MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Fried Mashed Potatoes? 9 things about the 2015 Red Wings Rochester Democrat & Chronicle – 4/10/15

At age 34 and embarking on his 14th season in professional baseball, Doug Bernier has played in his share of opening days on the diamond.

And yet, he's just as eager to hear the cry of "Play ball" on Saturday as he was back in 2002. Or even when he was in college at Oral Roberts University.

"There were times in college I would skip class just to watch games on opening day," Bernier said. "There's just that buzz and excitement and everyone has it.

"It's kind of a sign that some warm weather's coming, and a reminder that some baseball's coming and you can get outside again."

After the winter endured by Rochesterians, has there ever been a more welcomed home opener for the Rochester Red Wings?

From foot after foot of snow, to nightly sub-zero forecasts, to confronting a month of nose-numbing wind chill, there's finally green grass at Frontier Field again and the boys of summer are back at it.

They'll be swinging those white ash bats, turning artistic double plays and zipping fastballs across the outside corner.

Play ball indeed.

Here's a quick look at the upcoming season, in inning-by-inning fashion:

1

Everyone's got a shot

Who's good? Who's not? Who knows. That's the charm of baseball in April.

"All the numbers start at zero," outfielder Eric Farris said. "As baseball players, we fail so often and struggle so much (remember, if you fail to get a hit in 13 of every 20 at-bats, you're still considered a premier hitter).

"You're not in a slump, you're not hot, you just get a fresh start."

2

Fresh air and sunshine (hopefully)

Baseball in Rochester is about a day, or night, at the yard. In the sun or under the stars.

The Wings are home for 72 games. The longest homestand runs 10 days and includes 11 games, from May 11-20 with a morning/night doubleheader against the Durham Bulls on May 19.

They're also home 14 times in a 20-day stretch in July (starting on the 4th) and have 18 home games in June.

The longest road trips: 11 games, and they'll do it twice (April 13-23 and Aug. 3-13).

3

If it's not 50 Saturday ...

Since winter seemed as though it would never end — it has ended, right? Right? — the Wings concocted an opening-day guarantee.

If the thermometer on the right-field scoreboard doesn't hit 50 at some point during Saturday's game, fans in attendance can redeem their ticket stub for a free ticket to any home game in April or May.

The forecast: Somewhere right around 50. Admit it, fans, you're hoping for a high of 49.

4

The ticket rundown

There are three price ranges for game-day tickets: $13 for lower-level premium seats, $11.50 for upper box and $9 for reserved. There's a $1 discount per seat if you buy in advance.

5

A potpourri of potables and protein

The Frontier Field food choices are far from boring. Zweigles red and white hots are a ballpark staple but so is the Red Osier roast beef.

New to menu: fried mashed potatoes ($4.75). Will they please your dietitian? No. Will they please your appetite? You bet.

For the night you decide healthy makes more sense, the Altobelli Deli has added a veggie wrap to the menu ($7).

A craft beer stand has been added in the concourse on the third-base side, next to the Homeplate food stand and across from the Beer Pen. The selection will vary throughout the season.

6

Look, up in the sky, it's ... fireworks

We love our mid-air pyrotechnics and the Red Wings have 18 fireworks shows, set to musical themes, on the schedule for every Friday and Saturday in June, July and August, plus May 15-16 as well as the final regular-season home game on Sept. 2.

7

From bat-men to Batman

The promotional schedule again calls for Batman Night. The tribute to the old TV show will be June 27 and will include the Batmobile as well as a visit by Catwoman (Julie Newmar).

Pro wrestling legend Bret "the Hitman" Hart will sign autographs on June 8 and baseball Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers visits on July 22.

A complete list of promotions can be found at redwingsbaseball.com.

8

Truly fresh air

Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the gates Frontier Field. This includes e-cigarettes.

A designated smoking area is located outside the gate near the Walk of Fame along Morrie Silver Way.

No food, beverages, coolers or lawn chairs may be brought into the stadium.

9

Oh, and there's baseball

Pitching prospects Alex Meyer and Trevor May, plus outfielders Aaron Hicks and Eddie Rosario are among the future Minnesota Twins that start the season with the Red Wings.

But long before the summer ends, two of the most promising prospects in the 13-year history of the Twins-Red Wings affiliation — outfielder Byron Buxton and third baseman Miguel Sano — should be putting on a show at Frontier Field.

MLB.com ranks Buxton the game's best prospect. Sano is No. 11 on that list.

Thus, the excitement of opening day won't end with Saturday's final out.

Polanco grand slam keys Lookouts win Chattanooga Times Free Press – 4/11/15

Jorge Polanco's grand slam to right field in the fifth inning broke open a scoreless Southern League baseball game Friday night in Montgomery, Ala., and propelled Chattanooga to its first win as a new Twins affiliate, 6-2.

The Lookouts (1-1) loaded the bases in the fifth when Mike Gonzales singled to open the inning, Levi Michael was hit by a pitch with two outs and Byron Buxton reached on a fielding error.

Polanco was 3-for-5 and Dalton Hicks was 3-for-4 with a ninth-inning RBI double.

Jose Berrios became the second Chattanooga starting pitcher in as many nights with at least 10 strikeouts, with the touted Berrios collecting 11 in 6 1/3 innings.

Game three of the five-game series is tonight at 8:05 EDT. Greg Peavey is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Lookouts, with Jared Mortensen scheduled for the Biscuits.

Goodrum homers, Slegers deals in 3-0 home opening victory Fort Myers Miracle – 4/10/15

Niko Goodrum blasted a two-run home run and starter Aaron Slegers provided a stellar outing as the Fort Myers Miracle blanked the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 3-0, in the home opener at Hammond Stadium in front of a team record 9,209 fans in attendance. Slegers (1-0) was perfect through the first 10 hitters of the game before allowing a one-out single to Kean Wong in the fourth inning. With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third, Tanner Vavra reached base for the Miracle on a third strike wild pitch from Charlotte starter Ryne Stanek. After Engelb Vielma grounded out to second base, Goodrum stepped into the box. After working the count to 2-0, Goodrum blasted a Stanek (0-1) fastball deep into the right field boardwalk to break the 0-0 deadlock and give the Miracle a 2-0 lead. Continuing his strong work with a lead, Slegers exited the game after six innings and allowed just two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Stanek lasted five innings and was charged with two runs on five hits with one walk and six punch outs. Miracle relievers Alex Muren and Brian Gilbert each were credited with holds after tossing scoreless seventh and eighth innings respectively. In the bottom of the eighth, the Miracle tacked on an insurance run. Like Vavra in the third, Vavra reached on a third strike wild pitch and stole second base with Goodrum at the plate. Charlotte reliever Buddy Borden then fanned Goodrum. Alex Swim stepped up and yanked a high bouncer through the right side. Playing in a shift, Stone Crabs second baseman Kean Wong attempted a sliding block, but the ball bounced off his glove and into center field. Vielma raced around third and scored, 3-0. For the ninth, manager Jeff Smith called on reliever J.T. Chargois for the final three outs. The hard-throwing right-hander pitched a perfect final frame with two strikeouts to record his first save of the season. The Miracle have now won the home opener in three consecutive seasons. Fort Myers is now 15-9 in 24 home openers. The attendance record bested the previous mark from July 3, 1996 of 8,969. The Miracle (1-1) return to Hammond Stadium tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. for the third of a four game series with the Stone Crabs (1-1). The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a giant replica of the 2014 Miracle championship ring. To order tickets, call (239) 768-4210 or order online at www.miraclebaseball.com. The Cougars lead didn't hold for the long as the Kernels added a pair of runs in the top of the second, taking a 4-3 lead. Jonatan Hinojosa led off the second with a walk and advanced to second on a Brian Navarreto single to left. Two batters later, Nick Gordon delivered the game tying run on a one-out, RBI single to center, scoring Hinojosa from third. Larson gave the Kernels their second lead of the night with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Navarreto.

The Kernels added another run in the top of the third, taking a 5-3. Fernandez led off the third with a single to left. T.J. White followed with a double down the left field line, moving Fernandez to third. A two-out, wild pitch brought Fernandez home to score, giving Cedar Rapids their second two-run lead of the night.

The Cougars cut the Kernels lead to one on an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Marty Herum gave Kane County their first baserunner of the frame with a one-out, infield single, advancing to second base on a Cedar Rapids throwing error. Herum came around to score two hitters later on the team's second error of the inning, cutting the Cedar Rapids lead to 5-4.

Cedar Rapids regained their two-run lead in the top of the sixth, going on top, 6-4. A two-out RBI single off the bat of Gordon brought around English from second.

Irby recorded his first save of the season with a scoreless bottom of the ninth. The right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out three of the four batters he faced.

Twins’ Gordon off to hot start for Kernels MiLB.com – 4/10/15

Nick Gordon will have plenty to talk about when he calls a certain Hall of Famer later this week.

The Twins shortstop prospect, mentored by Barry Larkin during the offseason, turned in his second straight multi-hit effort on Friday night, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored in Class A Cedar Rapids' 6-4 win at Kane County.

"It feels good to win, to be able to do it for my teammates. They help me as well," said Gordon, deflecting credit to his new squad. "They work the pitchers and help me see more pitches and we help each other pick up pitches, so I thank my teammates for the success right now."

Gordon, the Twins' fifth-ranked prospect, singled and scored in the first inning, lined another base hit in the second to plate Jonatan Hinojosa and added a third single in the sixth, knocking home Tanner English to give the Kernels a two-run edge. The 19-year-old shortstop, the fifth overall pick in last year's Draft of Olympia High School in Florida, made his Class A debut on Thursday when he went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in a 7-2 season-opening win.

"I'm just staying within myself, seeing pitches to hit, recognizing pitches," he said. "I'm not trying to do too much, just put it in play hard and, hopefully, it'll land."

Gordon, the brother of Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon and the son of former Major League reliever Tom Gordon, debuted last season with Rookie-level Elizabethton, where he hit .294 with a homer, 28 RBIs, 11 stolen bases and a .333 on-base percentage in 57 Appalachian League games.

Gordon spent some time this winter with Larkin, a first-ballot Hall of Fame shortstop who was a 12-time All-Star and won a World Series and three Gold Gloves over 19 seasons with the Reds. Larkin should be happy with Gordon's hot start in the Midwest League.

"I talk to Barry about once a week. I call and let him know how things are going, ask him about stuff to talk about," Gordon said. "He helps me all the time if I have questions, and my dad as well. Working with Barry, he helped me to improve my game."

Page 12: Minnesota Twins Minor League Report Saturday, …losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com › documents › 2 › 1 › 8 › 117608218 › ...Minnesota Twins Minor League Report Saturday, April

12

Gordon, who said his goal coming out of Spring Training is to stay healthy and support his teammates, has adjusted seamlessly to Class A pitching after facing less-polished and more erratic Rookie-level hurlers last summer.

"The pitchers throw more strikes, they challenge you more, they have an idea of where the ball is going, so you don't have to go up there being anxious," he said. "You can go up there knowing they're going to throw you a pitch you can hit, and you've got to capitalize on it."

Jorge Fernandez matched Gordon with three hits, while Kernels right fielder Zack Larson doubled and knocked in two runs. Starter John Curtiss (1-0) struck out seven and allowed four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings for his first win. C.J. Irby struck out the side in the ninth for his first save.

Kane County starter Jared Miller (0-1) was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and two walks, striking out three in three innings. Catcher Stryker Trahan, the D-backs' No. 16 prospect, hit a three-run homer in the first.
