ForeworD

We are pleased to bring you the 2009-2010 edition of the Chicano Latino Affairs Council’s Minnesota Latino Directory.

Since the 2007-2008 publication, CLAC has identified many new agencies, businesses and non-profits that have opened their door to the Latino com-munity. This directory is a great tool to reach the Latino community and is an example of the commitment that the Latino and the general community has to the social, economic, and political development of Minnesota.

It is our intention that this directory will assist you in accessing this network of support in an effective manner. In addition you will find this directory helpful in clarifying the services provided by various agencies, which will facilitate referrals and coordination between resources at the local, state and national levels.

This year’s directory exhibits several significant changes from past direc-tories. In consolidating resources, the present directory is made available only in the English language; through we have made every effort to ensure that the organizations listed within have Spanish speaking resources.

A second change from past directories includes a new categorical Table of Contents. While the directory itself is organized alphabetically, the index has been organized by theme (Arts, Economic Development, Health, etc.). While many of the agencies listed are based in the Twin Cities Metro Area, we have noted agencies in greater Minnesota in the Table of Contents by placing the location in parentheses next to their name.

CLAC appreciates the cooperation and collaboration of the individuals and agencies who agreed to be listed in this directory. We hope that this Minnesota Latino Directory will be useful and informative. We look for-ward to the new era for Minnesota’s Latino community thanks to a grow-ing network of leaders, agencies and community resources.

Latino Policy Issues in MinnesotaThe council serves as a catalyst for critical thinking and policy-making on several issues that socio-economically impact Latinos. CLAC’s objective is to help empower Latinos through transforming public policy and propel the community to become strong, visible, and self-sufficient Minnesotanos. The following are focus areas that the council continues to work in:

Education Focus on the academic achievement of Latinos in public schools and address issues in school enrollment, retention, graduating, as well as early childhood education and higher education.

Immigration Support the need for immigration reform that addresses the economic and social welfare of the state’s immigrant communities and respects the value of equality and human rights.

Economic Development Educate state policy-makers of the increase in economic and business development and the contributions Latinos make to Minnesota’s economic strength and prosperity.

Housing Promote the need for more bilingual and culturally competent homebuyer programs. Educate the state on the barriers faced by Latinos when applying for housing or homeownership.

Health Advocate for affordable health care and access, culturally competent /bilingual practitioners, and preventive care programs.
