Technology has transformed the way students learn,
complete homework, search for and apply for jobs
and connect with teachers and classmates. Yet,
of U.S. households
are without a
computer at home,
21%according to the Census Bureau. Disproportionately
from low-income and minority communities, these
populations remain isolated from our digital society.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO
STUDENTS IN MINNESOTA.
Providing access to computers is not just about placing
a computer in a classroom and walking away, hoping
for the best. It is about providing the knowledge and
tools necessary to help those who have been left
behind get ahead. To give them the confidence to
succeed. And we are able to do this because of you.
Because of your support in 2013, we have been able
to provide access, teach skills and build the next
generation of leaders more so and in more ways
than we ever have before. But amid the great triumphs
of the previous year, we look toward the daunting
challenges of the next.
So we invite you to help us conquer once again. To help
us break through. To push us further than we have ever
been. We invite you to take the next step and join our
crusade to close the digital divide in Minnesota.
Sincerely,
Eric Vercauteren,
Board Chair
Tamara Gillard,
Executive Director

PREPARING FOR
COLLEGE WITHYOUR HELP.
For many students, the idea of college is out of reach.
The YMCA Multicultural Achievers program changes that
with its college and career-readiness program. And we make
sure students have the technology they need to succeed.
Jerriah has decided to take steps
to prepare for college and YOU
helped set her up for success
with a laptop to allow her to
complete schoolwork, enrollin classes and apply for jobs.
THANK YOU! THANK
YOU for the laptop that
was provided to me. I
will use this throughout
my high school career
and into my future.
Without having this
laptop I was limited,
but now that barrier
is removed.

2013 BY THE NUMBERS
In afternoons past, he would be taking a bus to the library
to write a paper within the one-hour time limit on the public
computers. Or, he would give up before he started because
it was just too hard to complete his homework without a
computer. Today, he excels in school and is preparing for his
future because of your support.
Your gifts have made an extraordinary impact. Here is a
snapshot of the heights you helped us achieve in the past year.

IGNITING PASSION ANDBUILDING CONFIDENCE,ALL THANKS TO YOU.
Picture Houa Wa Yang, a 10thgrade student in St. Paul
who goes to school every day and wants to complete his
school work, but comes up against a major barrier. Without
a computer at home, writing papers, conducting research
and turning in homework is a serious challenge.
This is my first time receiving such
a rewarding, beneficial item from
studying and learning new things.
This has shown me a path toward my
career goal in the future and proves
that I am eligible for a career in the
computer field or IT field.
Houa Wa Yang enrolled in the computer refurbishing and recycling
class that we offer at his school and earned his very own laptop when
he completed his Internet and Core Computing Certification.
Today, he has a computer to help him excel in school. More than that,
he has discovered a passion for computer technology and plans to
work toward a career in the field of information technology.

Three years ago, Htoo Paw, a refugee from
Thailand, moved to the United States to start a
new life and came up against multiple barriers.
Not only did he not speak English, but the high
school diploma he earned in Thailand was not
recognized in the United States.
But that didnt slow him down.
Htoo Paw enrolled in school at Guadalupe
Alternative Program School where he learned
English and earned his diploma. He also
participated in our workforce development
program where he learned digital literacy,
computer recycling and refurbishing andsoft skills such as resume writing, time
management and interviewing skills.
Today, Htoo Paw is using those skills as a
fulltime employee at Asset Value Recovery,
an IT asset disposition company.
