antiquities (e.g. Abu Simbel temples before being removed and after their reinstallation; Nefertari tomb with the Paul Getty Foundation; the rising water in Abydos temple, protection of the Sphinx against underground water and choosing suitable rocks to cover the body of the statue). He has also been a consultant with the Commission Des Communauties Europeennees between 1990 and 1995, and with the Egyptian Military Forces between 1990 and 1997. Prof. Issawi has been a member of many national and international associations (e.g. Geological Society of Egypt since 1955; Vice President of Geological Society of Africa, 1978e1986; and International Union of Geological Sciences, 1985-1989). Prof. Issawi has been the chief editor of the Annals of the Geological Survey of Egypt, 1978-1983; a member of the editorial board of SIENT e Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 1979-1982; the Journal of African Earth Sciences, Pergamon Press, Paris, France, 1981e1983; EPISODES, I.U.G.S. Jour., Ottawa, Canada, 1985-1989; SAHARA, and Milan, Italy, 1989-2007.
